    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Brenda Blake To: Tonya Luckey Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 3:49 PM Subject: Fwd: Fw: [PAFAY] Bryner - Alfred & family I dont' know too much about the Provance side of the family, but I have an Uncle Jim that lives in Dunbar. He maybe would know more. His number is in the book. The name is James Nathanial Provance. He's pretty old and not in real good health, so if she wants to call, she should do it soon. Also, he doesn't hear too well, so usually his caretaker (Kenny) sits with him and repeats the conversation for him. His father was Blaine Provance and Blaine's mother was Phoebe Bryner. There seems to be some disagreement within the family on whether Phoebe ever married the real father of Blaine or not. It is rumored that Blaine's real father was actually named Cole, but Phoebe married a Provance and gave him that name. That's about all I know. 3. Let's add a bit to this deal. The following statement may not be true but this is what was stated in Fischer's work. Located near Everson, Fayette County, PA has been disbanded due to no one to care for it. Is all overgrown and very difficult to find and the stones are almost illegible. There are many field stones. It is known as a Quaker Cemetery. Copied by D.R.Fischer and her husband Frank C. in the spring of 1974. Is in a wooded section. Bullskin Twp. The Providence Meeting House Cemetery is in Perry Twp. Sandy Hill Union Cemetery (Quaker) is in Menallen Twp. email: ellen@b-n-s.com Visit my web site: http://www.geocities.com/ellenj3

    3. Hi Jane & Ken, Now you've got me in on this for better or for worse. I went down & got the Fischer Book. Please keep in mind that Della never said these were complete listings. She gathered some by doing them herself & some were given to her over the years by others in order to type up & print. Her primary interest was not in Fayette County cemeteries. At some point I will have all these listed on our Elizabeth Twp. His. Soc. website but not for a while. I do plan to expand that site next year to include a lot more information. I'm going to take up 2 cemeteries here because of the remarks in the discussion. First we have what she called "Redstone Regular Baptist It only consists of 2 pages & is supposed to be in Redstone Twp. The following most likely is what came from Ellis. Redstone Baptist Church built in 1846 but meetings were held before that date. Members attended the Brownsville Church prior to this, Wm. Sharpless, Wm. Calvin, and Elias Hutchinson served as building committee, but Wm. Sharpless was chiefly responsible through his individual efforts and means. The church secured it for their use after it stood vacant for a number of years. Surnames mentioned are: Allton, Barns, Bee, Britt, Cadd, Cannon, Carlile, Cochburn, Colley, Colvin, Craft, Foster, Foulke, Gray, Hess, Higbee, Hughland, Hutchinson, Lancaster, Leonard, Lynn, Mason, Nines, McKee, Philip, Phillips, Rush, Seese, Sharpless, Shriver, Wagoner, Wells. J & M., David W Colvin d. 9/11/1845 age 7 Mary Ann Britt D. 6/4/1852 w/o John age 53 In Della's list I find all three listed. However, I also find: Sharpless, William d 11-22-1881 ag 84-9-17 Mary w/o Wm. b. 1-3-1802 d 3-13-1871 Now let's take up Smock Old Baptist Church Cemetery that she has listed as being in Jefferson Twp., Located at Smock, PA Surnames mentioned are: Abraham, Allen, Arison, Arthur, Blemey, Boden, Bowley, Bowman, Brown, Brownfield, Campbell, Carlson, Collett, Conell, Cooke, Cope, Cowell, Crabel, Crozier, Downs, Dunn, Fitz, Frales, Frasher, Frazier, Frey, Hagerty, Hazen, Hess, Hill, Jobes, Johnston, Jordan, Manford, Martin, McCloy, McCoy, McVey, Merkel, Nickel, Morris, Moxley, Oldham, Oring, Orins, Patterson, Phillips, Piersol, Poole, Richmond, Rittenhouse, Rossel, Shank, Stephens, Stor, Storer, Swain, Todd, Wells, Wetsel, Wetzel, Whetsell, Whitsell, Wilson, Winnett, Wintermath, Wintermutt. I've been puzzled, too. This area is not my main area of research yet I do have some ancestors in Redstone Baptist, Franklin Twp. I've been puzzled in the past by Yanik's and Yaniga's listing of what they called "Reg. 3. I just looked at my notes from Ellis and the 1872 maps for Centre District in Redstone Twp and Lafayette District in Franklin Twp and have some more confusion to add. There is a "Redstone Baptist Church" in Lafayette District of Franklin Twp. Down at the river the 1872 map lists "S. Smock" and a saw and grist mill. From the map Ken sent me, it looks like the town of Smock in Franklin Twp. is where the "S. Smock" is located in the 1872 map. So these two graveyards, one the Centre Monthly Meeting graveyard and the other the Redstone Baptist Church graveyard are not too far apart but on opposite sides of Redstone Creek. The Colvins, Sharplesses and others could have attended in Lafayette District as Peter Miller of Jefferson Twp. came across the Redstone Creek to attend in the Centre MM in Centre Twp. I think (but don' t know for sure) this Redstone Baptist Church is the "Big Redstone Baptist Church" in Franklin Twp. mentioned in Ellis. See Ellis page 559. "The church at Big Redstone, called Philadelphia, was constitued May 1, 1791, by Rev. David Loofborrow." .... Henry Frazer, minister and pastor of the Philadelphia Church; William Rittenhouse, Deacon and recorder.... " Ellis goes on to list members including the sister and brother in law of Peter Miller, Andrew Yeagley and Sarah (Miller-Davis-)Yeagley. This may account for the "meeting before 1847 question. So my hypothesis is there are indeed two cemeteries. Ken has surveyed the Centre Monthly Meeting Quaker cemetery which is actually in Redstone Twp and Della's book lists the Redstone Baptist Church in Franklin Twp. This would account for no stones being common in the two lists. Mike Miller On Wednesday 14 January 2004 17:20, Ken O'Neal wrote: > John > I'm thinking that there might be two cemeteries in that area . I looked at > names you sent. 3. Okay Listers, You just got a message that was supposed to go to Ken PRIVATELY. I had one personal e-mail from him to reply to & also needed to refer to one that was on line. Got mixed up on them & so my supposedly private one went to "The World". We all know this happens because WE who are on several sites have them set to go back to just the people who write in & if we want the message to go to the list, then we add it. Not so on PAFAYETT-L (per choice of the listmaster) so you'll all just have to Deal With It now & then. Now you all know I have that book & I don't have time to do all those lookups right now, so if you ask, don't be surprised if I can't answer you, not that I don't want to. I just don't have 150 hrs. in 1 day. Glad I didn't say anything really personal!!! If I ever do I'm going to blame you know who! 3. Dear Ken, First of all - are you a Sharpless? - can't remember if I ever discussed that name with you or not. I'm a Sharpless but my direct line stayed in Ridley Creek area near Phila. & we branched off in to the Baldwin, Dell, Weaver etc. My Weaver came this way. - I have a copy of the Sharpless Genealogy here. Second - if I can think of where I might have put that Quaker Cemetery stuff I got from over at the PA Room in Uniontown will dig for it & share whatever you need with you. Third - you keep it to yourself but I own a copy of Della's cemeteries of Fayette County & I'm going to bring that upstairs when I have to go down to the office & see what's there on the Redstone stuff. Della & I were personal friends for many years before she died. There is Providence Meeting House but that is not the same one that is the Quaker one we seem to be talking about her. There is a sign on Rt. 51 going towards Uniontown on the right side of the road that points to going to that old cemetery. Here's what I know about it. The biggest percentage of the stones are missing & there were some really old stones and/or burials there. I know that some of the Crawford Family is buried there & they were extremely early in the area. A good rundown on them is in the History of Fayette County by Ellis. I worked on that line & a couple branches extensively for a friend/client of mine who lives in Mississippi a few years ago. If I can try to answer any of your questions let me know. However, we won't do it on the Fayette site. It's not that I won't share. It's just that right now in my life things are going to become a lot busier on a personal basis in the next couple months & extra time won't happen. Ellen (ETHS)

    3. John I'm thinking that there might be two cemeteries in that area . I looked at names you sent. None match, the few I found there. Did someone add stones dated mid 1800s ? I found Samuel. Sharpless, and family. Your list has William Sharpless, but NO Samuel ?? If it were the Redstone Regular Baptist Church Cemetery, why didn't Della record ANY of stones I found, they would have been there then too. What book of Della Reagan's is this cemetery found ? You said that the Baptist Church was built in 1847, but held meetings before that, Did they bury in this cemetery, before that ? Just a few questions I think need cleared up, before I start looking for the other cemetery Ken

    3. Hi All, I wonder if this "Quaker "cemetery in Redstone Twp in not the one associated with the Centre Monthly Meeting? I don't know the roads in Fayette County but from the 1872 map I have figured the Centre Monthly Meeting house cemetry was located in a Y of two unimproved roads leading to Jno. McCormick's place. Up the third improved road is a listing for Wm. Sharpless, also Britts, James Craft are in the area and this cemetery is near Row Run on the map. So I wonder if this cemetery in not the old Centre MM graveyard especially if "The Church secured it for their use after it stood vacant for a number of years." means that the Redstone Baptists acquired an older church which was rebuilt/replaced. If that is the meaning of this quote then the old Centre Monthly Meeting House might have been that property and the graveyard would have come along. Sunny sent me an email one time in our searches on Peter Miller d. 1838 of Jefferson Twp. that had a will of Sabrina Sharpless setting aside money to maintain the old Center Monthly Meeting grave yard. I cannot find that email on this computer so that was earlier on. The Miller-Sharpless connection was that Peter and Tacy Maxson-Miller's daughter Margaret Miller married Jonathan Sharpless son of Joseph and Mary Sharpless as per Quaker records. They were married in 1825. I have since traced Peter and Tacy back through the Quaker records to Union Co., NJ and then back to Monmouth Co, NJ where they were probably married - at least that is where Tacy Miller submitted her letter relating to her marrying out. Tacy's parents were Mosher and Tacy ?-Maxson. I am still working on the Miller line parents but there was a mention in the Seventh Day Baptist records from this area of one Margaret Miller being baptized (adult) and removing to somewhere not stated (Hunterdon Co???) in 1774. The Maxson's were originally associated with this church.
