While looking for my grandfather Thomas Aloysius Morgan (who I found) I also found Marcellus Murray ( I think) on the W.W.I draft registration cards on Ancestry. Has anyone else made the connection? If it is him he lived longer than what was speculated as they were signed in Sept. 1918 and it was thought that he died in 1916 approx. Thanks, Lynn

Hello Lawrence, My grandma is completely Slovak so I have some knowledge in this area. Slovakia for the longest time was underneath Austria-Hungaria so as a result many Slovaks were mistakenly labeled Hungarian, Austrian, or Slovak. This is what makes Slovak genealogy SO confusing sometimes. Also Slovak is the original Slavic language so as a result some other more well known Slavic languages such as Polish or Russian were confused with it. So my guess is that the census taker heard them possibly speaking their Slovak to each other or noticed a Eastern European accent and mistakenly assumed they were speaking Russian. PA and OH were the two great Slovak hubs in America and my grandma's father was from Cleveland while her mother was from PA. Both were Slovaks off the boat. --Andrew ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lawrence Hrusovsky" <lhrusovsky@mac.com> To: <PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 19, 2004 6:25 PM Subject: Re: [PAFAY] Inquiry > Jane, > > Yes to most of your findings and I'm confused about others. Hi Larry and Jane,,, The part of the world that is now known as Slovakia has had many wars. Austria won over this country at one point. My grandfather, was b in 1886 in this area. He was b in Austria Hungary as reported on his legal documents here. Yes, he spoke Russian. Nancy

It is possible that the enumerator was given a place name he did not understand. Sometimes it seems as if an enumerator was making some assumptions, recording what he/she thought they knew or heard rather than asking for clarifications. Or, perhaps in 1930 it was more politically or socially "correct" to say you were from Austria and that you had spoken Russian in your homeland. There was another household nearby where the parents were recorded as Polish and their native language as Slovak. Do you have any ideas on other spelling variations which might have been used.? Best regards, Jane

Jane, Yes to most of your findings and I'm confused about others. John and Catherine Hrusovsky(i) to best of my knowledge were born in Jabloncia, Slovakia. Stephen was his son and Mary the wife with Ethel and Betty as their first children. They were slovak and I assume born also in Slovakia and not in Austria. Steven's native language was always slovak. John was another son and married to Anna with Helen, Ambrose, and Edward as children.Stephen and John were coal miners and their father John I assume was a farmer?? The Austria connection is a puzzlement to me as well as the Russian language. Hi, Lawrence, Welcome to the Fayette list! Smithfield area is where I live now, having retired here. My family moved from Uniontown when I was three but once the genealogy bug grabbed ahold, I moved back to Fayette from CA! Have checked four local funeral home books and find no Hrusovskys. If St. Mary's was their church then perhaps they used a Funeral Home in Masontown. There may be a listing for the cem. associated with St. Mary's in the PA Room of the Uniontown Library. Hello Jane, I believe the friendly people on this list provided me info on the 1810 census and even sent me a disk with the entire Fayette County biographies on it. I don't think I have seen the 1880 census however. James and Rachel were married in 1804 so if he's listed it could be as a boarder or as just a head of a one or two person household. Does anyone on this list know how I can attain copies of Alien registration cards or tax and land records? I would be interested in the address of the office which holds these records. I do NOT want to go tothe Mormon church for these records since they have their genealogy program so they can find dead people to baptise into their church. Sounds odd yes but this is the truth. So I will not contribute money to this. --Andrew ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jane McCann Walsh" <jmwalsh@icubed.com> To: <PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, January 19, 2004 2:32 PM Subject: Re: [PAFAY] Owen Davis descendants > At 12:54 PM 1/19/2004 -0500, you wrote: > >My Rachel Davis, as far as I can prove, was born in PA 11 May 1786.
