    3. Thank you Dawne, Now I know just a little more about my grandfather. This is exciting, I'm sorry I didn't start asking all these questions earlier. I came home from work and found all this great stuff. Thanks -------Original Message------- From: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, January 26, 2004 8:49:13 PM To: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAFAY] Garfield Bowers Dear Nancy, I found a James A. Garfield Bowers in the World War I Draft Cards. At that time he lived in Indian Head, Fayette County. He was born Sept. 9, 1883. He was a mine foreman at Harvard Coal Co. at Davistown, Fayette County. His nearest relative was Mrs. Ella Bowers of Indian Head. He was of medium height and medium build. He had gray eyes and light brown hair. The card was signed by H. R. Adams-Sept 12-1918. There is also a Garfield Bowers, age 26 in the 1910 PA Miracode Index, Fayette County. His wife is Ella, age 20, daughter Mary, age 3, Daughter Hazel NR, and Samuel Shipley, not related, age 16 living with Garfield Bowers. Even though this doesn't tell you where he went from there, I hope this helps a little. 3. Hello Beverly, Thanks for writing. I can tell you that there is no indication that Catherine Snyder Stern is a daughter of John (son of Ludwick) Snyder, as per the available secondary texts and estate records, etc. There is a decent amount of material available on John's family, mostly due to the religious careers of his eldest sons Jacob and Lewis. John Snyder (b. 1797) married Eliza J. Shaffer (her brother John Shaffer married John's sister Mary Snyder). He moved first to Bucks Twp., Tuscerawas Co., Ohio; later on to St. John's Twp., Harrison Co., Iowa, and, lastly, to where he died, in Brooklyn, Poweshiek Co., Iowa. There is some slight indication of a possible connection of my the Jacob Schneider family to the Snyders of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Pa., but I have not had the time recently to follow up that particular lead with any serious research. 3. Lorin: Hi. Thanks so much for the information on Ludwick. I've gotten quite a few responses to my inquiry, and it has certainly helped clear up some Snyder confusion over this mysterious ancestor. Thank you again for all the information I've been in touch with Ellie a bit about the John Snyder/Dewalt Snyder connection. It wasn't clear from your message: Are you descended as well from Jacob Schneider (1749) who married Gertrude Dietz? A lot of the information I have (including connection between these various Snyder families) has been provided by other researchers of these lineages, including Beverly Domer and Linda Stevens. They have really dug through the records to try to make the connections between Jacob Schneider (abt 1749, m.l Gertrude Dietz), John Snyder (abt 1795, m. Catherine Lamb) and Dewalt (1755, m. Clarissa Fetters). I'd really like to correspond with you further about these connections. The (very sparse) documentary evidence that does exist seems to indicate these lines are related, as does the intermarriage with the Weimer family over many generations. 3. Hi Jane, What a great find, it was like digging for treasure and you found gold. Now we know where to look. I didn't think he would go far, I thought he would stay in PA. People sure moved around in that county. Thanks for solving this mystery. I do appreciate you! Nancy -------Original Message------- From: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 1:25:18 PM To: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAFAY] BOWERS, Garfield found! Hi, Nancy, I apologize for the crazy message I sent you last evening. I had started that message to you while searching on Ancestry.com for Garfield Bowers. (I have a Bowers ancillary line.) Then while waiting for census pages to appear, spotted an obit for someone in my database, did a cut and paste and that obit ended up, instead of in my database, in the email to you! I had found your great-grandfather's Selective Service registration card, containing his full name as James A. Garfield Bowers and thought perhaps I might be able to find him in 1930 using James or "J.A" or "J.G." But none of that worked. And, I did not find a single Garfield Bowers in the 1930 census. I tried using Bowers without a first name and using his age which would have been 46 or maybe 47 or 45. And, that didn't produce anything like James A. Garfield Bowers. It could be that he was missed or that the enumerator's handwriting was so bad that the index has him as something very different! The Soundex did produce a James Burke (which I do not really hear or see as similar) age 46 living in Jefferson Twp., Greene County w/ Mabel 35, Maria 15, Thomas 11, James 6, and John 4 mo's. Certainly not the right names for the older two children. Then tried finding Lester Bowers age 18. Found one in Arlington, VA, son of a William and siblings whose names didn't fit either! Finally, went back today to look for Indian Head in Salt Lick Twp. and couldn't find Salt Lick. Ancestry has it recorded as "Saltlick." The first page I chose was "missing!" Found that there are 50 pages. The third page I selected was "missing." Maybe your Garfield was on one of these missing pages. There may be more missing! I did find a Daniel Ohler Family on pp. 39-40. Looks like this enumerator did not record the names of unincorporated places!! Just as I had given up the search, recalled that one can use a wildcard approach, so I tried "Garfield Bow*" in PA. Found!!! In Donegal Twp., Westmoreland County. Garfield "Bowns" in the index but it sure looks like "Bowers" to me! He is in the #29 dwelling, age 48! With him are: dau. Edith 15 and son Howard 12. Garfield is working as a laborer for a coal company. This was image 3 of 25! Whew. Best regards, Jane ==== PAFAYETT Mailing List ==== The Uniontown Library NEW URL- http://www.uniontownlib.org/ .

    2. Edward
    3. Hello Andrew and others, The obituaries being posted on this list are being posted not only by myself, but by other volunteers, and we will continue to do so. Obituaries are the life-blood of genealogical research, and as such are right on topic for this list. Every obit posted to this list is one obit for the archives, and one that is made freely available to all future generations of researchers. The way I see it, if you don't care to receive the obits, you and others have several choices to make: 1. Configure your e-mail application to filter anything with "Obit" in the subsject line; Switch to the digest version of the list; 2. get more e-mail space from your server; 3. swicth to a sevrer that gives ample room for a researcher to conduct research; 4. Unsubscribe from the list. This is not intended to be a discussion of the posting of the obits by the volunteers, and I do not wish to see the discussion continued on the list. This is the way things are done on this list. If you and others cannot deal with the above listed options, I will help you unsubscribe. 3. Sally, A "next friend" is a person who, without being regularly appointed as guardian, acts for the benefit of an infant, incompetent, or other person not fully capable of acting on their own behalf. In some jurisdictions years ago, this included married women. A next friend normally would not have been the person's lawyer. Hope this helps. However, a chart indicating which State's Mortality Schedule publication status does not show that PA's has been published or indexed. According to this chart the Family History Library does have a copy. The NARA Micropublication number is T958.
