Grant, From what has been posted, it does not appear that anyone has suggested that the obit postings stop. Rather put the obits into a format that would be user friendly. The individual postings are cumbersome to the system and cause the users to continually waste valuable research time. I will send you a copy of a couple of the communications sent to Ed. Which by the way, Edwards response to my suggestion, was in some type of computer slang, and not appreciated. I did not see any postings that were rude or with out possible alternatives to the dilvery of Obit information. Take a look and see what you think. If every list did this, we all would spend a great deal of time daily, deleting obit's daily. In todays world the term "De Boss!" is completely out of line. Administrator is one thing, but "De Boss!" well that type of "My way or the highway!" attitude does not serve the better purpose of the list. Well Intended Lister, Janet ****************************************************************** Hello Andrew and others, The obituaries being posted on this list are being posted not only by myself, but by other volunteers, and we will continue to do so. Obituaries are the life-blood of genealogical research, and as such are right on topic for this list. Every obit posted to this list is one obit for the archives, and one that is made freely available to all future generations of researchers. The way I see it, if you don't care to receive the obits, you and others have several choices to make: 1. Configure your e-mail application to filter anything with "Obit" in the subsject line; Switch to the digest version of the list; 2. get more e-mail space from your server; 3. swicth to a sevrer that gives ample room for a researcher to conduct research; 4. Unsubscribe from the list. This is not intended to be a discussion of the posting of the obits by the volunteers, and I do not wish to see the discussion continued on the list. This is the way things are done on this list. If you and others cannot deal with the above listed options, I will help you unsubscribe. Sincerely, De Boss Edward ********************************************************************* ----- Original Message ----- From: "brainiac1082" <brainiac1082@netzero.net> To: <jcb486@cox.net>; <genedoc@icubed.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 9:52 AM Subject: please stop posting obits > Hello guys I know you're trying to help by posting obits but is there any > way you could just post it on the message board instead of flooding ppl's > emails w/ them? See what you think? I receive the Herald Standard via e-mail daily. I live out of State and enjoy reading what is going on in the area, it just had occured to me that this format would only serve to add to your efforts. Also, Glenn Tunney has his Brownsville Column and Time Capsule link in the paper. Sharing his link or having his articles appear on site might be of interest to those folks from the Brownsville Area. Actually, I was born in Brownsville, as were many generations of our family. My Grandfather Francis B. Curry sold Prudential Insurance for forty years in the Fayette County and surrounding areas, he was a trusted friend in the Community. In addition my Uncle was a Priest in the Diocese of Greensburg, during his life Rev. Father Curry had many parrishes in the area throught his service to God. So you see I to am always interested in the lives of those that live in Fayette County and beyond for many well connected reasons. I hope you understand that my suggestions are honorable and in no way ment to be critical, as some might have you think. Thanks for all you do, it is appreciated. Regards, Janet ****************************************************************** GONG! Sincerely, Edward ****************************************************************** ---- Original Message ---- From: jlworendorff@copper.net To: ellen@b-n-s.com Subject: FW: RE: [PAFAY] To Ed on Newspapers Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 02:25:14 -00 Ellen, Just a post script to your conversation with Ed. The formal name of the Newspaper is The Herald Standard, the paper is online and does post it's obits. (http://www.heraldstandatd.com) I receive the paper by e-mail daily, I live out of state and enjoy scanning the area news. We all appreciate that Ed is keeping himself busy with his worth while work. Although, it would be even nicer if the Obits were recorded and maybe posted once a week or twice a month for those that are interested. The site address could be included. It would be great to have the obit information posted in a quick easy to read format. Maybe something like the Census. Then one could use their Internet Explorer to Edit/find specific names being sought. Time is at such a premium for most researchers, retired or not. The deleting process is very time consuming. Dawne, I'm afraid I got it all wrong. My Grandmother Elizabeth could not have been the baby, she had to be the oldest and was already out of the house in 1910. My Mom was born in 1913, and she had three or four older siblings. You sure got Elmer and Susie's children right. All four of them, only Elizabeth Jane is missing. Is it possible to find that family in the 1900 census? -------Original Message------- From: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 8:35:39 PM To: PAFAYETT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAFAY] Elmer MILLER, b. 1887 Georges Twp. Dawne, I'm getting jealous now. I'm going to have to subscribe to the census. You guys are finding my people so fast. Thank you. This explains a lot, I didn't know my grandmother was the baby of the family, but she was a brat. So Andrew was 11 and along comes the last little girl and she is spoiled rotten. Hello my fellow researchers, I have updated my web site containing my family history. About 95% of the people are related in someway to my wife or myself (The others are parents of wives or husbands and such). While it contains the names of living people, no information or pictures are shown. I have only been doing this for a few years. I hope that you will enjoy looking at the information. I am sending this to all the sites I subscribe to, hoping for feed back and new and undated information. If you have pictures of some of these people I would love to have a copy to post. There are over 10,000 pages of data. Here are some of the names and locations, Talbot, Talbott, Talbert, Horn, Horne, Sapp, Coody, Holder, Myers, Mason, Gooden, Ansell, Shazer, Shozer, Huey, Collins, Hickle, Ticsnel, Deavers, Shifflett, Roach, De Vers, Taverner, Neale, Devere, McDaniel, Wood, Dean, Kimble, Batton. Here are some of the areas of the family. Fairfax Co., Va., Rockingham Co., Va., and other parts of Va. Fayette Co., Pa., Uniontown Pa. Georgia, Dodge Co., South Carolina. Hi, Nancy, I apologize for the crazy message I sent you last evening. I had started that message to you while searching on Ancestry.com for Garfield Bowers. (I have a Bowers ancillary line.) Then while waiting for census pages to appear, spotted an obit for someone in my database, did a cut and paste and that obit ended up, instead of in my database, in the email to you! I had found your great-grandfather's Selective Service registration card, containing his full name as James A. Garfield Bowers and thought perhaps I might be able to find him in 1930 using James or "J.A" or "J.G." But none of that worked. And, I did not find a single Garfield Bowers in the 1930 census. I tried using Bowers without a first name and using his age which would have been 46 or maybe 47 or 45. And, that didn't produce anything like James A. Garfield Bowers. It could be that he was missed or that the enumerator's handwriting was so bad that the index has him as something very different! The Soundex did produce a James Burke (which I do not really hear or see as similar) age 46 living in Jefferson Twp., Greene County w/ Mabel 35, Maria 15, Thomas 11, James 6, and John 4 mo's. Certainly not the right names for the older two children. Then tried finding Lester Bowers age 18. Found one in Arlington, VA, son of a William and siblings whose names didn't fit either! Finally, went back today to look for Indian Head in Salt Lick Twp. and couldn't find Salt Lick. Ancestry has it recorded as "Saltlick." The first page I chose was "missing!" Found that there are 50 pages. The third page I selected was "missing." Maybe your Garfield was on one of these missing pages. There may be more missing! I did find a Daniel Ohler Family on pp. 39-40. Looks like this enumerator did not record the names of unincorporated places!! Just as I had given up the search, recalled that one can use a wildcard approach, so I tried "Garfield Bow*" in PA. Found!!! In Donegal Twp., Westmoreland County. Garfield "Bowns" in the index but it sure looks like "Bowers" to me! He is in the #29 dwelling, age 48! With him are: dau. Edith 15 and son Howard 12. Garfield is working as a laborer for a coal company. This was image 3 of 25! Whew. Best regards, Jane
