Agnes SOLAK, 98, of Norvelt, died Tuesday at Frick Community Health Center, Mount Pleasant. She was born Jan 1, 1889 in Poland, a daughter of the late Lawrence and Josephine Kiel Giernacky. She was a member of St. Stanislaus RC Church of Calumet and its Rosary Society. She lived in Norvelt for 52 years. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Josephine) Kellner of Ligonier, Sophie, Martha and Beatrice, all at home, Mrs. Thomas (Bridget) Kitta of Mount Pleasant, and Mrs. Patsy (Florence) Conte of Greensburg; two sons, Walter of Antioch, Calif., and Robert Solak of Norvelt; 22 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren. I have a death certificate for a g-grandfather who was buried in 1900. He was from Confluence and it states he was buried in 'Far Wide Cemetery' . I cannot seem to find one by that name. Has anyone heard of this cemetery? I thought maybe it is called something else or perhaps it was in Somerfield. Any thoughts appreciated. Bobbi K

Caleb ANTRAM died at his residence in this place Thursday morning, Feb. 11, 1892, at 10 o'clock, aged 87 years. He was born in Fayette County, Pa., in 1805, and was a son of Caleb ANTRAM, who came to this state from Virginia, and settled near Perryopolis, Pa., where the subject of this sketch was born. The deceased was married three times. His first wife, Nancy BOYD, and to them were born five children, two are dead and three are living. Robert, who married a daughter of Joseph WOODWARD, deceased, and who lives in La Salle County, Illinois; Rebecca, who married Conwell PORTER and lives in Grand Ridge, Illinois; Joseph, who married Mary HIBBS, and lives on the home farm near New Salem, Pa. There were no children by the second and third wives. His first wife died in 1855, and the second, who was Elizabeth PORTER, in 1867. His third wife was Mary M. RIFFLE. Unrelated to me. Jesse PROVANCE, of Geneva, Pa., died Wednesday, March 31, 1897, at 11 o'clock, after a lingering illness. The deceased was born August 14, 1818, on the farm known in by gone years as the "Provance Bottoms". His father was David PROVANCE. With the exception of Elisha PROVANCE, a half brother, who lives in West Virginia, the deceased was the last son of a numerous family. He was identified in early days with the keel boat trade from this point to Pittsburgh and was captain and pilot on the Globe, the first steamboat that ever went as far as Fairmont, West Virginia, sometime in the early 50's(1850's) Unrelated to me. Captain C.C. KREPPS, Last Of Old Centerville Family, Civil War Veteran, Succumbs In Columbus Relatives here today announced the death of Captain Christopher C. KREPPS, 94, Civil War Veteran, and a native of Centerville, Pa., who died last Saturday at his home in Columbus, Ohio. Captain Krepps served with the famous Ringgold Cavalry, enlisting from Centerville at the outset of the Civil War. Later he was transferred to a unit in West Virginia, of which he was commander when the war terminated. For the last two score years Captain Krepps has resided in the Ohio city. He was the last of the old KREPPS Family of Centerville, Pa. He leaves five sons and two daughters, all residents of other states. His funeral was Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, with burial in a cemetery there. Nieces and nephews of this district who survive include: Mrs. K.K. Higenbotham, Mrs. Emma Craft, and Sol G. KREPPS, Sr., all of South Brownsville, Pa.; George KREPPS and Helen KREPPS, of Heisterburg(Luzerne Township, Fayette County, Pa.), and John KREPPS, of Uniontown, Pa. Joseph James BUFFERS, 78, of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, April 13, 1994, at Frick Hospital and Community Health Center, Mount Pleasant. He was born Oct. 3, 1915, at Mount Pleasant, a son of the late Peter and Theresa Guido Buffers. He was self-employed for more than 45 years as a decorator in Mount Pleasant. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post 446, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3368, was a life member of the BPO Elks 868, all of Mount Pleasant, and a life member of the Knights of Columbus, third degree. He also was a member and served as an usher at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Mount Pleasant. Surviving are his wife, Frances Pernatozzi Buffers; one son, Joseph A. Buffers of Mount Pleasant, R.D. 7; two brothers, Frank and Paul Buffers, both of Mount Pleasant; and one sister, Rosemarie Buffers, also of Mount Pleasant. Harry L. "Tut" Callahan, 80, of Point Marion, Pa., passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2004, in the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, following a lengthy illness. Born in the Charleston, W.Va., on April 1, 1923, he was a son of the late Harry James and Mary Elizabeth HATCHER CALLAHAN. He was a graduate of Charleston High School in 1941, and of West Virginia University in 1947. A lifetime member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, he served for many years on the House Corporation of the Mu Mu Chapter in Morgantown. He was proud to be a West Virginian, loved being a Mountaineer, and was a life member of the WVU Alumni Association. A veteran of WWII, Tut enlisted as a Cadet in the Army Air Corps in 1942, and served in the European Theater of Operations as a C-47 pilot. During this time, he personally published, edited, and distributed the Mu Mu News, which provided information to and from all of his fraternity brothers and their families who were stationed throughout the world serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. He remained in the Air Force Reserves for 24 years, and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was a member and Lay Leader of the Point Marion United Methodist Church, and had directed the Men's Choir of the former Trinity Methodist Church for many years. In 1950, Tut came to Point Marion, where he owned and operated the family furniture and appliance business, Clar-Mac Sales, until his retirement in 1986. He was very involved in many community activities, including Past President of both the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce, and life member of the American Legion, Post 499, and the V.F.W., Post 747. In 1978, and during his tenure as President of the Chamber, he started the Albert Gallatin Regatta. He was the Chairman of the Local Salvation Army Service Unit, which operated the Food Bank and assisted with the victims of the 1985 Flood. He served on the Board for the Fayette County United Way, and the Albert Gallatin Visiting Nurses. He is a Member Emeritus of the Board of Directors of the Foundation of the Monongalia General Hospital and the Smithfield State Bank. It was primarily through his efforts that Smithfield Bank came to Point Marion, maintaining a locally owned bank for area residents. He was Governor of Rotary International, District 733 in 1986, and was a Paul Harris Fellow and a Rotary Benefactor. His Masonic memberships include Valley Lodge #459 in Masontown, Pa., Uniontown Lodge of Perfection, 32nd Degree in the Pittsburgh Consistory, and the Syria Temple in Pittsburgh. Tut was instrumental in the development of the lives of many young people in Point Marion. He taught Sunday School for the High School Class at Trinity Church, was Cub Scout Master for many years, and gave many young men of the community their first job at his store, teaching them, as he had learned, the value of hard work, good education, and the benefits of military experience. In addition to his family and community, his hobbies included playing the piano at church functions, fraternity gatherings, Rotary meetings, and wherever anyone enjoyed, as he did, the old ragtime tunes. Also, he loved to travel, and throughout his lifetime had traveled all over the world. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joan McClain Callahan, four children and their spouses, Beth and Larry Reseter of Kaneohe, Hawaii, Rence and Barbara Callahan of Winston-Salem, NC, Meg and Van Lloyd of Irvine, California, and David and Zoann Callahan of Point Marion, ten grandchildren, Megan Reseter, Tyler Reseter, Lawren Callahan, Jay Callahan, Emmy Lloyd Curtin, Kathleen Lloyd, Hunt Lloyd, C.J. Callahan, Paige Callahan, and Drew Callahan; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Curtin; a niece Melissa Ham of Charlotte, NC, and a nephew, Chris Callahan of Charleston, WV. Predeceased is a brother James Eugene Callahan. The family will receive friends in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday in the Point Marion United Methodist Church from noon until 1:00 p.m., the hour of service, with the Rev. Nicholas Cook and the Rev. James Lewis officiating. Private interment will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion.
