Well, I have been with AOL since I got my computer in 2000 and this is the first time I've had a problem. I, for one, like AOL. I won't get into a discussion about the positives and negatives about AOL, but I think the problem is solved and I am back. All of my rootsweb emails are back again so I am satisfied with the outcome. Now, back to genealogy: The names I am researching in Fayette county are Wolford, Jones, Riggans. I also am descended from Hardy, but most of my research is with the first 3 names above. I've had the hardest time finding info on Riggans. (spelling varies) Good luck everyone! Cindy In a message dated 1/31/2004 11:47:42 PM Eastern Standard Time, dittdad@md.net writes: The solution to AOL's blocking of rootsweb lists is simple; all rootsweb members, who have AOL accounts, should just cancel their AOL accounts and subscribe to another ISP. It's as simple as that and you won't have to worry about whether you will receive rootsweb lists messages or not. Sooner or later AOL will get the message that rootsweb messages are not SPAM. You may even save money too. Since dropping AOL in August 2002, my current ISP has not let one SPAM message through, and has not blocked one roootsweb list message. Jerry Dittman Boonsboro, MD
Just wanted to thank all for properly using the subject line for the AOL discussion. I just keep deleting them & don't feel like I'm missing a thing for a genealogy info. In other words - I'm not being a smart-alec. I'm just pointing out how important the subject line is in case one is not interested in what's in the body of the message. It's called hit the delete key! Ellen (ETHS) email: ellen@b-n-s.com Visit my web site: http://www.geocities.com/ellenj3
Victoria... Point taken about "being clogged" with the AOL/Rootsweb business. Remember, though, that this was something that affected a pretty good size portion of your fellow list-mates, whose postings I'm sure you've profited from now and then. In any event, as I've done with various obits, etc., posted on this list, I use the delete key. Yes, it can get a little tiresome, I know. But, there's not a lot of posting on the Fayette list that I keep...I delete a good many postings weekly, if not daily. It's part of the territory. I'd like to think that if the problem were with Hotmail, MSN, Earthlink, or whatever, that I'd be patient until things ran their course for those folks. As this is an email mailing list with subscribers, when a large portion of these subscribers are having a shared problem receiving their subscriptions, it is indeed a problem for the whole list, if only temporarily. It was due to the action of the various Rootsweb list administrators who contacted the AOL Postmaster that the problem was resolved. The teapot tempest has subsided. Lets cool our jets, enjoy each others genealogical postings, and hope that anti-spam technology can continue to be fine tuned enough to avoid what we've been through. Be assured that AOL users didn't enjoy firing off flares to see just how pervasive the problem was. I know this one didn't. David in Richmond
