    3. There is another point one might consider when viewing gedcoms posted online which do not show sources ( or notes). Though some have recommended not putting personal data into such sources (or notes), many of us do. This includes mailing addresses and phone numbers in the source data, and very personal information in the notes. It is for this reason than I have chosen to have Rootsweb 'turn off' my sources and notes. However, I do have a message posted that individuals may contact me if they need further data on where I obtained my information. This still enables researchers to find connections, and have a contact point for the sources or repositories of my data, while still protecting personal and private information. It is not a matter of being selfish or worrying that someone will copy 'MY' data because I gladly share with those who need it. For me, a database comprised only of dates, marriages, and children or other dry 'facts' is of minimal use. It's all those personal details that help to bring all these relationships 'alive' for me, and my main reason for collating the information in my database. I feel certain this is among the reasons that many others do not post sources and citations online, as well.
