Hi Peggy, The main objective of the GEDCOM standard was to have a file that is limited to ASCII text so that anyone would be able to build an import and export function to exchange data. Once you start to include non-ASCII code such as photos or images, then the whole point of GEDCOM is lost. However, I suspect that GEDCOM will be supplanted some day with an XML standard and everyone will have to convert their import and export routines to support the XML version. I have actually seen a document that is an XML version of GEDCOM, so I know that it is in the works.
