Continuing with Lorin's comments, if you have a new computer you may still need to install your printer. (If the printer and computer came as a package it may be pre-installed) If you do not know how to do that we can help, but you need to tell us the printer model, whether it will use the USB cable or the parallel cable connection, and ideally what Dell you have and what operating system (probably XP). The USB printers usually have a specific order you need to follow to install them, using the installation disk that came with the printer. Windows will generally have the drivers built in for many older printers but you still need to install them so Windows knows what printer you have hooked up. I know this is a strange request but..... Is there a super simple computer any more. My Dell went "kaput" and I am finding HP's that no longer have the "A" drive. That isn't the problem. I'm sure Dell has the same type of advanced computer. I just can't seem to keep up with technology. I now have a HP m7067c. It it going back! I have spent so many hours attempting to learn this thing that we have decided it just too much. Any one that has a suggestion other than "Keep it", please let me know. Thanks, Jill in AZ
It depends on what you mean by simple. In some ways the newer computers are easier to use BUT they are certainly different from the old DOS days. I never could keep straight all the DOS command line stuff. Every DOS program seemed to be set up differently. The newer programs usually have a layout that has some visual consistency - like the menu placement and options for, save, open, edit, etc. So once you learn the basic Windows structure you can find your way around most programs pretty easily. At the same time, the newer computers have so much more horsepower that the programs written for them have also gotten more complex and have more options. Floppy drives are going the way of the dinosaur because floppies themselves are obsolete. They are big for the small amount of data they can hold (1.44 MB) and are relatively easy to damage. If you really need a floppy drive, there are external ones that will plug into the USB port. Sending the new computer back and staying with the obsolete has it's own problems, such as not being able to repair it when hardware eventually fails or not being able to migrate important data as the software advances. I think the best option is to go someplace such as the local high school, community college or senior center that provides adult education classes and take a basic computer class in Windows. Once you have a good handle on Windows basics, most programs will have enough similarity that you will be able to muddle through them . Jill, before you return the PC, pay a visit to this HP site. There is a lot of advice there and links to manuals you can download: http://tinyurl.com/8h2zy They may be of some assistance. The HP m7067c model seems to be orientated towards media and may not be exactly your "cup of tea" (mine neither :-)). I would guess that the salesman has "upsized" (as they say at McDonald's) your original request, to a model you could have done without. HP do make less sophisticated machines so if you have no success with this one, they may be able to exchange it for something more useful to you. HP allow you to customize any model. For example, this model - a1130e - is less daunting than your present HP m7067c. If you look at this page - http://tinyurl.com/dsgvm and click CUSTOMIZE - you will see you can add a floppy drive for an extra $20 to the a1130e. I should imagine that would apply to the m7067c also. Next time you visit the store you purchased it from, talk to a different salesperson, preferably the owner/manager.
