Beverly, I don't know the intention of the program writers, but I do recognize its limitations. Like you, I'd like it to show the relationship to each parent (Biological to the biological parent) and Adopted or Guardian to the second spouse. Since the program doesn't do that, I think your solution is the best we can do. Your notes approach is exactly the way I approach it.
