The term "UNKNOWN" for a spouse is added in by PAF when you create a marriage but are unable to supply the name of the spouse - or when you add a child with only one parent identified. It is really quite logical - if one of the spouses or one of the parents is not known, PAF supplies the term "UNKNOWN". Note however, that this unknown individual does not occupy a RIN space on the system. If you subsequently find out a name for the unknown spouse, simply double click on the unknown spouse --- add in the details, then PAF will ask you if these details are to take the place of the unknown spouse or does it represent another spouse in addition to the unknown spouse. So, for a genuine known marriage without the name of one of the spouses or for children where both parents are not known - you will not be able to get rid of the "UNKNOWN" designation. If, however, the "UNKNOWN" has been created because you accidentally initiated a marriage record - simply deleting the marriage record will get rid of the unknown spouse.
