You can find the unlink in the edit menu. Before you use it, this is one place where using the RINs is useful. If you write down the RINs of the individuals when you unlink them. it is a lot easier to add them to where they are supposed to be by using the recorded RINs. You can turn on the RIN display under the Preference>Name tab. After you are done, turn it back off is you like. I don't have a clue what is causing the other problem, but as you seem to indicate the positioning of the individuals may fix the problem.
