    1. [PAF-5] Comparing Databases
    2. Is there a way to compare PAF5 databases to find differences? I have a backup from a few years ago that I'd like to compare to a current version of a database to find individuals in the current version who were not in the older version. Paul </HTML>

PAF Insight has a Compare and Sync feature designed to do exactly that. You can use PAF Insight at your local Family History Center or you can buy it at www.ohanasoftware.com Aloha, John

    3. Paul: You can use either Ancestral Quest or PAFWiz to compare two PAF databases. You would go to the Tools menu, then to the "Compare/Merge Databases" option. Open either database, create a CUSTOM report with RIN, Surname, givenname, birthdate; print to file as (database1). Close file Open 2nd database: create a CUSTOM report with RIN, Surname, givenname, birthdate; print to file as (database2). Close file. Open WINDOWS EXPLORER (file manager) -- find the two new files. are they _exactly_ the same size (+/-2 or fewer bytes)? Yes = no differences. No = differences. Open database1.rtf in any word-processing program (WordPad, WORD, WP, whatever). Cursor to bottom. INSERT database2.rtf. SAVE-AS COMBO.rtf. Highlight ALL of database2.rtf. SAVE. Under TABLE, select SORT TEXT, by Paragraph, Text. Now eyeball it -- Names that are in both databases will form a color-white-color-white pattern. Changes in the pattern will indicate something in one that isn't in the other. I grant it is probably easier and faster to buy one of the recommended programs, but it is POSSIBLE to do it without spending money. FWIW Cheryl -- There should be no attachments on this message, unless I specifically mentioned them above.
