    1. [PAF-5] WHAT AM I DOING WRONG - GEDCOM
    2. Mark Barker
    3. What am I doing wrong? I would like to export gedcom. I click on file, then on export. In the window that opens, I click on paf5 in the right hand side and in the left hand side I click on the bolocks I want to be included e.g. notes included/not included. At the bottom I select all individuals and click on export. A window opens and closes with a great speed showing that info colected and then a window opens "export file as" - I click on save in desktop, click on new file, and then on export and nothing happens. I find the new file on my desktop but with nothing in it. What am I doing wrong? kind regards Mark Barker

    3. Hi, when it says Save as... you need to type in what you want the new file to be named. Hope this helps. Barb G. 2. Mark, You have gotten a variety of opinions, but it seems you still don't have an answer. Here is what I just did to test out your procedure. I opened PAF and selected FILE>Export with the options of PAF5, all the check boxes checked, and all selected. I then selected export to save to the desktop with test.ged, and then waited as it exported all of the individuals and the marriages. With PAF closed (an important step if you want to try this process), I double clicked on the GED. That brings up PAF and asks if I want to create a new database to import the data into. I say yes and it imports it. If you leave your database open before you double click, I have found that it simply import the data into the open database (why I said to be careful). You can also right click on the file and select notepad or word pad to open the GED file. That will show you the ASCII content of the GED file. The different versions on the left of the Export window provide you GED files for different standards of the GED definition. Sometimes it is worth being able to go backward for other folks. If you get nothing, try it with all selected rather than a select set of folks to check the process. If this latter step works, then you need to review how you are selecting folks for export. Remember, you have to actually select them in the select window, not just chose an option (but execute it also). Bill > What am I doing wrong? I would like to export gedcom. Although there is the possibility if there is some other program on his computer (GenViewer, Family Tree Maker...) that gedcoms may not be associated with PAF. If that happens, start a new database in PAF and Click File_Import. > I say yes and it > imports it. And Mark, to add to what he is warning about, if you import back into the existing database you will create duplicates. Easy to merge them based on the UID number, or restore from your backup, but better to avoid. Gary
