Hi Hoping this knowledge bank can solve my problem. What I've done is copied PAF 4 file to CD-R which was running on Windows 98. Downloaded PAF 5 onto Vista (Adobe reader reads Users Guide OK). Now I can't seem to import file from Drive E without following message "specified path does not exist". I have kept the old computer just to safeguard years of work and I do have access at my husbands office to Windows XP if I have to transfer to XP before transfer to Vista. In short can someone please give me step by step instructions on how to transfer myWindows98 PAF4 file into the new Vista with PAF 5 ?? Apologies to all about another Vista question, but I have tried to read/comprehend previous Vista postings to solve this with no success. Regards Viv Callaghan
A questions is appropriate that you did not comment on: 1. In Windows Explorer, can you see anything on the CD from VISTA (maybe from 98 also)? 2. Assuming yes, open PAF5 and then go to FILE>Open and select the PAF file on the CD. PAF5 will ask you some questions about the conversion and then proceed to complete it. I do not remember if it asks where you want the conversion placed, if it does just provide the folder you want to use on the VISTA harddrive. I strongly recommend you do not put it in the PAF5 program folder. You may want to make a subfolder labeled DATA. (Subfolders are good for all of the extra files so that they do not get mixed with the program. You can set the folders under TOOLS>PREFERENCES>Folders. In fact, I would set the folders before I do the opening above.) If you are not asked for a location, either copy the PAF4 file to the data folder and open that one or save to your data folder (FILE>SAVE). You can not import the file because it is not a GEDCOM. PAF5 can read PAF4 files, but converts them in the process. I would copy the file from the CD to the hard drive, to any convenient location such as MyDocuments. (The file should NOT be copied to Vista's root directory folder.) Then I would right-click on the file's icon and select Properties > remove the check mark from the Read-Only attribute (placed there by Windows when the file was saved on the CD) > Apply > OK Then I would open the file in PAF5 and follow the prompts to convert it from PAF 4 to PAF 5 format. I read the previous replies. The tech language boggled me--and I have no experience with Vista. I see an easy work-around, assuming that both computers can access the Internet. Create a GedCom from the PAF-4 in the old machine. Include notes, confidential notes, absolutely everything. Upload it to Rootsweb's World Connect. On the options page, display only what you really want to display; notes are often not displayed, you choose. The living are not displayed. After it is established at Rootsweb (about 36 hours) download it into a new PAF-5 database in your machine that runs Vista. It only takes your username and password to accomplish this. I just downloaded and installed a file because I had inadvertently deleted the notes from one person--and I'll delete it after I paste her notes back in. If you really don't want to display anything at WorldConnect, there's a place on the page to "remove GedCom". If you leave your data there, you'll receive E-mails from cousins you never knew you had! In my opinion, waiting for an upload and a download to Rootsweb is way more complex and time consuming than taking the CD she already has and simply putting it in the drive on the Vista computer. At that point it is only a mater of doing the right thing depending on what kind of file she has. 1. If a GEDCOM, create a new file in PAF 5 and *import* the GEDCOM. The same File_Import procedure will have to happen to rootsweb downloads, but using the CD would be without the wait. 2. If it is a PAF 4 file (extension .paf) open it in PAF 5 by clicking File_Open. It will get converted to the PAF 5 format. Select a new name and make sure you choose a location (other than the CD drive) to save it that you will remember. 3. If it is a PAF 4 backup (file extension .bak) you would click File_Restore and choose PAF3/4 in the file type box Select the file and say yes to any warnings. For all options, it *probably* will not matter that the original file would be read-only, since it will be converted to a different file anyway. But if there are any errors, just follow Kevin's instructions to right-click and select properties, then remove the check mark on the read only box. Viv, This doesn't sound to me to be a Vista issue. The File you are trying to put in PAF5 is a PAF4 Database correct? Or is it a PAF4 GEDCOM file? My understanding is... if it's GEDCOM, you do an "Import"... if it's a PAF database you do an "Open". (Assuming that PAF 5 can open and convert a PAF 4 database) Also, if it IS a PAF4 database, then copy it to your hard drive first, then you'll also likely have to set the "Read Only" attribute OFF. (When you put stuff to CD, it marks the files as Read Only) You can do that by right mouse on the file once you have it copied to your hard drive, select "properties", then turn off the "Read-only" attribute at the bottom of the properties screen. Then do the "open" in PAF.
