There is really no answer to what a person "should" purchase. It all depends on what they are trying to accomplish, their budget, and what functions they would perfer to automate rather than do manually. I have limited need to print charts so PAF Companion or other charting programs are of low interest to me. Others are charting fools. Non-members, or members who are only submitting occasional names to the temple, may not see a need for programs such as Insight that speed up the search for ordinance information. And of course, very fine genealogy can still be done with paper and pencil and no software at all. What would probably be most valuable for your meeting is an outline of what each piece of software does, what it costs, and perhaps a short demonstration of how it might be of benefit in a particular situation. Beyond that, it is such an individual decision (like what is the best car to buy) that each person has to evaluate their own needs and desires. I will send you in another email a 4 page Word document of a presentation I gave last summer of "Software Gems" for the genealogist. It has a (very) short description of what the software does and includes web links so people can go to the site and research it for themselves. And since many are free programs anyway, they can test those with no financial commitment. Feel free to make copies to hand out.
