    2. Don, PAF does not have the option to print to PDF. However, you can use a PDF printer if you designate it as the default printer before you start PAF up. I use Cute PDF Writer. It works well for me on an XP machine. I don't know about WIN 7. I am sending you a paper that will explain it. Since I can't send attachment on this list it will come by separate email. 3. On XP when I wanted to print, I could produce PAF reports directly to PDF format. Just click on print and it let you select which one you wanted. I used a PDF writer given to me by someone on this list plus I had CUTE PDF writer. So these plus actual printers, I had a lot of capability. I tried to print your attachment on another computer and printer and it printed blank. I will try to figure that one out. I just don't like Win-7. Don

As for where to put the image files: With your PAF file at: C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5.paf I would put images at: C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\XXXXXX.jpg or C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\images\xxxxxx.jpg or C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5_images\xxxxxx.jpg or C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5_images\birth_cert\xxxxxx.jpg C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5_images\death_cert\xxxxxx.jpg C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5_images\census\xxxxxx.jpg or C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5_images\surname1\xxxxxx.jpg C:\Documents and Settings\genie_grannie\MyDocuments\MyFamily5_images\surname2\xxxxxx.jpg If you put the image files in any of these folders PAF will store just the part of the path that is different from the PAF file's path. I.e. for that last example PAF will store just .\MyFamily5_images\surname2\xxxxxx.jpg Whereas if you put an image file at C:\temp\images\xxxxxx.jpg PAF will store C:\temp\images\xxxxxx.jpg The mode where PAF stores just the last part of the path, the part that is different is called a 'relative' path. The later example is called an 'absolute path'. If you are going to use PAF5MediaPacker to assemble a single zip archive (to share with family) containing all of your multimedia files along with the PAF file then you want relative paths. Bill covered linking images in to the scrapbook. But there is another place to link images in. These would be images of evidence documents. In the citation window, to the right of 'Comments' and below the 'Actual Text' button there is a button that is labeled: 'Image...' That is where you link in an evidentiary image (or audio recording, or video, ... ) -- I've written a book(let) *"The God I Know"* available at Lulu.com

    1. [PAF-5] Citing Sources
    2. I cannot figure out how to cite sources in a Modified Register Report. This is what I want to do. I want to have the full text of the sources print out at the end of a book report, with each source printed out only once. For example, Mary Smith, the first person in the report, was born on 3 April 1900. I know this because I found the record in the XYZ Church records for 1900. I want a superscript 1 to appear after the birth date, and the full text of the source to appear at the end of the report as "1. XYZ Church Records for 1900." If later in the report, I cite John Brown, who also appears in the XYZ Church Records for 1900, I want the superscript 1 to appear after his birth date, which will point to "1. XYZ Church Records for 1900" in the source list. In other words, I want the full text of any given source to appear only once. I do not want a bunch of ibids. My main genealogy program is Brother's Keeper, which does what I want to do beautifully. However, I want to use PAF for backup and for some of their reports. I have stepped through all the options in PAF a dozen times, and still cannot achieve what I want. Any help will be much appreciated. Carole

    1. Re: [PAF-5] Saving and cataloging images
    2. Bill Buchanan
    3. Gladys, In your place, I would create a folder for your images and either move your PAF data file into that folder or place the folder beside your PAF data file. This will allow PAF to use Relative links, which means that you can copy your data and images to a flash drive, external drive, or a different computer without breaking the links. To catalog the images, there are many possibilities. The simplest I have found is to rename the image files so something like "Wright Thomas Richard (1852) 1881 Census" (and leave the rest of the original image name if you wish). Images that refer to multiple members of a family can be linked to each person or to the head of the family. This naming convention identifies the image as the 1881 census image of Thomas Richard Wright born in 1852. If you have two people with exactly the same name born the same year you can add a description that makes it clear which one it is. To link a PAF record to an image, highlight the person's record, click the camera and browse to the image (another good reason to have all images in the same folder). If the image is in Adobe PDF format, you will need to say the item is a video clip rather than a photo. The process is repetitive but not complicated. To view all of the images linked to an individual, highlight the individual, click on the camera icon and then click on Scrapbook. Remember that the images do not become part of the PAF database. PAF has simply added links that point to where the images are really located. So if you delete an image from the folder it is gone from PAF. If you move EITHER the data file or the images folder without moving the OTHER, the relative links will not work. I have probably made it sound more complicated than it really is. If you need further help, please post another message. 3. I have used special templates for specific files. One such template had an event selected that I no longer care to use. I checked the format of the template and that event is not listed among the items that should show up on the family screen, but it does. I can see no way of getting rid of that event other than opening each file and selecting "Other" and then selecting "Delete event/attribute." Since I have 500 entries to be removed, is there a quicker way of doing this? Preferably all at once. :-) Bea

There is still the little chequered triangle, but the picture doesn't show up when that person is in LH position. Sometimes not even when I click on the camera logo. And there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it!!!Kind regardsJoy
