Thanks for that Cheryl , glad I asked now I tried as you suggested but seemingly got one database at a time , however I tried cascade and that brought up the two, then Tile Vertically showed the two I was not aware you could do this so it was worth asking about Is there any danger of corruption in either files? Hi Cheryl I am not the OP (plainly :-) but how do you open two PAF files as the same time? If I open one and then attempt to open a second it shuts the first one Just wondering ? Earl, I find that a clipboard expander saves me a lot of effort. The software actually adds a new and expanded clipboard. When you install the software, ask it to always run on startup. Then, by default it remembers the 25 most recent items copied to the Windows clipboard. These can be text, images (including screen shots), files, folders, etc. To paste from the ClipX clipboard, the defaut setting is Shift+Crtl+v (Ctrl+v still pastes from the Windows clipboard). Pressing Shift+Crtl+v pops up ClipX, and you can paste any of the 25 most recent items anywhere that accepts that kind of data. For example, if you want to copy a person's data from PAF to nFS: In PAF's Edit Individual screen, copy the name, birth date, birth place, death date, death place, and notes to the Windows clipboard (Windows will forget but ClipX will not). Then switch to nFS and paste the copied items, one after another from the ClipX clipboard. Very handy. I used it constantly when serving in World Wide Support. 1. Open any PAF database 1a USE FULL_SCREEN 2. Click on WINDOW at the top of the PAF screen 2a I find Tile Vertically works best for me 3. resize by grab'n'drag the screen 4. open second db, and resize so you can see both at once. If you're using anything other than a full-screen view, you'll have trouble seeing both windows. I would follow Fred and Bill's recommendation with an export to a GED file and then an import the other database. They should import with the highest RIN numbers unless you have deleted others recently -- so easy to find. Then link them to the desired folks (handy to have the RIN numbers available when doing the linking). In the future, don't click on the database. Instead just open PAF5. It should open to the last database in use. It is not a bad idea to check the database name at the top of the screen to be sure. > Yes, I've done it again. Yes, I've done it again. I am not a newbie to genealogy, I just never have had a handle on the different files in the PAF program. So therefore, I try and watch very closely Every time I back up it makes a new file. If I inadvertently click on the short cut to PAF that's on my desktop, I expect it to be the file I'm working in. Carol, If you have PAF Insight or Family Insight, you can use the Compare and Synch function to open both files and copy those 9 people to the other database. If you don't have these products, you can export the records from the PAF file in a gedcom file. You can select them using either the Relationship Filters or use the Advanced Focus Filter to select the 9 highest RINs. Then import the gedcom into the other file and merge or link to attach them to the family. A third alternative is a free clipboard expander. I use ClipX. www.bluemars.org/clipx That way the clipboard can hold 25 items at a time, which can then be pasted in the order of my choice. It sure beats copying and pasting one thing at a time! You ask about problems with Windows 7, not being compatible with older programs, ie. PAF5. To make Windows 7 or Vista, run with older programs you need to enable the Compatible Wizard feature. 1) Click on: Start 2) Click on: Help and Support 3) Type in: Compatibility Wizard and select 4) Click on: installing programs: frequently asked questions 5) Click on: can I install a program made for an earlier version of Windows? 6) Click on: Make older programs run in this version of Windows 7) Click on: Click to open the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. Follow the instructions and you will need to tell it to be compatible with Windows XP or other. This must be done for each separate program that you are having problems with. If you have further questions don't hesitate to ask me, because I have found it solves my problems, except ONE involving the Laptop features. I have Windows 7 on a LapTop that is equipped with a tapping device located to the front of the keys, in place of the external mouse. Whenever I input some data my hand continually touches this tapping device causing errors in the data, so I have to turn this device off and use an external mouse. Which is fine until I turn off my computer and Windows 7 automatically turns on the tapping device when I open up. It is terrible to get old. OK I understand what you mean now re soc etc (aka the arguers corner :-) As far as separate lists are concerned, I think there is a place for each but there is also a place for the more general lists like Roots Lists in general have declined, in some cases to the point of non existence, some have not had posts for months if not years The main factors to my mind are the plethora of information now available online, inconceivable a short time ago, so people can find much more for themselves than was the case And the many ways that people now communicate, Skype, facebook, twitter etc etc So the interesting posts are shared out far wider these days Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS I sussed the POV before you gave the answer but have never come across the TYG > Back the day after dirt was invented?, there was one very > large genealogy group on usenet (Roots as I recall). Hi Cheryl Could you decipher that please <vbg> What do you mean by "split groups" ? POV ? TYG ? I think you will find that most Admins are not overly keen on test messages, as it takes the same effort and the effect is the same its always better to post an enquiry if only a repeat of a previous one, test messages do nothing of use Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > I remember one morning having 400 in just one group ... then > it split apart and the total of the split groups dropped to > 100 -- thus proving that we'd all have fewer messages to > read if we split. Back the day after dirt was invented?, there was one very large genealogy group on usenet (Roots as I recall). It became unwieldy for those not in the US who were paying by the message or by the minute, and it proceeded to subdivide into many smaller groups now known as the soc.genealogy.whatever hierarchy which covers soc.genealogy.british soc.genealogy.medieval soc.genealogy.computing s.g.methods and numerous others, all with an attached mail-list. So, if you're only interested in South African genealogy (think Johannesburg or Desmond Tutu), you can sub to that one and ignore the rest of the world. I think you miss an awful lot of learning opportunities that way, though. Nivard Ovington wrote: > Hi Cheryl > > Could you decipher that please<vbg> > > What do you mean by "split groups" ? > > POV ?
