Nivard, follow these steps: Open the PAF data file you want to use. Click on "search" in the top menu line. In the drop down menu click on advanced focus filter In the find individual menu select all in the relationship filter box. Click on the select button. They should now all have a chevron in front of their names. Under field filter click on define. Select birth Place. In the next window select matches and enter the place name. Click OK. Click OK. Put a check in the show results only box. All of the individuals in your data file born in that place should now show. Click on the save button and give it a name. You can then retrieve this list by clicking on the retrieve button If you want to print them out in a report you need to create the report first. -----Original Message----- From: Nivard Ovington <ovington1@sky.com> To: paf-5-users@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, Nov 8, 2010 6:22 am Subject: [PAF-5] Simple report for a birthplace Hi all Although I have used PAF for quite a time and have used the preset reports ith it and PAF companion I have used the user defined reports very much Some work with no problem but one is causing me grief I want a simple report that I can search all persons in my database for a iven birth place Could someone give me the steps please Any help appreciated Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) ------------------------------ o unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PAF-5-USERS-request@rootsweb.com ith the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of he message
Kathy, The problem you are having may not be due to PAF errors. I have run into two problems which were my own doings. 1) When I open the Actual Text portion of Notes, anything already in it, is highlighted. If I strike any alphabet key, number, or hit the space bar BEFORE I clear the highlight, everything will vanish. If this happens exit by hitting Cancel NOT Save. I can then reopen the file and everything is back in place. 2) Another way I have lost what I have just typed in is to hit the wrong Windows shortcut key combination. We use Ctrl-V to past things into Notes, but there are a lot of other Ctrl-combos. A couple of times I hit one (not sure which one) and it closed me out of Notes. It asked if I wanted to same my work, so I said yes. I lost what I was working on. Just something to consider. Bea
Check/Repair works best if it finds an error? Stuff I /know/ I copied into the NOTES simply vanished...pages of it. Unfortunately, I didn't know that for several weeks after I put it in, when I went back to pull something out of it. :( If you figure out what's happening, please share. Like you, some of my missing material was copy'n'pasted from a webpage; some was plain-text copied from a webpage; some of keyed in by hand. I couldn't find a common denominator to what was missing, and several people assured me that I was having sequential, senior-moments with deja-vu. (g) Cheryl
FamilyInsight is the safest option for correcting problems with notes. When loading your file it automatically detects problems like the one you are experiencing. It will give you a report with the details in a more human readable form than PAF provides. Any corrective action it takes is listed in that report so you can verify that the problem was fixed correctly. There are cases where it is impossible for the software to tell which fix is correct, so having an understandable report is critical. But, if you do use export/inport/new name file, you will probably "lose" the relevant information FamilyInsight saves about synced people in your file, and possibly matches..So consider that... The GEDCOM export/import is a variation -- it can fix some things that Check/Fix cannot solve (but check/repair fixes some things that GEDCOM export/import just throws away). I would always try Check/Fix first, and if that can't fix it, then I'd try GEDCOM. You might try two other tools. PAF's notes are straight text. Formatting codes are interpreted as text, so I wouldn't expect that to be the problem. Missing people and missing notes sometimes result from using two different versions of the same database, but you would probably have noticed that. Your problem could come from a corrupted copy of the software. If so, Removing and Installing the software would solve the problem. I think, though, that some of the codes used in certain databases online may not be text. I have found that if I do want to cut and paste something directly from the net, if I paste it into Notepad first, then into PAF, then I don't get as many errors. I was worried about the software, but I was afraid to reinstall it. Thanks. K

When my PAF file develops problems like that, I export All, create a new PAF file with a different name and import the gedcom. That way you get off to a fresh start with all new pointers. The old file can be kept as a backup. That's what I've been doing, but I was told that by doing that I might be messing the notes up. So far, I haven't found any notes messed up, but I keep wondering why this is happening so often now. I also wonder if it could have anything to do with cut and paste - say if you cut and paste from something on the internet, could there be some code used on some internet sites that is not compatible with PAF's note structure. As it is, I found out yesterday that a bunch of newspaper extracts that I had typed up into my notes have all disappeared. Thanks. Kathy
I find that I'm having to run check file on my PAF file just about every time I add new notes, otherwise I get pointer errors in the notes, and it's beginning to bug me. I can't figure out this is happening - I keep wondering if the note files are too big, or if something is being inserted in the notes without my knowing it. Does anyone know could be causing this?? Thanks. Kathy

Bill, Fred and all the others, thank you for the responses. We had a pretty bad electrical storm here and I'm just back on line, and have succeeded in doing the gedcom route. It successfully entered the 9 people from the gedcom into the file I work in. And yes, I will always remember this lesson and not repeat it....hmmmm. Thanks Cheryl Thats all I needed to know Again if you don't ask you don't get to know do you <g> Its not often I have needed the facility of two files open at the same time but it would have saved a tremendous amount of work if I had known then it could be done It should come in very useful We learn something new everyday they say :-) Having used PAF for quite some time I wonder what else its capable of that I haven't found yet I will take a gander at the tutorials again Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Do you prefer Schroedinger or Hisenberg? Does anyone know how to go about changing wrong information? I have found some relatives on Family search that have been sealed to the wrong person. How do we get this sealing changed in SL?
(G) Yeah, that's what I said when someone demonstrated it to me! Pass it on. Don't bother with support. With rare exceptions (temple work done on living people, etc) what is already done cannot be "changed". What can be done is get the correct information entered into the system and seal them to the correct people.
