Forest is a very old PAF program that used data from PAF-2 and created a list of all your family "trees" in your PAF Data. Cheryl, I remember that old PAF utility program. FamilyInsight or PAF Insight will do this. It calls them pedigrees, but in any case it shows the separate family trees in a PAF file. It also allows you to do better merges and to compare and synch 2 different PAF files. -- Bill Buchanan website: http://billbuchanan.byethost17.com blog: http://billbuchanan.blogspot.com On Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 5:03 PM, Don Boudreaux <donboudreaux@earthlink.net>wrote: > Forest is a very old PAF program that used data from PAF-2 > and created a list of all your family "trees" in your PAF Data. > > Don Boudreaux > > > singhals wrote: > > For those of you who haven't a clue what it is, hit NEXT now. > > > > For those of you who /do/ know what I mean ... did anyone > > ever figure a work-around to get this out of PAF5? Thanks for the response. I only tried attaching an image to one name and did a mini web page selection to see if, or where it might print. Nothing showed up. The sourse only showed the written portion, no image. The image attached to a sourse, would make it easier to double check the data found in certificates. So, maybe double linking might be useful, since only one copy will be shown. I will have to think that idea over. If that's not what you're doing, my guess is the answer is No, there isn't a way, and you can probably put them in the scrapbook. Cheryl

If you're learning things that aren't exciting (a new phone number, the newest detour on West 17th, a new health regime) it's hard to work up enthusiasm. And, if being excited about learning separates youth and age, it's the wrong division -- IME, the older you get the more excited you are to be able to learn something. Well, well, well. That was simple enough. Thank you all for answering and for your patience. M.A. Causey
One additional point. To open the second PAF file, use the File menu > Open. (Double-clicking the second file doesn't work. I find the Indoividiual list view works well fore compariong files. Don't know what version you are using but in PAF 5 it's un der the "Windows" tab on the top of your screen and then select "Tile vertically" For your second comment, see below......... :-) -- Sincerely Peter familyrecordfinder.com/ The excitement of learning separates youth from old age. Did you backup the database? If so, then go through your list of additions (the *.pal file as I recall) to see what you added since the update. Collect that information, possibly be a GEDCOM file, and then restore the backup. Reenter the newer data and you should be able to use the full system again with the sources. I usually attach images to the main tab on the individual screen and it shows up in the Scrapbook, when I make web pages. If I attach the images to an event (birth, death, etc.) they are not in the scrapbook when a web page is made. Is there a way to make them show up somewhere? Bea
Yes, I have a backup disk. I plan to use FamilyInsight to compare the two data bases and update the earlier one. However, I was interested in finding out whether anyone else had encountered this problem. ----- Original Message ----- From: <wadavis@vt.edu> To: <paf-5-users@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 25, 2010 11:18 AM Subject: Re: [PAF-5] Disappearing sources > Did you backup the database? I have about 12,000 names in my PAF database. I have just discovered that all of my sources have disappeared, both the ones that I used for events and the individual sources such as census records. The only ones that remain are the ones for the temple ordinances. The list of sources is still there, however. I did find a thread from 2001 which discussed this but nothing since then. Has anyone else had any experience with this problem?
I have been thinking that it has been a problem with the notes that I've been having problems with, but today when I ran a check file, and then check/repair, I noticed what it's doing. After it starts running, as soon as it says it is checking notes, I get 1 error - which I assume means an error in something I've done since I last backed the program up. BUT, if I run a check/repair, the error shows up as this. (This is the third time in two weeks that I've gotten this error). Checking Individual Names: 39939 records. Record pointer 55308226 is not the first free. So, why does it show up as an error when running check in notes, but when running check/repair, does it come up under individual names. When you run check/repair, it will tell you that it is fixed, but if you run check again right after, you get another record pointer error. I keep wondering if I have too many notes or too many people - I have 37,300 people in my database. Thanks. Kathy
Kathy: A message like, "Record pointer xx is not the first free" in the Individual section would usually mean that the list of deleted individuals has a problem. I wonder if PAF's check/fix on your particular note error is clobbering part of the list of deleted individuals. I've seen folks with much larger databases. I don't think that the problem is with the 37,000+ names in your file. If you were to run the Database Check/Repair on your file in Ancestral Quest (which will do a check/repair on a PAF file), and you get the same problems, I'd like you to let me know privately about it (gfindlay@ancquest.com), as we can probably get AQ to properly handle this situation, and get your file repaired. Elizabeth, I sometimes view two files in PAF so that I can compare them. (The second file needs to be opened using File menu > Open.) Then I click Windows > Tile vertically. From the Family view you can easily read the Marriage notes from both files. If one file is made Read-only it prevents updating the wrong one. -- Bill Buchanan website: http://billbuchanan.byethost17.com blog: http://billbuchanan.blogspot.com On Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 4:08 AM, Stan & Elizabeth Warwick < ewarwick@pei.sympatico.ca> wrote: > Sometimes, when I need to check my typing (old eyes :-(), I open the > file in PAF, then open the same file in another program and use > ALT+TAB to switch between them. Sometimes, when I need to check my typing (old eyes :-(), I open the file in PAF, then open the same file in another program and use ALT+TAB to switch between them. Having 2 copies open at once means that you can edit while displaying your information in the background file. My background favorites are Ancestral Quest or PAFWhiz 2 because they have a "Read-Only" mode that makes changes as I change the PAF database. Currently I am checking information for a GEDCOM file for export. I go to the same person in both files and check my marriage notes by going to AQ or PAFWhiz and clicking on the Individual tab to see all the information for that person. My GEDCOM will not contain confidential information, to check this I go to AQ or PAFWhiz click on MENU -> File -> Reports and Charts, select "Individual summary", fill in the check boxes as I wish (leaving Conf. Notes etc. unchecked) and click on Preview to display my output. Sadly this view doesn't include Marriage Notes - that's why the first step is necessary. AQ or PAFWhiz also have ways to check sources: MENU -> Edit -> Source List, select a source and click on Citations to display the RIN and name for each citation, then I use PAF to make my edits. Hope this helps. Elizabeth Warwick
