    3. Regarding scanning large objects. I recently had a local architectural copy service scan 3600+ court house documents. They did it on a large format photocopying machine. They scanned the documents that could be loaded into the auto feed mechanism for one cent each. If the document was in poor condition as some of them were and therefore might be damaged by loading them in this manner, the charge was merely an hourly fee for the time it took the worker to hand place them on the glass. They saved them to my thumb drive from their server. We had all of those documents scanned to PDF for about $80. For anyone who wishes additional details about this project, please contact me off list, Ellen

    3. My two cents: I don't think there is much demand for large scans. How many people actually have large documents (larger than US Letter) of any type? The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a newspaper page; and 11x17 wouldn't cover that. For several years I had a scanner that would do (US) legal size. I don't recall ever scanning anything that size. 99% of my scans are of photographs, usually around 5x7 or smaller. I think of the "resolution of a regular scanner" as being either 300dpi or 600dpi. This is more than adequate for just about any document. A 24bit color scan at 600dpi of a 4x6 photo can easily be over 50MB. In the back of my mind is the notion that if I really needed a large document scanned that I could get it done at one of the local copy places (Kinkos maybe?), but I've never tried it. Never the less, if I had the opportunity to get a large scanner at a very reasonable price,ie, free; I'd take it. 3. Hi Lorin It sounds roughly A3 in size , many places have facility for that sized copies and last I used same it was only about .20p a copy Taking toner and paper into account I do not see a great profit potential, particularly as most machines like a service now and then and should it breaks down it may be a write off A lot depends on the facilities in your area of course If you were considering doing it by return post I would say its a no go, postage and security would put most off I would have thought I rarely scan anything these days, preferring to take a digital photo instead, much quicker and easier Sorry to be negative Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >> Flat objects up to 11" x 17". 3. Having had exceptional success taking digital photos of large objects (photos, baptismal certificates) I have to say I doubt there's much interest. The very high resolution may be a plus--but then there has to be a way to print the document/photo in the original size. 1. [PAF-5] Need help fixing PAF file
    2. Shaun M. O'Hara
    3. I ran the check file program in PAF and I got the following errors. File Check/Repair Report Checking Notes: 16114 records. The next pointer record does not point back to this record (13143). Checking Individuals: 6635 records. Individual 5983 Notes 13305 note previous pointer should be 13143 but is 10750. Individual 5983 Notes note pointer 13305 pointing to wrong owner (5506). Individual 5983 Notes note pointer 13515 pointing to wrong owner (5506). Individual 5983 Notes note pointer 13516 pointing to wrong owner (5506). Individual 5983 Notes note pointer 13517 pointing to wrong owner (5506). I tried to correct the notes for each of the two people but that didn't solve the problem and PAF keeps reverting to the same errors. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? It appears these errors have been in my PAF file for a very long time. I thought about deleting the two people and then re-entering them but I wanted to get some advice before I start making things worse. Thanks, Shaun

Given that most in-home scanners can't even scan a legal size document, I'd think there's a potential market. OTOH, it would involve trusting my document to a shipping service (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL, Uncle Fred's Carrier Pigeon, Undine's Unicorn, whatever) and a whole lot us aren't _quite_ that trusting. You may have a better feel for how many ARE that trusting (g), and of course pricing will pay a role -- if it costs me $5 to mail it to you for scanning, and you charge me anything at all for the scan and $5 to mail the document back to me, I'm in for $10, plus the time it'll take me to d/l the image. If you send me a CD with the image as well as return the document, the mailing costs went up to $7 or so ... how many people have documents or photos valuable enough to make it worth it? (Can you tell I had to mail something recently? Turns out, it would have been cheaper and faster to drive the 75 miles each way to hand deliver it.)

    1. Re: [PAF-5] Need help fixing PAF file
    2. John Vilburn
    3. Shaun, The problem with misdirected notes pointers is caused by a bug in PAF. Using the Repair option of PAF's Check/Repair is likely to cause the loss of some notes data. The best way to fix this problem is to load the file into FamilyInsight. FamilyInsight will automatically detect the problem and repair it. Because FamilyInsight tries to repair the problem as safely as possible, you should look at the report it produces. For instance, if FamilyInsight sees that one person is claiming the notes record, but the notes record says it is owned by a different person, FamilyInsight will attach the notes to both persons and tell you in the report to go look at both persons to determine which person the notes really belong to. You can then go and edit to leave the notes only on the person they belong to. Aloha, John On Jan 5, 2011, at 11:40 AM, Shaun M. 2. Restore loads the data into the same name PAF file as the restore name (fileXYZ.zip will give fileXYZ.PAF). If you save to a different name, then it will not overwrite your data. If it is the same name, then it overwrites your database. Many folks do database backups with the date included in the name. That is the safe way to do it. If you want to restore to the same file name as the original, then you need to change the name of the backup file. 2. You have to select the properties on the file (right click) and uncheck read-only. On the CD there is nothing that can be done since they are read only, but once copied you can fix it. It is better to use a memory stick or actually to backup and move the ZIP file. You could then open the zip file with the restore in PAF to create the PAF file.
