    1. [PAF-5] lost names returned
    2. Some of you may remember my question of several days ago when, after importing a gedcom and merging it into my Ethel file, I seem to have lost a whole bunch of names that had previously been in my Ethel file. I got suggestions & helps from several of you but before I had a chance to put them to work, I finished doing a match/murge on 11 pages of "possible duplicate individuals" that were in the gedcom & my Ethel file And no, none of the previously missing people were on that list. but just as those names had mysteriously disappeared they mysteriously reappeared! And no, I hadn't been drinking or dreaming; was quite lucid all times. I don't expect an explanation, just rejoice with me! Ethel in Nebraska In a message dated 2/18/2011 12:18:29 P.M. 2. If you have the typical installation, then select Start>Programs>FamilySearch>PAF and start PAF5. It should open with the last file you were using unless you closed that file before quiting PAF5. In any case, you can then select File>Open and select the appropriate PAF file. I would not delete the download, but keep it in case you decide to reinstall. It is always a good idea to keep copies of program files you install for future use. So you might already have the file on your system some place else (that is why it is a good idea to use the default download folder in Windows or oen you create to do the same thing). Before reinstalling, I would suggest you go to the START>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs (or Programs and Features in VISTA and Win7) and select remove/change of PAF5. When it opens up select English (or the language you desire) and then a repair and that should fix your issues. If you get nothing with the icon select, you might try to use the right button on the icon (I am assuming this is a PAF file -- I never use this method of opening my PAF files) and select Open With, then select PAF5. 3. If something has damaged the PAF software installed on your computer, the simplest thing is to uninstall/remove it, then install PAF again from the download. (Your Windows Security may not be able to verify the source of the download, but YOU know where you downloaded it from, right?) Removing the PAF software will not remove your PAF data files. Once PAF is reinstalled, everything should work normally again. 3. The two Bills gave you the corrrect advice. Do NOT delete the PAF5EnglishSetup.exe file. In fact, burn it to a CD or save it on a flash drive in case you ever need to reinstall, change computers, etc. Follow these steps (a repeat of their advice, just put in cookbook fashion): 1. START>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs (or Programs and Features in VISTA and Win7) and uninstall PAF 5 (I would prefer a full uninstall rather than a repair) 2. Reboot the computer. 3. Run that PAF5EnglishSetup file. Ignore those security warnings. They are coming because it is a downloaded file and are intended to warn people when something bogus is happening, but it is confusing because they also pop up with legitimate programs. You know you downloaded the file and it is from a reputable source so you can approve and run the file with no worries. 3. Hi everyone, I am helping a niece in NZ with her research and thought it would be a good idea to download another Paf file onto my computer to fill in her tree. I have the new one downloaded but not installed yet, because I must have done something stupid in the process as now I can't open my own Paf file (or any back-up dvd's either). Have I somehow uninstalled the original PAF program? Is the new download overruling my own records? I am hesitant to continue on the installation of the new download as I no longer feel confident about what I need to do. My old version of PAF is 5.0 and I think the new one is the same. I am using Windows XP. If anyone can help solve my problem or suggest where I can go (apart from to a Mental Asylum thinking I have lost many years of work), I would very much appreciate some help. Marg? Maybe it's my bad-brain week, but it sounds as if you d/l the program just so you could open a new set of people? If you did that, you really really didn't need to. You can create a separate file for your niece's stuff, by clicking FILE/NEW and giving it a name like Niece1. Other than that, I would agree that when you re-installed PAF, it probably overwrote all your old preferences, such as where to look for your file. Open PAF, close whatever database opens, which ought to get you to a post-card-sized box in the middle of the window with assorted options. Pick FIND and OK and it'll find all the .paf files on your system. [ or, open Windows Explorer and tell IT to find all files with .paf in the name. Cheryl

    1. [PAF-5] combining pictures or document scans

    3. I wanted to capture a large family photo of gggrampa's family. The framed photo was big enough that when I took it out of the frame my scanner could scan only part of it. I did 4 scans, 1 from each corner, and then a 5th scan along one side just to tie it all together and fed the 5 jpeg files into a program called 'autostich' and it automatically recognized how the several images overlapped and stitched them all together to produce on image file that combined all of the image. http://www.photo-freeware.net/autostitch.php ( noted an advertising link to another product that claims to do about the same thing. And they have a free version too.)

    3. John, what happens when you start the program from the Start menu? Start > Programs > FamilySearch > PAF 5 Same thing or different? If it installated correctly, that photo should be replaced in a few seconds with a large menu, where you can click on Cancel to enter the program. If this does not happen uninstall PAF and install it again. 1. Re: [PAF-5] lost Paf
    2. Marg, Don't panic. You should not need more than one copy of the PAF program files on your computer. The latest version of PAF is 5.2.18. Downoanding and installing an updated copy of the PAF program should not impact your data files. They are probably still on your computer. If I understand right what you want to do is to have more than one data file. Yours and your neices. A data file is different that the program files. What I suppect happened is that you did not set your preferences the same in the new downloaded program as they were in your old program. Click on tools. Click on preferences, Click on folders. The top line should list the location of your data files. Make this entry the same in your new program as it was in your old program. You should then be able to open your data file. To read about preferences start PAF, click on help in the top menu line and click on user's guide. When it opens scroll down the menu on the left side until you see preferences. Click on that and read up on to do it. To use more than one data file just make sure they have different names. Good luck Lynn -----Original Message----- From: Marg & Neil Andrews <margay@tadaust.org.au> To: PAF-5-USERS@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, Feb 17, 2011 5:56 am Subject: [PAF-5] lost Paf Hi everyone, am helping a niece in NZ with her research and thought it would be a good idea o download nother Paf file onto my computer to fill in her tree. 3. *AT A GUESS* and it is only a guess -- the Ethel file you opened was an earlier version of the Ethel file you wanted. This would explain why data you thought was there isn't. I just discovered that I've got one PAF filename with a space in it "His name.paf", and a second one "Hisname.paf". No clue how that happened or why. I just know it caused me grief last week when I opened Hisname but needed His name. :( Yes, when you add people from one database into another, the RINs of those people change. The RIN is nothing more than a sequence marker for who you added /to THIS database/ first.
