    3. When I try to look at the actual documents, it changes my login name to NULL and won't let me see it. When I hit the BACK button, NULL changes back to my username. I emailed with Family Search and they said it was because I was using the BETA site and gave me a URL to use that was exactly what I was using. Any suggestions? Don Rubarts

    3. Joan, I believe that the member submissions have been removed from Historical Records. Also "EASy" should be limited to extracted records. I tried a little test just now that seems to support this. I submitted my grandfather's name and he does not appear in Historical Records, just in Family Trees (I also submitted him to AF). -- Bill Buchanan website: http://billbuchanan.byethost17.com blog: http://billbuchanan.blogspot.com On Mon, Apr 11, 2011 at 4:49 PM, Joan Lowrey <joanlowr@pacbell.net> wrote: > Bill, > > How can one tell if the information is from member submission, as > opposed to extraction? > > Joan Lowrey > > At 01:46 PM 4/11/2011, you wrote: > >Ethel, > > > >Yes, it is. 3. I agree that the new version of Family search is hopeless. I love the fact that there are records there that you can download, actual copies of the records etc. But it is so hard to narrow the search down to anything useful. It takes soooo much time wading through everything. The whole thing is SOOOO slow. I just hope things improve. I loved the original beta version, but not this one. 3. Hello Nivard, Yes. First you open your database in PAF. Then, under Tools you select Ancestral Quest. That opens the same database in AQ. You make whatever changes or additions you wish to make within AQ, then you close AQ. Closing AQ brings up the same database (with your new changes) in PAF. You will actually see PAF on the quick launch bar at the bottom -- it appears to still be open. However you cannot return to PAF until you close AQ. If you click on the link to PAF at the bottom, it opens PAF with an empty data screen. Changing data in this manner within PAF but using AQ for the changes does not change the format of the database from a PAF file. There are options within AQ to save the data in AQ format, but once you do that you cannot reopen it in PAF without using a gedcom file. I hope this is helpful. I've no idea if AQbasic will open a PAF file since I have the paid version of AQ. You can certainly download AQ Basic, load it onto your computer, and then open your PAF file to see if AQ is an option from within PAF. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Ancestral Quest
    2. Ellen, You said that very well. One thing though. In your paragrapph two you said you have to use a GEDCOM file to go from an AQ file back to a PAF file. I don't think that is correct. Click on file and then click on file converter. That will let you convert the AQ file to a PAF file without using a GEDCOM. If you want the new PAF file to be separate from your original PAF file give it a different name. I'm like you and use a purchased copy of AQ so there may be some differences in the free basic version. 2. After the select and going back to the export screen, what is the number of individuals listed for the export? If there is no one selected, then you would not get a file. Same suggestion as already suggested, but with a check to be sure. You might also try a full export as a trial also. Even if some Windows version does not run PAF directly, if you save your XP, Vista or W7 installation disks you can install that using a virtual machine. Have been using AQ for many years, but not as long as I have used PAF, nearly 25 years. My 9 different databases for my ONS (One Name Study), one for most geographical areas of the world, are in PAF5 and all data, over 100,000 records, is stored in PAF5. Use AQ for some specific functions, the most important is to sort one of the databases when looking for a specific person, ie. Charles Cotton of a specific area, a specific time frame and who was mar to a specific person. Since there are many Cottons with the given name of Charles, maybe over 1000, it is very hard to find him using PAF. When I was forced to start using Windows Vista and later Windows 7, someone warned me to modify Windows by using the Wizard feature that comes with it. PAF5 then worked very well and still does. I also use Roots Magic but only to create large or small Wall charts, up to 20 ft long, and it also works very well on Windows 7. In such cases the data is imported from PAF5 data using a GEDCOM file. Recently decided to try out an IMac to see if my PAF5 program would work on it. It does, but one needs to also install Windows 7 with the Wizard, and have not yet found any problems, though it is new to me. I certainly don't intend to leave PAF5 and therefore have downloaded the ENG File off the Internet, saving it in condensed format on a Flash Drive for future use, in case the LDS removes it from their WebSite. Lila Just which version of Windows won't handle PAF? I have PAF 5.2 running on both our computers.... one computer on XP and the other computer on Win7 I have also have PAF installed and RUNNING on my laptop which uses Vista. I also use AQ v12.1.27 and after using it for some time now I find that I use it in preference to PAF. I have used PAF in it's various forms for about 25 years now but AQ gets the nod for all round performance. What I do like about AQ is that it interfaces smoothly with PAF without hiccups. Data integrity is maintained. Alterations and additions to data in either program on the same computer were automatically updated in the other. After importing Gedcoms I use Family Insight to do the 'match and merge' as this allows me far more control matching data and eliminating the need to edit out duplication of notes and marriages etc. that happen in PAF's merge. Don't get me wrong. PAF does do some things better, but not enough for it to be my primary program. Which is why I run the two programs in parallel for those occasions that I need those options. And yes, AQ is worth shelling out for. BTY, the cost is peanuts compared to the likes of Family Tree Maker which has more versions than the continuing story of Rocky Balboa. 3. Allow me to put my 2 cents worth in, on this subject. I'm dedicated to AQ, Roost Magic and PAF5 as each has its use.
