Bob, With Windows7 you just need the latest version of PAF Companion. You can get it here. http://progenygenealogy.com/Downloads/PAFCompanionDownload.aspx The older versions of PAF Companion have problems with 64-bit Windows7. (Some of the knowledgebase documents used by FamilySearch support are for older versions and only add to the confusion. The suggestion to switch to Adobe Reader 7 is an example of misinformation. It is not a solution to your problem.) If you have PAF Companion version 5.2 or higher your unlock codes will work with the latest version. Since you indicate that you are using Windows 7 I hope you have changed the setup to use the Wizard so that Windows version thinks it is using an earlier version of Windows ie. XP, to run PAF. Hi Elaine Just to be perfectly clear, I am very grateful for access to the vast amount of records made available by the LDS and the various databases are an excellent resource separately My gripe is with the newfamilysearch site, the search engine has it appears been designed by a three year old with no idea of what they would require from a database, it has such potential yet is defeated by the search engine It has improved since its inception but has such a long way to go to be usable If you search for someone specifically in England, you do not want two thousand times the data for everyone in the USA, Canada and anywhere else you get results for and why do we need five to ten hits for the same record? I know the IGI is outdated and cannot carry the volume much less the type of records becoming available but a more sensible search mechanism is needed than the throw a dart at method we have presently It is as useless as new search on Ancestry Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I have found that in most cases the way to get usable results is to do a search within specific > records rather than the person's name (even with dates and location) in the general search engine > (Texas Deaths, then "John Smith", for example). Thanks Don It does sound rather like the later paid version of AQ Thanks for getting back to me much appreciated Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Nivard, > > Not a terrific amount, but there is a box showing the BMD events for the > highlighted person and a button for the Marriage record of the > highlighted person. Nivard, Not a terrific amount, but there is a box showing the BMD events for the highlighted person and a button for the Marriage record of the highlighted person. There are additional buttons to add a spouse, order spouses, and order children. I believe that there are different reports available too. There are 4 tabs across the top, the extra tab being like an individual summary. Don. Hi Nivard, I've been lurking, and watching this thread to see what came of it. I use PAF, or at least I did until I got into a testing of PAFWIZ which I now use all the time. No change to databases, they open in PAF or PAFWIZ equally. There are a few twiddly bits in PAFWIZ which are not in PAF which works for me. Unfortunately, PAFWIZ is no longer supported, but like PAF is no longer supported, I will keep using it. I do have the free copy of AQ, but rarely use it. I also use Brother's Keeper, but only for printing a drop line chart as it sets the information out the way I want to see it. Again, it is only the free version. Anyway, that's my 2 pennorth. Thanks for the response Ross I did think that may be the reason I don't think any of us like to change do we :-) As to receiving two copies of any mail? If you check the archives and there is only one copy there the problem is on your receiving end This is usually down to your ISP or set up and is more often than not the download being interrupted before its finished so it downloads a second time , it happens more with dial up than broadband These duplications happen from time to time and usually stop as suddenly as they start Of late there has been a problem with SORBs the spam filters Rootsweb uses, they are rejecting an awful lot of posts, yesterday I had to send seven times before it got through, not sure if thats a factor here Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Nivard asks "Any ideas why they or you don't use AQ all the time" > > I have used PAF for many years and am comfortable with it. Nivard, I agree with you totally. I am very grateful for the new documents and records available. I appreciate all the hours, days, weeks and months of work that went into getting them ready. The search engine is the BIG problem. I live in hopes that it will be improved upon. I have found that in most cases the way to get usable results is to do a search within specific records rather than the person's name (even with dates and location) in the general search engine (Texas Deaths, then "John Smith", for example). I still get a little frustrated when I also get "Smithington" though alternate spellings like "Smithe" and "Smyth" can be useful. Hi Ross Thanks for yours on the subject A few people have said they use PAF and AQ on occasion to do this or that which leaves me wondering why they don't use AQ all the time Any ideas why they or you don't use AQ all the time ? Hi Ellen Many thanks for your reply I have tried the basic AQ and apart from looking a little more modern it does not appear to add much to PAF A couple of the extras I was interested in were the research log side, ie Research Manager & the to do list Do you use that and is it usable ? There is mention of an "individual" screen (a tab in the main view page), but on checking that it shows its only part of the paid version, I have watched the tutorial video and don't see mention of it , is it any different to the usual individuals edit screen? I just wondered why the tab doesn't work unless its different in some way? There are one or two interesting things with AQ so am debating if its worth the paid the version or not Any other good things you find with AQ not available in PAF ? Definitely not useless. I've been able to add a couple more generations to my ancestors still in Europe. And yes I could've just ordered the film at my local FHC but the last time I did that it was seven weeks before the film got there. Accessing the information from home plus it already being in digital form is a great benefit for me. And you can't beat free. One thing I have learned in the past couple of days is that their images are in grayscale, unlike HeritageQuest which has B&W images. This means that you can use software to manipulate things like contrast and threshold which can make an otherwise unreadable document useful. I do have a few criticisms though: The search forms seem to be unnecessarily limited and the search engines are attrocious. Please let me look for people in a particular Oklahoma county who were born in Alabama during a certain time frame. Also, if I'm looking for JONESes in Oklahoma, why are you showing me SMITHs in Maine? Just as a general principle, one should be able to search on any field or combination of fields. But my real complaint is with the sources and citations. They just don't seem to give them. I don't think it's adequate to simply say a marriage record is from film #1234567. I would like to say film #1234567 of Jones County GA Marriage Book AA page 321. I would like to say where the original record can be found, even if that's not where I got the information. On some of their census records they do not have the image available. But again they don't give enough information to find the census record elsewhere. At least they should give the county! All just my humble opinion. Steve -- > From: "Nivard Ovington" <ovington1@sky.com> > I have given up with it as its all but useless
