You can use Paf 5 from your USB storage device if you want, pstart is the loader. If you search this archive paf-5 list then you will see loads of information on how this works. But if you download and run the paf program from scratch on C:\ then it won't work from the USB storage device. Some people have not been able to run paf on Win 7. Some have the notice come up not responding if you leave it long enough it will sort it's self out. If your son has just built a PC I'm sure he can sort out any problems, that may arise. I now want to transfer my PAF files from the thumb drive to my new computer, the C drive, and expect that this may be more complicated than copying the files from one thing to the other. I also know that I may encounter some other problems, since there is more than one file on my thumb drive related to PAF, and I do not know exactly which files I need to transfer and do not know, other than they are going into the C drive, exactly what to name the files, or where to put copy them to. I am thinking that maybe I can just download another fresh version of PAF5 on my new computer, and then transfer just the data from my thumb drive and not worry about transferring the PAF5 system or executive files (????). I was hoping that if I just download the fresh unused version of PAF5, I could then export or import the information in my tree from my thumbdrive to the C drive. All of this is making my head swim. Can someone give me some suggestions on the easiest or best way to do this without me losing any data? Thank you very much. (GBG) All the suggestions so far will work, but the easy one hasn't been mentioned: Call your son back and say, put PAF on this thing and make it work with these files, and I'll buy you a steak dinner. Seriously, in this case, d/l and install PAF, then simply COPY any file on your thumb that ends in .paf or .pal I'm running WIN 7, 32 bit, and PAF works as well as it did on the XP. Cheryl
Hi there. Firstly PAF is compatible with Windows 7. Personally I would download PAF onto your new pc.. Then.. if all goes ok you can put the thumb drive into a usb slot on your new pc and send them to documents.. this is what I usually do.. Then take the stick out and you should then be able to open your chosen (multiple) file on your new pc... from your documents folder. You can then later arrange your folders in there so that you can keep all your paf files in one folder inside the documents folder. Good luck Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen D. Thank you Bill and Esther. I have checked Properties on both PAF5 and AQ. Neither one has Read Only checked. But strangely each one has a dotted line box around those words. When I try to use my flash drive backup I receive this message: aqz is not a database compatible with this version of AQ. The same message is received if I try a PAF5 backup, except it says PAF instead of AQ. My present version is AQ12.1 Build 28. LaVerne
Stephen, I think you have a good grasp of what to do. (The order of the two steps is not important.) 1. Copy your PAF data files (they will normally have names ending in ".paf") from the flash drive to a folder of your choice on the hard drive. I copy them to Documents, other people create special folders for them. 2. Install PAF5 from http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp?page=home/welcome/simplePAFRegistration.asp or go to https://www.familysearch.org/ > click Go to previous site > click Download PAF, and follow through with the prompted steps. Windows7 will install PAF in its x86 folder used for most 32-bit software. On my Windows7 laptop, Windows7 does not automatically recognize the PAF data files as belonging to PAF. This means that I need to open them from within PAF's file menu, rather than double-clicking the data file's icon. I usually use a single large PAF file, so I leave it open when shutting down PAF and it automatically re-opens the next time I start PAF. Except for this quirk, my PAF works identically on Windows7 (64-bit) and Windows vista (32-bit) -- Bill Buchanan website: http://billbuchanan.byethost17.com blog: http://billbuchanan.blogspot.com On Sat, May 14, 2011 at 8:01 AM, Stephen D. LaVerne, Having backups that are "read-only" is not normally a problem. (It happens when you backup to a CDR, but not normally if you save it to re-writable media.) When you restore the backup to your hard disk, flash drive, or DropBox, the restored file should be a read-write file. So I am guessing that it is the restored data file that is read-only, preventing you from adding or editing data. In that case, close your PAF/AQ program and right-click on the data file's icon to bring up the file's Properties, and if there is a checkmark in the Read-only box, click in the box to remove the checkmark, then click OK. The data file should no longer be read-only. If you are using the same data file on your computer and your husband's computer, you might want to look at having DropBox installed on both computers and keeping your data file there. For me, it has been the solution to the problem of adding data at the FHC or archives without throwing my database at home into confusion. I love being able to update my PAF file from either computer, and from any location. I have had to train myself to close PAF and wait a minute when shutting off my computer for the night, to give DropBox a chance to save all of the latest changes. A 2 GB account is free from DropBox.com. You may never need to Restore another backup. DropBox will automatically keep your data file in sych across multiple computers and smart phones. My principle software is a PAF5, but I also use AQ and update when available. Before I install the latest AQ update I wish to backup my current file as suggested. I just tried to print a "book" of the descendants of "X" wherein one generation was marked "challenged" because there is no evidence available to prove/disprove that X really is X2's father. The book turned out to a single page, because X2 was simply omitted and everyone else descends from him. Uhhh -- is that /supposed/ to happen? Cheryl

IIRC, the printer options in both PAF and Companion are the system defaults, but you probably already knew that? Cheryl
Re: PAF Companion reports and Windows 7 Thanks to several of you for responding re: problems with Companion and charts and Windows 7. Cheryl noted that I needed Adobe or other pdf reader. I was using Adobe (version 9, I believe) that came with the computer, but still the Companion would not preview or print some of the charts. I Iooked for a way to specifiy programs and printers for Companion to use but could not find any way to solve the problem. I will try the other suggestsions that came from some of you as a result of my inquiry. An update for Adobe 9 came recently while I was on the computer and I clicked to install. The installation "failed", and I ended up with no Adobe program at all. Empty folders and no program. PDF-XChange free is a reader only. I may upgrade to the full version in order to create PDF documents. I am thinking of a family history document that combines Word, Excel, images and pdf files all in one document, and I thought that a pdf document might be the answer. In any event, the Companion still did not recognize the new PDF program I had and an attempt to preview or print some charts shut the Companion down. I had some correspondence with LDS about Windows 7 compatibility, and they recognized this problem but did not provide a certain cure. They suggested going back to an earlier version of Adobe, e.g. 7, rather than 9. I haven't done that, as described above. Thanks again. On Fri, Apr 15, 2011 at 3:00 AM, <paf-5-users-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hi Robert. Just in case you are not aware of it, you can have both the RIN and the Custom ID displayed in the Individuals list. It seems PAF requires the RIN in the Individuals List. I prefer the custom id field so I had added that and removed the RIN. When I added the RIN back everyone returned. Thanks for the suggestions. I was adding new people when something strange happened. I jumped to the Individuals tab to pick the next person to add new family. The list of individuals was empty. Everyone I've entered is still in there (as far as I can tell). I can go from person to person to get where I want. I just can't go to the individual list and get there directly. Can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out why the Individuals tab is empty and restore it? Robt C Parrish Sr, Administrator Genesis Project http://genesisprojectfh.net
Robert, Richard's solution usually works. If not, try right-clicking in the heading space and adding the missing fields back in. And if that doesn't work, uninstall/remove the PAF program and install it again. -- Bill Buchanan website: http://billbuchanan.byethost17.com blog: http://billbuchanan.blogspot.com On Fri, Apr 15, 2011 at 3:25 PM, Richard Rands <rrands@earthlink.net> wrote: > Usually when this happens, your individuals list has been > inadvertently dragged off the screen to the left. Usually when this happens, your individuals list has been inadvertently dragged off the screen to the left. Open the Individual List screen and place your mouse pointer over the left edge. If it turns into a double arrow, click the mouse button and drag it to the right. You should see it come back as you drag further to the right. Bob asked "How, I pray, does one do this?" I keep the following in my Instructions folder. Try it and I think it will solve your problem. If it doesn't work then let me know? "Compatibility problems with older programs a) in Vista - Using an older program that worked well with XP but doesn’t work well with Vista, by using the Compatibility Mode Wizard. This will recreate the Windows environment for which it was designed. - click on Desktop - press F1 - in the box type in Compatibility Wizard - open it to run and in the 3 options select “I want to choose from a list of programs”, - select the program and click Next. b) in Windows 7, select - Start - Help and Support - input “Compatibility” and Enter - Select 5. Make old programs run... - Click to open the desired program compatibility... - Next - Select the PAF 5 or other program - Next and follow instructions. c) in Windows 7 right click on Program File icon and choose trouble shoot compatibility mode and follow steps. d) Either in Windows Vista or 7, if a problem occurs in PAF5, in Edit Window, where the Place field will not accept changes, or is not highlighted in Blue, an easy way to overcome it temporary: - Options - New Event/Attribute - Close - Make the change - Save" Ross GH Cotton Burlington ON CAN 905)639-2929 Skype me at - Cottonian Library Genealogy of the Cotton surname is my Enigma I haven't sent an attachment if the details aren't mentioned above GOONS member responsible for tracking the surname COTTON, #1437 Coordinator for Cotton DNA testing Project, Worldwide See http://home.comcast.net/~Cottondna/ -----Original Message----- From: Bob Demers Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2011 9:10 PM To: paf-5-users@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAF-5] PAF 5.2 Companion - problem with some charts in Windows 7 How, I pray, does one do this? //Bob Demers/ On 4/14/2011 6:39 PM, Ross G.
