It should be right next to your data file. Thus you should have a <name>.PAF file and a <name>.PAL file. The latter is the log. I have extensions turned on and see them, otherwise you will have to just look at the type column in Windows Explorer. Bill > Once again, I can't find the log on PAF 5! Once again, I can't find the log on PAF 5! THE index under "help" doesn't bring it up; maybe it's called something else. It's the list of changes made in my data base in the past. Can someone help me find it? Thanks again from Ethel in Nebraska
Marion Open the progam first, then browse to desktop paf icon (not showing correctly). then open and Win7 should then know next time what program it uses. Is more complicated option I'll others explain. Steve On 31/05/2011 3:19 AM, Marion wrote: > Good afternoon > > I have just bought a Windows 7 laptop and transferring files. Hi Marion There can be a host of problems that might cause your problem, but the first one to check is to make certain that PAF was installed as a 32bit program. It is very likely that your new Windows7 laptop is running a 64bit cpu chip, and needs to know when a program wants it to simulate the old 32bit environment. To check, use the Microsoft Explore program (not the Internet Explorer browser) and see if there is a folder linked to the C drive called Program Files (x86). If you have such a folder, open it and see if there is a sub-folder called FamilySearch. If you have a FamilySearch sub-folder, open it up and see if there is a Paf5 sub-folder. If you have a Paf5 folder, open it up and you should see all of the PAF5 programs and routines. If you don't, then you will need to reinstall PAF5 and when Windows asks if the program is a 64 bit program, answer No. If you do have these subfolders, then report back. File/print reports/books/ahnentafel is one way. File/export/PARTIAL/select/Ancestors OK Export followed by create a new PAF file, then File/Import/whateveryou called it, is another. Since I'm not configged to show the LDS fields, I won't swear the first one does, but the 2nd one certainly will. Cheryl
Kent, I'm assuming that when you say direct line ancestors you mean your direct line ancestral couples and their families. The quickest method to see which families still need ordinances is to look at your pedigree chart. Turn on LDS ordinance data first. If any ancestor does not have all of the ordinance code letters BEPSC then someone in that family needs some work. Or you can create a custom report that contains only your ancestors and then print out the regular PAF reports on incomplete ordinances. First, lets get clear on your steps to be sure we are on the same page. After you pasted the information into Notepad, did you re-select it in Notepad and do a fresh copy before pasting it into PAF? If not you would have been pasting the original data. As an aside, for anyone who does a lot of pasting into PAF, the freeware PureText does the same thing as running the data through Notepad, but it can be done in one step using a hotkey (such as Windows + V). It can be found here. http://www.stevemiller.net/puretext/ Gary Templeman ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathy Campbell" <KatGCamp@bellsouth.net> To: <paf-5-users@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 20, 2011 12:55 PM Subject: Re: [PAF-5] Weird Error > It is very likely that you copied information that had some format > characters > included and was not pure text. I use that Pure Text program every day, very handy and simple to use, try it out it solved all my problems and removes all the clutter. Good suggestion. I have once or twice gotten rid of the obvious problem (the error message) by unlinking the couple from the rest of the tree, then re-entering the same info in new records. DON'T delete the two records yet! A sysanalyst I know says that often a simple typo (hitting the ctl or alt or apple/window key) will cause pointer errors. And those are invisible to the user, only the machine sees them. I don't usually find that check/repair works on these. Cheryl
It is very likely that you copied information that had some format characters included and was not pure text. These hidden characters may have been the problem. If you are going to copy, you might copy to Notepad first and look for any strange characters and delete them. Then copy from Notepad to PAF 5. It may be that saving to a GEDCOM would have deleted these characters too, or at least made them visible when viewed with a text editor. That's what I did - copied to Notepad and then to PAF, and it's always worked before. I double checked, and there was nothing odd at all. Kathy

As indicated by others, I would copy the database and/or backup the database. Then delete the 2 individuals and there marriage. Then do the repair. After completion, reenter the information for these 2 individuals. You might consider making a GEDCOM for these 2 folks so their information is saved elsewhere before you start playing with the database. In fact, you may be able to just import the GEDCOM after deletion and repair to fix the problem. That's what is so odd, after doing all the steps, deleting them, etc., when I reentered them and cut and pasted stuff into the their notes (the same info I had tried earlier), I got the same error again. They are okay now that I typed the info into their notes. K

If Check/Repair can't fix it, try opening it and saving it in FamilyInsight if you have it. If you don't have it, and Check/Repair fails, delete the couple and enter them again. (Always backup your database with a new file name before any such changes.) Let us know how things went. I don't have insight. After I typed the people's notes into their entries, it was okay, but there was something going on between Notepad and PAF and this particular set of notes, if it was the notes and not the individuals themselves. Kathy
There is an internal error in the database. Try doing a repair of the database. On the top menu choose File then choose Check/Repair. Sometimes you have to do it more than once before everything is fixed. I did that several times, and each time I got the same error again in the same people. I ended up having to type up the notes into the two people's notes, and then it worked okay. Just cutting and pasting from Notepad which normally works fantastic didn't work for these two. Thanks. Kathy
Kathy, If Check/Repair can't fix it, try opening it and saving it in FamilyInsight if you have it. If you don't have it, and Check/Repair fails, delete the couple and enter them again.
