    1. Re: [PAF-5] Backup PAF Files

    3. One very nice program for backups, and is free for non-commerciall use, is Karen's Replicator, available at www.karenware.com . It will copy across network drives in addition to drives on the same computer, can set up multiple jobs, and replicate file deletions as well as changes. If you get a drive that does NOT come with its own backup program, Replicator would be a good choice. 3. Over the years I have had trouble remembering to backup my PAF data files, as well as other files on my Laptop PC including photos and other things. I have a CD-RW and used it to make backups, but still I sometimes let a long time go between backups with the potential for losing a lot of valualable information and work. Then someone suggested having an external Hard Drive. It is connected through the USB port and has software that backs up my internal Hard Drive every Friday at 10:00 p.m. or the next time the computer is on after this time. The first time it took about a half hour to backup the entire HD. Now, only new files or files that have been changed are copied to the external drive which usually takes about 3-4 minutes over my slow USB 2 port. (If I can ever get a PCMCIA USB converter to work for USB 2, I am told that it would be about 10 times faster.) It is almost idiot-proof. If I take my laptop and drop it, or lose it, have it stolen, or have my car stolen with the laptop in the trunk, at least I have all of my files. This has given me a FABULOUS feeling of security. Cost: about $150. Not inexpensive, but even if my time is worth only a dollar an hour (and I like to think it is worth more than that) it would be cheap at ten times the cost. FYI: the 300 gig external drive is about 1x3.5x5 inches, so it takes up very little space. Tom Sevy in Taylorsville, Utah

    1. Combining two PAF-5 files?
    2. From: _JEAorMHA@aol.com_ (mailto:JEAorMHA@aol.com) To: _PAF-5-USERS-L-request@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:PAF-5-USERS-L-request@rootsweb.com) Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 9:29 AM Subject: Combining two PAF-5 files? Can two PAF5 files be combined, I am not referring to individual records? There was an original file created for my wife's family, including both her father's and mother's lines. Her father's line is much more complete. Her mother's line has a couple of hundred names, created from a pedigree chart and does not include notes. Recently, a cousin sent a gedcom file which I entered as a separate PAF 5 file, which contained his father's line as well as his mothers, the latter being the same as my wife's mothers, from their grandmothers back. His information is much more complete, and contains notes. The question is. Is there a way to disconnect the information beginning with my wife's grandmother from her PAF 5 file and connect the information beginning with my wife's grandmother from his PAF 5 file to hers, retaining all the info for her father's line? We do not want his father's info connected, since that is not her line. If it can be gone, what about the RINS? His are different than my wife's for the same individual. Maybe this is too complex a thing to do but I would like someone knowledgeable to say so. If it can't be done, then is the only way to get his info into my wife's files, to reenter from the keyboard person by person? This will be a time consuming task. I would appreciate help. Thank you. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Combining two PAF-5 files?
    2. Gary Templeman
    3. There are a number of ways to accomplish what you need. First though, don't worry about the RINs. Those are numbers the program creates to identify the records, but they can and will change as you add and delete people. They should not be considered some kind of permanent identifier. What I would do is start another new PAF file. From the other ones, create gedcom file exports of the good portions of each one. So from your wife's old file you would export her, her current family and descendents, her parents family, her father's ancestor line, etc. You would EXCLUDE the incomplete line from grandma back. From the file created from the cousin you would ONLY export from that grandma back and exclude his father's line. Import those two gedcoms into the new file. As long as you have grandma's family in common in each one then you simply merge the duplicates. If anyone at the junction point is only in there once you might need to link up their relationship. If you screw up and happen to miss a few you can manually enter them if you want, but *anyone* who is in the original databases can be transferred by way of gedcom. It is just a matter or selecting the ones you want and excluding the rest. 2. Maxine Hartley
    3. Lost my hard drive with a lot of work on it and I do not want to repeat this mistake so am trying to do both copies and back-ups to Cds regularly. Problem - With back-ups there is an option to back-up with a new name. I use the date which gives me back-ups in chronological order. When I try to copy my data to Cd, the choice seems to be replace the last copy or cancel. Is there a nice SIMPLE [nice easy steps please] solution for this or do I have to use a new disk every time. I'm using Windows XP, Paf 5.2.18.0 and Nero. I will be grateful for any help. Thank you. maxinehartley@sympatico.ca

Partly because I am unclear about what you mean by 'plop into events'. But this program will produce a file of the OBIT: data. If you are interested in pursuing this let me know. Also, to run this script requires some other files. If you have a high speed Internet connection the easiest way to get those files is to download and install the 'J' computer language from http://www.jsoftware.com/download/j503a.exe but that is a 4 MB download. Do you want to make a backup before continuing?" When you merge two records the one that shows on the right half of the screen ends up getting deleted. By default the information in the record on the left gets kept. The checkboxes beside each field on the right give you a chance to over-ride the information on the left on a field by field basis. Say for example the record on the left has good and completed data except for the burial info. While the record on the right has complete burial info. You could check the box next to burial info on the right before doing the merge. Then you would get burial info from one record and all other info from the other. If the record that happens to show up on the left has poor info in general and you would prefer to keep the info on from the record on the right there is a button to switch to two. But generally speaking if you don't do anything to override it the record that shows on the left will be the one that is kept and all the relationships linked to the record on the right will be adjusted to point to the record on the left.

    3. Hi listers. For those of you who have been wondering about the future of PAF will be interested in an email message that was issued today by the LDS Church's Family History Department. I have taken the liberty to edit the message to remove some of the verbiage that is intended to limit the openings to LDS church members only. A couple of years ago when I reviewed the project they are designing, I was astonished by the immense scope of the project. It looks like they have finally funded the project and are putting together the team who will make it happen. This is exciting. Richard Rands Dear BYU Alum, You are receiving this letter from the BYU Alumni placement office as a courtesy to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Department. The Church has recently embarked upon a multi-year effort to revamp nearly every aspect of the Church's family history software and processes. This effort will simplify family history research and temple work for individual Church members. To accomplish this task we are seeking highly qualified and experienced individuals... You are receiving this letter as an alumni of BYU to make you aware of and solicit your possible interest in participating in this exciting project within the Family and Church History Department. We are looking for talented and exceptional software engineers, QA engineers, development managers, project managers, and human factors specialists to join us. We anticipate that this assignment will last for a period of 3-5 years, after which time the individuals will return to private industry as they develop their careers. Because the individuals we seek are in high market demand, we expect that many of them are currently employed but would be willing to consider a period of employment with the Church to participate in this special effort. If you are interested, please let us know. "Abbreviated job descriptions and requirements are attached. The work is technically and spiritually challenging and rewarding. The team of individuals thus far engaged in the effort includes some of the area's best talent. Should you join us, you will have the satisfaction of working on a significant and meaningful project that will be of profound importance to millions of people... We have open positions in Salt Lake City and American Fork, Utah. If you are interested in any of the attached positions or know of someone else who is interested and meets our qualifications, please send resumes to <mailto:FCH-Recruiter@ldschurch.org>FCH-Recruiter@ldschurch.org.

In one extreme instance, I have eight people with identical names within three generations -- only two for which I have both birth and death dates.
