    1. Is this a PAF problem, or my other software?
    2. Adrian Gray
    3. Hi, I've recently composed a large file in my normal FH software, The Master Genealogist. However on beginning to send it round other people as a GEDCOM it became apparent that all sorts of funny things happened when it was opened. I installed PAF 5.0 to try to make it openable by as many people as possible, and tried to import said GEDCOM - result little flashing boxes telling me about errors etc, so many that it was obvious it would never import sensibly so I abandoned it. Next step - try to save as a PAF file from TMG and open in PAF. Easy! No! I can save it & get a file on my disc with the .paf suffix and the fetching little PAF icon but when I try to open it PAF simply closes down. No warning, no flashing boxes, it just vanishes from the screen as if I'd never opened it. The GEDCOM works in TMG and also opens in Legacy so this seems to either be problem with PAF or with something I am doing. As a new user I don't know what, and I can't find anything in the help file either. Can anyone help me? Adrian

    2. While I do not doubt people's experiences with problems, I personally combine files from PAF 5.2, FTM, Legacy, etc. all the time. I export/import/etc. and I have had no problems. I have never lost a parent/child relationship or had non-bio parents become bio parents. In my immediate family we have multiple combinations of biological, adoptive, sealed, etc. parents often where one is biological and the other is adoptive. My oldest son is my wife's by her first marriage but I am his adoptive father. It has always worked for me. It is true that I do not create my own custom database fields, I stick with the many ones that are provided. 3. A good test of PAF child-parent and spouse relationships is a GEDCOM transfer to a second genealogy program followed by a GEDCOM transfer back to the original program used for data entry. Compare descendant reports before and after the GEDCOM round trip. If the second program uses "direct import" or Genbridge for PAF files, the results may be slightly different than the PAF GEDCOM import. Current versions of genealogy programs may be different than those as old as PAF 5 released Dec 2000 and last updated July 2002, I'm guessing those dates from some archived messages. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- > While I do not doubt people's experiences with problems, I personally > combine files from PAF 5.2, FTM, Legacy, etc. all the time. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Is this a PAF problem, or my other software?
    2. E.Rodier
    3. Adrian, If you want to share data with individuals using different genealogy programs, it is best to test file transfers *during* data entry and avoid custom fields. PAF has one source field that is shorter than GED 5.5 standard. Other programs used the same field for lengthy source text though the standard was about three lines. Child-parent relationships are lost in all (or most) file transfers *or* may be changed from non-bio to bio relationships. It might be helpful to search for all non-bio relationships and remove them before a file transfer between genealogy programs. "Direct entry" of PAF 5 files by two other genealogy programs has issues with non-bio child-parent relationships. Advanced programs allow sources for name variations. PAF is limited to the main name without a source. Highly detailed source and repository data entry methods are known to cause file transfer problems. Custom GEDCOM tags with underlines are usually ignored by the importing program. Do you have any children attached to non-bio parents? PAF assumes that a child has the same relationship to two parents. If one or both bio parents remarried, the child might be attached to other marriages with a bio relationship or a non-bio relationship. One of the list participants kept the bio relationship for father's second marriage and non-bio relationship for the mother's second marriage in a PAF test file. Other Windows genealogy programs going back to 1993 have allowed children to be attached to one bio parent and second spouse and/or two bio parents and/or two non-bio parents -- always with individual child-parent relationships. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Adrian Gray" > I've recently composed a large file in my normal FH software, The Master > Genealogist. > However on beginning to send it round other people as a GEDCOM it became > apparent > that all sorts of funny things happened when it was opened. > > I installed PAF 5.0 to try to make it openable by as many people as > possible, and tried to > import said GEDCOM - result little flashing boxes telling me about errors > etc, so many > that it was obvious it would never import sensibly so I abandoned it. > > Next step - try to save as a PAF file from TMG and open in PAF. 3. Hi Peggy Can't help you with World Connect but as far as GEDCOMs go PAF 5 will include pictures if you click on Multimedia when you create the GEDCOM. The GEDOM does not include the pictures but only the links. You will need to send the picture files with the GEDCOM. The person receiving the combination simply finds one of the pictures and PAF will change all the links. Works well. 2. Richard Rands
    3. Hi Peggy, The main objective of the GEDCOM standard was to have a file that is limited to ASCII text so that anyone would be able to build an import and export function to exchange data. Once you start to include non-ASCII code such as photos or images, then the whole point of GEDCOM is lost. However, I suspect that GEDCOM will be supplanted some day with an XML standard and everyone will have to convert their import and export routines to support the XML version. I have actually seen a document that is an XML version of GEDCOM, so I know that it is in the works. 1. RAF 5 Compatable PPC program?
    2. Joe Buford
    3. Greetings, I've been lurking here for a while picking up tips on using PAF5. What I'm wondering is, is there a pocket PC compatable version of PAF5 that I can run on my Dell Axim X5 that will allow me to syncronize my data between my desktop and PPC. I've been trying out Pocket Geneologist but ir requires conversion to gedcom and therefor data can be transfered but not sync'd. Also, it is optimized for Legacy Family Tree and will sync with that program. All help appriciated. BTW-My line is BUFORD from VA/KY. Farthest back is 1820. 3. If we are too far off topic here please say so. I like it because it is so easy to browse through. There isn't a way to edit it except maybe overwriting photos with updated ones. I've had the site up for 5 or 6 years on different servers. I needed support to get it working first time and Michael Horey helped me. It is a java application and must be compiled but don't let that scare you. Follow the steps and it will work. 1. Export your GEDCOM as "Other GEDCOM 5.5". Must be ANSI! 2. Make a new folder where you can find it easily and name it something like "My GEDCOM". 3. Copy the GEDCOM to that folder. 4. Make 3 new folders under My GEDCOM and name them "Photos", "Comments", and "index.html". 5. Gather all of the photos you want to use into one folder somewhere. Resize them to 15 KB or less, (group photos may need to be larger). Windows XP Power Toys has a photo resizer that works well. 6. Move your resized photos to the Photos folder and rename them 001.jpg through 100.jpg or however many you have. I think they must be jpg. 7. Make a plain text file with headers and comments for each photo and put it in the Comments folder. 8. Fire up dftcom2 and point it to the GEDCOM, (it won't know where to find it first time). 9. Select your browser, (important). 10. Set photos to interactive. 11. Start compiling. It will allow you to select and add the photos. When you add a photo find the person it matches. To avoid sorting through your whole database type in the person's name exactly as it is in the GEDCOM such as "Robert J. Linn". Then copy your header and comments in before going to the next photo. IMPORTANT, do not click OK until you have added all of the photos. 12. dftcom2 will put your website in your My GEDCOM folder and you can preview it. 13. Go to the Website folder and rename "example.html" "index.html". 14. Using an HTML editor, add your comments etc. I use Front Page and Dreamweaver but there are a lot of them available free. 15. Upload all of the files in the website folder to your server. Just the files, not the folder. 16. Post the address of your website here. We want to see it. Note: Your source data will not show on the website but all of the notes will. -----Original Message----- From: h cardinal [mailto:harcardinal@earthlink.net] Sent: Monday, February 21, 2005 11:01 AM To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAF-5] Backup to website Bill, Your site is incredible! 1. Backup PAF Files- Simple on the web
    2. David Creelman
    3. My 2 favourite ways to backup on the web: Send an email to my gmail account with the backup file attached. A ged or paf file would also work if they aren't too huge. If you don't have gmail(with it's 1gig storage), get an account here- http://isnoop.net/gmail/ The other is upload your gedcom to Rootsweb's World Connect. That is the easiest way to share your data on the web anyway, and you have control of the gedcom if you want to make changes or remove it. More important here is the option to retrieve your ged if you need it. Very easy once you have signed in to your account. David Creelman

I particularly like the Dynamic Family Tree software you're using. http://userweb.suscom.net/~billinn/ I searched on google and found the website for Dynamic Family Tree http://www.dftcom2.co.uk/ When did you put up your website? Have you used this software very long? Had any difficulties? Would you recommend it? I had no idea that this was available free. Thanks! Harriet

They all want to read a GEDCOM file. This should be a file of your whole dataset. Since I didn't know the SrcRin of the source record you wanted these citations tied to I wrote this little script (note_obit_finds.ijs) to look for a Source with 'OBIT' in the title. It should prompt you to make a change to 'note_obit.ijs' to set the correct SrcRin. Note_obit.ijs will create a GEDCOM file (in the same folder as the one it read - the name will have '-obt' tacked on the end - before the '.ged') If you are familiar with GEDCOM you might want to puruse it directly or load it into a new, empty PAF file. This isn't a finished product because this script only addresses the first form. But it will give you something to analyze to see if I got it right, to see if this script catches all the records you intended it to catch .... It also produces a log file: '\change.log'. This will be 'C:\change.log' unless you install J on some other drive. The third script, 'note_obit2.ijs' is an exploration expedition to help me understand the second form better. It produces a file with '-obt2' stuck in the filename but it really isn't a gedcom file. For every individual that has a '(Obit.)' or '(Obit)' or '(Obit,)' (just in case you have some typos) in the notes it extracts the name section and the Notes section. I would have put in other possible typo variations in the search but I'm not very good at guessing what variations might arise. Some of the questions I had in mind to explore by this means are: 1) Is the name (in all caps) that precedes the colon the same or different from the name of the individual whose notes this occurs in. (I.E. are these kind of entries always references to evidence of relationship to someone else) 2) Is there always a blank line before and after such entries. 3) Does the '1 line' form ever wrap to multiple lines in the export to GEDCOM process? But more important than these questions are the ones that don't occur to me to ask. Viewing this file will probably raise many other questions and provide the answers to all or most of them. --------------060004070707050900070107 Content-Type: text/plain; name="note_obit_finds.ijs" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="note_obit_finds.ijs" NB. load 'files' load 'regex' OBIT_Rins =: '' PRBLM_Rins =: '' ChgLog =: '' main =: 3 : 0 fn =: wd 'mbopen "" "\zhold" "*.ged"' aa =: (1!:1) <fn f =. 3. Well, this needs a little discussion. First choice would probably be your own ISP. Virtually all of them offer a website to their subscribers at no additional cost, (I have 5 because other family members who subscribe to Suscom.net don't use theirs). The free ones offer anywhere from 5 to 50 MB of storage space. 1. You need an ftp program. There are many of those available free also and they're easy to use. I use WS_FTP LE which you can get at downloads/cnet/com. 2. You need the address to the web host which is usually the same as the ISP and is shown on their address bar as HTTP://ispname/~subscriber. In your case it would be HTTP://satx.rr.com/~MaryEllen. You also need a valid password which is the same password you use to access your account. 3. You can upload any file to your website and download it again anytime and no one else can get to it or even see it without your password. 4. If you want others to see it you must upload it in a form that it will display and name the cover page "index.html". PAF-5 will automatically make that file for you to upload. Mine isn't PAF-5 but you can look at it here if you like. http://userweb.suscom.net/~billinn/ I have other files on that website also but no one else can see them because they aren't in the root "/" folder. 5. Here are a few sites that offer free website hosting but there are hundreds of other ones. www.homestead.com/ http://www.bravenet.com/ http://www.jamminweb.com/ http://geocities.yahoo.com/ I'm aware this is off-topic but I feel other members could benefit from it. 3. Bill makes a good point about theft, fire, flood, earthquakes, etc. The operative concept is to have AT LEAST one, preferably multiple, off-site copies that are updated regularly. Using a program like Replicator is one way to copy information to another location. If that location is portable, such as an external hard drive or a thumb drive then you have one option for off-site storage. Burning a CD-R or CD-RW is another, slower option. Uploading to other web sites, sending copies to relatives and so on add additional layers of protection. Unfortunately, my experience in working with patrons at our FHC is that the majority of people do not even make floppy backups. An even lower percentage will be committed enough to learn how to use an FTP program for uploading to an online storage site, or to *consistently* send updated backups to relatives, friends, etc. Ideally one would learn how to schedule and automate the uploads to help insure they take place. Making that commitment is important if you consider your data as an irreplaceable resource. 3. All well and good. I know you've seen me say, "backup, backup, backup" many times. I have always had 2 hard drives in my computer, (what's the chance of them both failing at the same time?). That isn't enough. There is still theft, fire, flood, earthquake, etc. to consider. So many years of work can go into a tiny genealogical file. When I do updates I send a copy to a relative, another to a friend, and post one to a website, (there are many cost free websites available). You have to ask "what if?". It will copy across network drives in addition to drives on the same computer, can set up multiple jobs, and replicate file deletions as well as changes. If you get a drive that does NOT come with its own backup program, Replicator would be a good choice.
