When Charles was the focus, he showed NO marriages. Double clicking on the marriage didn't do anything, whereas when a person has an 'unknown' spouse, this action will let you delete the marriage. So for all intents and purposes, he was single, but also married if you came in through the back door. Sandy

    3. For the first time, ever, I had an unusual situation occur while looking through my PAF file. Nellie was married to Charles. If the focus is on Nellie (she appears in the upper box on the family view), Charles is there and all the kids. If I shift the focus to Charles, Nellie disappears and he is shown as unmarried. If I search for Nellie, it shows Charles as her husband and again, as long as she is in focus, he's there. When he has the limelight, he's a single man. (ha ha....just realized this is something of a metaphor!) Anyway, why would these two individuals be in this odd connection? I had to delete Charles altogether and add him in and then put him in a marriage with Nellie all over again. It works now, but what could possibly have happened? Sandy

    1. Re: [PAF-5] Re: Backing up PAF files
    2. Gary Templeman
    3. A typical problem I find when working with patrons at our FHC is they try to *open* a backup file rather than *restore* a backup file. When opening doesn't work they think the file is corrupted. The difficulty comes about because we mix terminology. The PRINCIPLE of backing up can be fulfilled either by creating a *backup file*, which is a specific file and uses a .zip extension, OR by creating a *copy* of the original .paf file. By the same token, the terms open and restore have precise meanings but are often used or interchanged incorrectly. If the*backup* is a copy, then it should be *opened*, using the same program that created it. If the *backup* is a true backup file then the way to retrieve it is to use the *restore* command. If you try to restore a .paf file, or try to open a .zip file, neither will work. It therefore becomes essential to specify and understand the differences between a backup copy and a backup file. The second most common error I see with patrons is thinking they are saving their backup (of whatever type) to a floppy, only to arrive at the fHC with a blank disk. Invariably they actually saved the file to their hard drive. 3. Some more solutions here, two from the DOS world, which do still work on XP if you know haw to get to the command prompt. Fix2Ged is very old (1993) but still works. http://www.paf-review.com/inf/fix2ged.html and can be downloaded from http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=downloadinfo&cat=GedCom&id=6 Acc2Ged is another http://website.lineone.net/~d.j.cooke/wintree.htm You can also import a CSV file into Brothers Keeper using the Utilities program BK5 UTILITY. http://www.bkwin.org/download.htm I believe this needs the version 5 program to work. 3. The problem with this question is the variety of formats and layout you can have in you Excel "database". Are you just trying to transfer vital records or do you also have linked relationships? I have looked around this one before and found the following options. There is a program here written in VBA for Excel. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://ahnenforschung.net/users/GedTool.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dgedcom%2Bto%2Bexcel%26start%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN You will find a number of solutions if you search on Google. Also have a look at: A "knife and fork"method http://www.tedpack.org/text2ged.html The French seem keen on this idea too: TransGed: a simple one http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.visuged.org/fcttg.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Danachron%2Bgedcom%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG Anachron: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.correze-genealogie.org/Federation/sites.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Danachron%2Bgedcom%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG There is also a macro within "Ancestor Access" http://home.att.net/~douglas.parrish/home.htm which is a Microsoft Access database that converts the Access database tables into a Gedcom. The challenge is getting your data into Access. This latter one has been my preferred approach. Contact me off list if you need nay specific help. Regards Graham

    1. Modifying Family View a good idea
    2. Helen W Hamilton
    3. I agree with the idea of adding more information to the family view page. I would like to see a column for a death date. Just the year, not the day or month would be fine. Also I would like a similar column for the state where they were born. As it is now one has to click on each child to find out whether their data is complete. I would like a quick look to see where I need to fill in more data. Helen

    1. RE: [PAF-5] Sources and Citations
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. Hi Graham, This is a PAF reporting problem that has perplexed me for years. The objective being - other than on the PAF system - to review or pass on details of all the sources held for each - or any individual on the database. I can give you a method for doing this - but it is not for the faint hearted - and you need to have pretty good Excel skills. It brings together: - Individual Event Sources - Individual Sources - Marriage Event Sources But not Family Sources! (Only because the Citation List Report in Standard PAF does not access them either!) Without dragging out the nitty gritty individual steps - the outline of the method is: 1. Produce a print-to-file report for each 'Citation Referencing a source' - results in a rtf (rich-text) file for each report. 2. Save each rtf file as txt (text) file. 3. Open each txt file in Excel (in turn) - specifying the only field delimiter as a full stop. 4. As each txt file is opened as an Excel file and the columns adjusted to view the data there may be exceptional problems that need correction - when a full stop has been used in a Name field (after any initials) - such exceptions need the data now in further columns to be cut & pasted to conform with the majority column layout. 5. Copy the source title and the block of citation details to a master combined spreadsheet. (The source title needs to be copied/pasted into each citation line). 6. When completed - the combined spreadsheet - using some clever Excel formulae (hence the Excel expertise) the details in the name field can be separated out to separate columns for RIN, Surname, Other Names & Source Type (Birth/Death etc + Individual). 7. The resulting spreadsheet can then be sorted to your requirements - i.e. - Surname/Other Names/RIN and your report can now present the source citation details held for each event for each individual. As I said above - you need to be determined to do tackle this. And because the basic PAF Citation report does not access Family sources, they are missing - and in my use of sources, regrettably it does not access the Source Comment field either. Only a partial work around and labour intensive - roll on a better feature in the next version! I will be very interested in any other approaches to this problem. 2. Hi, I too would like to see the children's death dates directly in the "Family View" (in my case called "Familien"-Ansicht, because I use a German set up). If it were possible to do this, would you please let me know how I can do this? Yet it might be that due to differently named screens in my German version I misunderstood. Richard and Donna wrote: > you can modify the Individual view to include Death date etc. With "Individual View" do you mean here: a) the PAF users individual set up of the screens? OR b) the display mode in my case called "Person" [might in English be "Individual persons view"? Is the list were all persons are displayed] OR c) the window appearing when clicking on a person, in my case called "Person bearbeiten" [might in English be "Person - update, work or change this persons individual data". It's the place to add data like events or sources for this person and the death event is given by default.] I'm aware that you can display death dates in the "Stammbaum"-Ansicht" [might in English be Family tree view] via the pop-up windows. I'm also aware that you can add fields to the view, in my case called "Person" [list were all the persons in the database are displayed and where you can add additional rows of displayed info] Yet in my PAF help manual I found no reference how to display children's death dates in the "Familie View". If it's possible, would appreciate info how to set this up. Thanks for advise.
