    3. The easiest way to open a ".rtf" file is to browse to the folder where it is saved (through "My Computer" or "My Documents"), and double-click on the filename. It will open in "WordPad", a simple word processing program which comes installed on any computer using Windows and will read any ".rtf" or ".txt" file. The other way to open a file is by starting in "WordPad." Click on "Start" (bottom left-hand corner of your computer), click on "All Programs", scroll to "Accessories", find "WordPad". You still have to know where the ".rtf" file was saved so you can browse to it and open it. 3. Is there something I should know about printing a succession of individual reports to file? I selected 12 individuals and have spent the last 4 hours trying to print them to file so I can cut'n'paste notes from where I put them to where I want them. I was on-line and in a hurry, and after a bit decided it would be faster to figure out WHICH of 7 men of the same name a specific paragraph meant after I disconnected, so I put everything into the NOTES I had open at that time. These were two to four liners and copying the source info and then the 2 to 4 lines, save, save, find, open, etc etc was taking a while. Now, I've got a couple full pages of notes in X and more than half of it belongs to a,b,c,d, and e. I print to file, it saves an rtf file, but nothing can open the file. Doing an open and repair gets me machine code; doing a retrieve text gets me massive amounts of obscure code that makes JAVA look intelligble. Error message says the I've been denied permission or I'm out of disc space. Both are unlikely, unless PAF has suddenly started doing something squirrley. Cheryl

    3. I have found in many cases where I had an 'unknown' for a spouse I could simply add the 'correct spouse' to the current marriage, eliminating the unknown. Case 1 existing - Mr. Jones + unknown Create Mary Smith (the correct wife) Select Mr. Jones and Add Spouse - select Mary Smith - the program will ask 'do you want to add this spouse to the current marriage' - this wipes out the unknown and replaces it with Mary Smith Regina Barry * rmbarry1066@earthlink.net * http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbarry4145/index.htm

    1. Re: [PAF-5] Underscore or bold in NOTES
    2. I do not believe that either underscore, bold or italics can be in Notes or Actual Text of the Source Citation. I have done Copy and Paste into Notes and Actual Text. The underscore, bold or italics shows immediately after doing a Paste, but after the Notes or Actual Text is stored and re-displayed they are all gone. Several years ago I asked someone in PAF development why there was no text "wrap around" in the Notes. This was about the time that PAF 3 was released. He told me that they "ran out of money". Originally it was to have been included. Now we have text "wrap around" (at the end of every line). I suspect that Tabs, Underscore, Italics and Bold are in the same category. You did not enquire about tabs. They are present in both the Notes and Actual Text. They require <Ctrl> + <Tab>. However, they are preset and cannot be moved. As far as I know only Left Tab is provided (i.e., no Right Tab, Center Tab or Decimal Tab). Furthermore, although the tabs in Notes does print, the tabs in Actual Text does not. Personally, although I would like to have the underscore, bold and italics capability, I would find tabs to be of greater use. Richard L. 3. Hullo Users, I have an Uncle in my family erroneously entered as a female. I have just located his hitherto unknown wife and when I went to enter her details PAF wouldn't let me change the sex for either. So now George is female and Margaret is a male. Originally I seem to remember the handwriting on Georges Death Cert was a bit hard to decypher and I mistakenly entered him as female, anyway that's my story. How do I make the correction please ? 1. RE: [PAF-5] Removing an unknown for a marriage
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. The term "UNKNOWN" for a spouse is added in by PAF when you create a marriage but are unable to supply the name of the spouse - or when you add a child with only one parent identified. It is really quite logical - if one of the spouses or one of the parents is not known, PAF supplies the term "UNKNOWN". Note however, that this unknown individual does not occupy a RIN space on the system. If you subsequently find out a name for the unknown spouse, simply double click on the unknown spouse --- add in the details, then PAF will ask you if these details are to take the place of the unknown spouse or does it represent another spouse in addition to the unknown spouse. So, for a genuine known marriage without the name of one of the spouses or for children where both parents are not known - you will not be able to get rid of the "UNKNOWN" designation. If, however, the "UNKNOWN" has been created because you accidentally initiated a marriage record - simply deleting the marriage record will get rid of the unknown spouse. 1. RE: [PAF-5] Changing sex without surgery
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. A most amusing situation! Basically, PAF will not let you change the sex at this stage because you have already defined the respective individuals in their male and female roles (i.e., husband and wife). What you need to do is to delete the marriage ------ and then PAF will let you change their sex. Of course when you do the delete of the marriage you are also un-linking the parents from all of their children ----- so after you change their sex, you will need to re-add the marriage and then re-link their children to the marriage ----- to do this, you should carefully note the RIN numbers of the respective spouses and their children and the details (date, place, notes, sources) for the marriage.. Good luck! Many papers keep obits/death notices available on-line for an extended period. Even a search by first name in a time frame might get it for you. 3. If you are both using PAF-5 you can do this by highlighting your nephew's name in the family sheet, then select File\Print Reports. At the reports page, be sure you check the box, "Print to File". You'll want a single page Pedigree chart with 5 generations. Preview it and if it is what you want select Print. This will generate an RTF file in Microsoft Word or in some versions of Word Perfect, if you both use one of those work processors. You can attach the RTF file to an email. The way PAF-5 generates charts, (everything in a text box), they are very difficult to edit. The next step would be to select File\Export, PAF-5, Selected Individuals-Partial and click Select. On the next screen, set the Sort to Alphabetical, Relationship Filter to Ancestors, click the clear button to clear any individuals that may already be selected , then click Select. This will bring up another screen where you can set the number of generations to be selected. When you have set 5 generations and who all should be included click OK, OK. Name the GEDCOM and Export it. Attach it to an email and now your nephew can have his own mini PAF file. It seems to me I have seen these instructions somewhere in the PAF-5 help files. File > Print Reports > Print to file (it's a check box on the right-hand side of the dialogue, under the buttons). When you've configured your report, are ready to print, and have selected "Print to file", clicking on the "Print" button will bring up a dialogue asking you where you want to save the report. It will be saved in RTF format (WinWord can open it). Then you can attach it to an e-mail message to your nephew. You're right, it's not the most intuitive of processes. Best, Donna Hrynkiw

    1. RE: [PAF-5] Re: PAF re FTM
    2. Lance
    3. Richard, your summation of FTM is correct. The FTM methods you described were part of their "modus operandi". However, FTM is now owned by Myfamily.com, which in turn is owned by a group of media companies, prominent among those being Time-Warner/AOL. I would hardly think that having acquired a money-making machine like Ancestry.com they would halt development on FTM? The new 2005 version of FTM is a far different product than that previously promoted. It's even close to being a good, usable product at long last :-) (I have the current version and two other versions to compare). I have never been a fan of FTM, partly because of it being a woeful product and mainly because of the tactics you described, but I can't see it "disappearing" from the scene at least under the present owners. By the way, the same group of companies own this list and all the other Roots Web lists, too. Lance -----Original Message----- From: rhaldy@comcast.net [mailto:rhaldy@comcast.net] Sent: Tuesday, 29 March 2005 2:56 PM To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAF-5] Re: PAF re FTM FTM is noted for the good variety of reports. It has also gained a reputation for having more bugs. Early on they implemented a version of the GEDCOM file that was based on a pre-release of the current GEDCOM standard. Later they added the capability to generate a PAF compatible GEDCOM file. Due to its early deficiencies I believe that it was written by non-genealogists who did not listen to their genealogical consultants. Every year before Christmas they will pester you with promotions for the newest version of FTM. The advertising is skillfully written to suggest that the new "improvements" are much better and more desireable than they actually are. They are probably the most successful commercial genealogical database. They are certainly the most heavily promoted genealogical program. Consider: when the FTM company goes out of business the program will become an "orphan". That will not happen with PAF. Richard L. Halliday West Linn, Oregon
