I need help. All of a sudden this one family is giving me headaches. The family group sheet with notes and sources takes up 6 pages. However, today when I preview a new fgs, it is loading 28 pages! Checking it out page by page I see that included in these 28 pages are the families of the man's father, grandfather and his great-grandfather. I ran check/repair and it came up with no errors. Any ideas of why this would happen and how I can avoid it in the future?. Thanks for your help. Beverly - Mailto:kngsldy@cableone.net Families are Forever!
I just tried a 'trick' I read in a computer magazine. This sounded like a simple way to cut and paste from the word processor to the notes screen in PAF without switching from one screen to the other. The hint was to right click on the task bar and select tile windows horizontally or vertically. I tried it. The two windows I had open did not 'tile.' Instead the non-PAF window shrunk in size, but the PAF window stayed the same size. I had expected results similar to when you tile windows horizontally or vertically within PAF. I wasn't too upset at the experiment's failure except that the font changed on the PAF screen. I went to 'tools' and 'preferences' and 'fonts'. I selected 'default'. Nothing changed on the screen. When I highlight and click on an individual to edit their information, the fonts are very faint, and the text below the 'individual sources' button has its lines of text overlapping each other. The problem here might be that the 'button' is a bit larger than previously. I closed PAF and reopened it, but that made no difference! I also tried opening a different database. Suggestions, please, on how to return to the normal font appearance.... since default didn't accomplish that. Ellen
Brad, If these are the old two digit temple codes, open PAF, click on tools, click on global search and replace, click on the arrowhead at the right side of the top box and select temple codes. Then enter the old code and the new code for each temple. Lynn > > > Is there a fast way to upgrade temple code errors? > > > > I just got a HUGE, HUGE ged.com file. Is there a fast way to upgrade temple code errors? I just got a HUGE, HUGE ged.com file. It has 100s, maybe 1000s of Unknown temple codes. What do I do? An interesting comment Joe - "It lasts well over 100 years" - and one that got me thinking about the "quality" of the different types of paper for printouts of PAF records and other genealogical needs. Paper certainly is one way of ensuring our records are available. For "how long" depends on our selection of papers to use. This site is an interesting one as it sets out a government viewpoint on how to select papers. While it is an Australian State site, the content would be appropriate to anywhere in the world: http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/publicsector/rk/rib/ribpaper.htm On that site, it refers to the National Archives of Australia's "Register of Products". This too is an interesting site and has some links to suppliers of archival record supplies: http://www.naa.gov.au/recordkeeping/preservation/aqt/approved.html There would be similar sites available for most countries detailing where archival quality paper can be purchased. The above sites may give you some guidance into what to look for in your country. The Zetta Florence Archival store has branches in the UK and New Zealand for example. So, besides "backing up" with printouts, we do need to be mindful of the "quality" of the paper we choose to use. Lance P. S. Check out Legacy Family Tree today! Hello List, In acquainting myself with Companion which I have just subscribed\bought to, in opening the 'list' of files, I see the three gedcom's that I imported and a file I have no idea where it came from...I only just opened Companion so it possibly came with it? The file name is: C:downloads\FARREN.PAF. Mod. 28 Feb 2001; Ver. 3.X Not knowing the in's and out's of companion yet, I wonder if this file comes with Companion as a "lesson with all the notes, etc" or can I safely delete, (somewhere) because its not on my harddrive that I can see...its just in my PAF Companion. Saturday morning, with no warning, my hard-drive died. Big time. After hours of work this weekend by my computer geek husband, I have about 40% of my personal files back (including at least one backup of my PAF database file -- alas, it's more than six months old). Among the "lost" are about half of my genealogy digital images and maps, photographs, e-mails, and correspondance records, not to mention many files from my other hobbies, including vacation and family pictures. I face a very large genealogy reconstruction project. Please learn from my mistake. Before you go any further today, make a backup copy of your personal computer files and store them somewhere safe (preferably off-site). Software can be reinstalled, settings can be reset, new hardware can be purchased, but your personal data collection exists nowhere else in the world. Backup your files. Repeat regularly. Just call me, "Donna WishI'dMadeMoreBackups" Donna Hrynkiw

I recently helped someone convert their PAF 2.31 file to PAF 5. On her new computer, when the notes print there are some parts that come out bold for no apparent reason. Unfortunately I cannot send an image as Rootsweb does not accept HTML. In the example she showed me, on a FGR the notes for children 1 and 4 were bold, but normal for children 2 and 3. She did not have anything in bold in PAF 2.31 and would like all of this to be in regular type. I showed her where to find font preferences, but that really does not explain why they would vary within the same report item. Ideas? Gary Templeman
PAF COMPANION is an add-in to PAF. It provides additional reports and variations on printouts. Thank you Richard..I would have thanked you off-list, but I think that my query has been answered by reinstalling PAF5 because the BOOKS tab was grayed out and I thought I was not going to be able to access that option...because your suggestion was not it (Family Group)..but, when I unticked the notes (!) and after reinstalling PAF5, the BOOKS tab became clickable!!! I am running WIN98SE and its probably time for me to upgrade!!!...Thank you again for your reply.. Hello List, I am fairly new to PAF5 coming from Generations Easy Tree..in that program you could print a 'family history report' that included everything one has entered in that persons file, it includes all the notes, family, children and their notes, death, spouse, etc... When I click on the printer icon in PAF, I get the screen that gives me a choice of various reports and charts, but not one of them (that I can see) will include ALL my notes..I have tried various combinations, etc..and of course, checked 'marked notes (!) only" whatever that means...of course ticking 'print to file' In trying to find help in the "help" it never tells you where to go or a map on how to get there. it discusses the problem, but no solution where to go to solve it.. I am very frustrated in not being able to walk myself through PAF. It is time consuming and not a very good idea, for me, to work in two programs..so if someone could tell me where in 'help' I can get help that 'tells it' in plain language!!...even after you've found the term you want, when you click that choice it tells you what it will do, BUT, not how to get there (the map again) HOW do I find the path to saving and printing a report that includes the NOTES!
