Yes, a GEDCOM only carries with it the sources on those people. I literally copied the entire PAF database and renamed the file, no GEDCOM involved. (Leaving me with two databases - MyRealDatabase.paf and MyNewCopy.paf) Then Advanced Focus / Filter, relationship filter All, Delete is a very very quick way to clean out an entire database. But it leaves all the sources in your source list intact. <snip> This is a clever solution when you have a manageable number of individuals you can delete. The important detail to keep in mind is that when you create a GEDCOM, only those sources, repositories, and citations associated with the individuals selected for the GEDCOM are copied into the GEDCOM. So this technique is selective and if you want the entire list of sources, you will have to select the entire database of individuals. I am experimenting with marriage events. the issue is when a family is on a census and you create a citation for each member of the family the printout of the family group sheet is very long. or do you make it a family event? or a family source. how do you copy the individual events like emigration to be a family event. . Richard, Or create an individual or two that use all the sources that you want. When you get to the new data base, delete the "source holders." No, the GEDCOM replies on the people selected. You can import another GEDCOM into the 'empty' database and start attaching sources, source details, etc to those persons. Regina Barry * rmbarry1066@earthlink.net * http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbarry4145/index.htm

Hi Regine Can you create a gedcom of your source database?? (Since there are no individuals). Is there anyone on this list who used PAF 1.0? It came out in 1984. I didn't start using PAF until 2.0 which was released in Sep 1986. I need to know if PAF 1.0 had GEDCOM. I know 2.0 did, in the GIE program (Genealogical Information Exchange). Thanks, Joan Lowrey
I can sympathize with the writer who struggles with Sources. I spend more time on that than writing notes. I am trying to keep the source list short, and find the helps and tips have some good suggestions. But, I was wondering, when I get through with this particular branch of the family in Oregon, could I transfer their sources to a file to save in case I want to work on them again. How could I save them as a list that I could put back into the active source list again sometime? Thanks Helen

I did creat a custom template using some slightly different events - this is one way to see what you want on your individual screen. It will be the labels for different events, not really changing the ones that are there. Check the Help under 'Custom Template'. The one (with the events) that you usually see is the Default template (check lower right of Individual Screen). I think what you want is to create your own template of events. Tools > Preferences > Templates Add (to add your own template. Typically I use my initials in the template to make it really stand out from the standard PAF installation.) Choose fields to add from under "Possible Fields" on the left and use the arrow button in the middle to move it over to "Fields for the template". It doesn't take much work to reproduce the default template and tweak it to your preferences. You can also drag-and-drop the fields in the right column up and down to re-arrange the order if you like. You must include the Full Name and Sex fields. Once you've created your template and are back at the Templates tab, select your template and choose the "Make Active" button to apply the template to everyone in your database. I don't believe you can create custom fields ("Favourite Colour"). That would be information for the Notes area. However the selection of available fields is pretty darned extensive. Stewart, Would it be too much trouble to give brief examples of sources for each of the four classes. I struggle more with sources than any other subject. I would really appreciate it if you would be so kind. Thank you. maxinehartley@sympatico.ca
Is it possible to change the field names on the individual screen (the Custom ID, Married Name, AFN, Physical desc., etc)? Can it be done in an active db or does it have to be done on an empty one? If the latter, do I then just GED the data in, or will it open the old db in the new template? Tnx -- and yes, I guess that is more than one idiot question ... Cheryl
Thanks for your reply. I didn't realize there was an option to cite a source for the Individual. That will come in handy. I did read the help stuff, but missed a lot, apparently. Helen
Hi Helen, There are actually four "classes" of source information that can be added in PAF, as follows: 1. Against any Individual Event that has an "s" (source) button. 2. Against the Individual for sources not directly related to an event ("Individual Sources" button on the Individual Edit screen). 3. Against any Marriage Event that has an "s" (source) button. 4. Against the Family associated with a marriage not directly related to any marriage event (Family Sources button on the Marriage Edit screen).
