    3. That is a Legacy database, they have not exported it as a gedcom, simply sent you a copy of their file. You could download the free version of Legacy which would do the work for you or ask them to export a gedcom. It automatically correct all of the old two letter postal abbreviations to the correct state names. Furthermore, it will allow the addition of USA to follow all of the state names. AND it does not cause the problem referred to above. It has several other capabilities and, if desired, one can return to the state abbreviations (temporarily, I hope) when this is convenient. 3. Global replace can be most helpful with a little forethought. Laura's example would have been more successful had the find been more selective such as: ", IA " (comma, space, IA, space) with the Case Sensitive box checked. It may be necessary to run it a second time with the find as ",IA " (comma, IA, space). And don't forget to include the comma in the replace field: ", Iowa" (comma, space, Iowa). One should never run a global replace without the Create Report of Changes box checked. The listing will identify any incorrect changes and allow you to correct them. 3. <snip> I have info in the "OTHER" fields on many of the people in the data base. I have a number of NOTES marked ! for "public consumption." Three times now I've used the Tools/make webpage to generate code. The last two times I was painfully paranoid about checking "use 'other' fields" and include !marked notes. It doesn't do the first one at all and the 2nd one erratically. <snip> I tested this with one of my people, and it seemed to work fine. I chose the 'embed note' option rather than link - <which puts the notes on a separate notes page>... the links on this aren't active but shows how it should come out on the web page - the 1,2,3 etc are links to a page with the sources . Notice that the 'other events' come after the standard events of b,d,burial.... The 'David Adam Cadle was named' line is the embedded note. Check to see if the note comes right against the ! mark in your text, and that a note is on the top line of the Notes page. A blank line at the top of the Notes page can cause irregular results. The line shown below is in the person as !David Adam Cadle was named after his grandfathers, etc <sample> 1. David Adam CADLE 1, 2 was born 3 on 19 Jan 1854 in Grants Hill,Gentry County,Missouri. 3. Hi Linda. The relationship indicator is not automatically updated. When you make changes to the database, you will need to rerun the indicator in the Preferences menu. If that doesn't fix the problem, then there must be something wrong with the linkages in the database. Next, I would try the relationship calculator and see if it shows the relationship you expect. If that doesn't work, then my inclination is to dump everything to GEDCOM and reload it. Richard Rands At 08:36 AM 5/16/2005 -0600, Linda wrote: >Here's another puzzlement. But it wasn't showing at the bottom of the window. I tried others in the same family. Some showed the relationship, others didn't. Does anyone know why this happens? Obviously, if I know the relationship of one girl as my 5th great grand aunt, any of her sisters will also be the same relationship, and her brothers will be 5th great grand uncles. But why does it only show the relationship for some and not for others? It makes no difference whether it's a direct line individual or a sibling. Sometimes it shows, other times not. Anyone know why? Linda

Also as previously mentioned, It will only work in Individual View. I still think it is a useful shortcut that I discovered by accident. Rollei (from Australia)

    2. Linda
    3. This actually is not a shortcut. It's just a feature of PAF; it works in both the individual listing, as well as in the search feature. And you don't need to hold down the shift. Just start typing the name. And it works for earlier Windows versions, as it works on my 98. You also can use this same feature when wanting to go directly to an RIN number. Click on the RIN tab so that the files are ordered by number rather than alphabetically. Then start typing the number. I know this sounds simplistic, but if you have several thousand names, it's much faster to find it this way than scrolling down through the numbers (just as you've probably found when searching alphabetically.) 3. What is the different between attaching a source to a Marriage event or to a Family? Both of them come out as a superscript at the same word on the marriage information. How would one control which source gets priority? For instance when you want to keep census years or other information associated with a year in the proper chronological order. Helen

First I enter the entire source citation and attach it to the father (usually to the Individual connection, but if it is the source for the birth date (especially the 1900 census) then I attach it to the Birth entry). Second I copy that entire source citation and attach it to the wife, but there I delete all of the children. Third I attach the same memorized citation to the record for each child, but at each child I erase all of the siblings so that it contains only the husband, wife and that particular child. While this still makes the printed list of source citations long (impressively, I hope), I usually use the option to print only the Title when I make a printed copy of a family group sheet. After all, the purpose of a source citation is to allow another researcher to follow your trail of evidence and then, hopefully, to come to the same conclusion that you did. I am currently engaged in re-researching the records of my ancestors who are Scots. The source citations on the family group sheets that I received from Aunts of mine have greatly facilitated this work. Sadly, even tragically, I have discouvered many, way too many, errors. This includes four of my direct ancestors for whom one, or in one case both, of the recorded parents are incorrect. In the worst case I "lost" 52 of their ancestors. Richard L.
