    3. Charlotte: The ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is the simply Roman alphabet. The ANSEL (American National ? ? of Librarians) is the Roman alphabet including the diacritical marks that show pronounciation for European languages. The UTF-8 (Universal Transfer Function -8) and the Unicode are similar enough that I do not know the difference. The Unicode system uses two bytes to allow encoding any of the written languages including Cyrillic, Hebrew, Korean, Chinese, etc. Richard L. 3. What is the protocol in PAF for recording a death when you don't have a day, month, year etc., but you know that they died? Sometimes I run reports and someone born in the early 1800's turns up as living. I guess what I'm saying is--how do you let the computer know that they are no longer living? Thanks, Melanie

    3. I'd never noticed that 'Other Gedcom 5.5' option until you mentioned it, Bill. How does one know which character set to use? Thanks, Charlotte Subject: Re: [PAF-5] Burning CD for hurrican protection From: "Bill Linn" <billinn@suscom.net> Date: Tue, 21 Jun 2005 01:05:18 -0400 To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com The first step is to export your PAF-5 file to GEDCOM. I would use "Other GEDCOM 5.5" since this would be compatible with almost any genealogy program, not just PAF. After exporting you can compress it with Windows XP Zip utility or Winzip. I can't imagine a GEDCOM so large it wouldn't fit on one CD after it was zipped. Your sister would need some genealogy program to view your data. She could open the GEDCOM in a text editor but that's a pretty tough way to wade through any serious amount of genealogical data. If your "data" includes photos or links to photos you could reduce the size of the photos and convert them to jpg format and burn them to the CD also. Regards...... Bill

    3. Hi LaVerne, Unfortunately there is no uniform standard for CD-RW devices like there was for floppies, so the process of writing to a CD-ROM is not as straight forward as intuition would expect. When you insert a blank CD into your CD slot, your system should recognize that a blank CD is now available and you should see a pop up dialog box that asks you what you want to do with it. There may be several options ranging from prepare it for writing down to do nothing. If you chose to prepare it for writing, it will create a buffer in your memory where you must copy all the data you want to write to the CD. Only when you are actually ready to dump the buffer to the CD will it actually write it out. In other words, the Export a GEDCOM routine in PAF does not have the ability to recognize a CD device and cannot write directly to one. (Hence the misleading message about "path does not exist".) You will have to follow the specific instructions on your system for where to write the GEDCOM file and let your operating system handle the actual transfer to the CD. If you want to use this method, you will be forced write the GEDCOM file to some folder on your hard drive and then copy it to the buffer set up by your system. An alternative method and one that I personally prefer is to use the software package that came with your CD-RW device to copy files to the CD. So you would write the GEDCOM to a folder on your hard drive and then run something like Easy CD Creator or an equivalent program that is more user friendly to copy it to your CD. If you can tell me more about your system such as which version of windows and what program you have to run your CD R/W device, I can be more specific with these instructions. Don't be discouraged. You are one of millions who have this same confusing problem. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Burning CD for hurrican protection

    3. The simplest and most elegant way that I have found to accomplish this is to use the program Family History CD. It will allow you to put the entire PAF database on a CD, generate a "front page" for the CD and help you to burn the CD. It contains a program that will display the PAF database. Furthermore, you can add pictures and printed material. It is available from Ohanasoftware.com. If your PAF database requires three floppies to accommodate it in the backup format, then it is almost certain that you have "collected" the information from compiled genealogies. Another approach would be for you to create a PAF database that contains only your "kindred dead". This is easy to accomplish using a GEDCOM file. This reduced file would then make it possible for you to confirm the acceracy of that which you have collected. For myself, I have only "computerized" the information researched by my family since they came to America in the 1840s and 1850s. In the last 55 years I have found thousands of factual errors in their work. Sadly sometimes that has included having the wrong parents for some of them. In the latter case the information was researched by a paid professional genealogist in Scotland. Richard L. Halliday B.H. Now whenever I try to preview or print reports from PAF Companion I get the following error message. PDF Viewer We were unable to locate a default PDF viewer. I you do not have one already, you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader from http://www.adobe.com I know Adobe Acrobat is working okay since I use it to bring up PDF files all the time. Does PAF companion not support the latest version of Adobe Acrobat? Is there a way I can set the latest version as my default PDF viewer and get my reports working again? I searched under preferences and the help file and have not found anything. Thanks, Melanie

    3. Hi B.H. I'm fairly certain you can just copy the paf5 folder from the FamilySearch directory onto the CD-ROM as well as the your .paf database file. Then when your sister wants to view your PAF database, she runs the paf.exe file from the CD-ROM. It will be view only, but it appears that is what you want. If that doesn't work, I know you can run the PAF5 install process onto a flash drive and copy your PAF file as well. That can be used in a similar fashion by running the paf.exe on the flash drive. In this case, it will be read/writeable. Richard At 01:02 PM 6/20/2005 -0700, B.H. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Can I add a label to list of parent-child relationships?
    2. Gary Templeman
    3. Because the parent link applies to the marriage, not the individual, probably the best you can do is have the biological relationship in the marriage with the real father, and a guardian relationship in the subsequent marriage. Then document in the notes. The child will then be listed no matter which family you bring up. 3. Hey hey hey! I am happy to report that I managed to finally get a working copy. I did a little tree pruning (about 2,000 records) and must have gotten rid of the problematic one/ones that were messing up my file. All my sources are back, now. I think one of the GEDCOM's I got off the WorldTree must have had some really odd ball events/notes because prior to deleting that batch of records, I noticed this one line had many of the errors that the check/repair tool was reporting. Everything was scrambled in those records. The notes were so scrambled, you could hardly read them. After they were gone, things seemed to be back to normal. Whew! Thanks for your input.
