    1. RE: [PAF-5] getting submitted off 300 names
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. Barbara, This can be done in PAF with the Global Replace feature. What is not clear from your note is whether the "Submitted" phrase you want to get rid of is all that has been entered into the date field - or - whether there is a date element following the "Submitted" phrase that you want to keep. For example: The date field could contain "Submitted" and you simply want to delete that entry. (use Tools > Global Search and Replace for dates to replace "Submitted" with nothing - no entry in the Replace box) Or The date field could contain "Submitted 20 Jun 1995" and you might either want to delete "Submitted" and leave "20 Jun 1995" (use Tools > Global Search and Replace for dates to replace "Submitted " - note the space following the submitted phrase - with nothing) - or - delete the entire entry to blank out the field. (use Tools > Global Search and Replace for dates to replace "Submitted 20 Jun 1995" with nothing -- and would have to be done for each specific date used in the submitted phrase.) 3. It really depends on the software design of the installation routine. I have some programs that the installer itself will uninstall the earlier version before continuing with the new. Poorly written installations may not properly update all the program files. And of course, there may be files used by the old version that are superfluous in the new, and if you install over the top, those stay behind, as may obsolete registry entries. I have other programs where the instructions specifically say to install over the top. I think the safest course is generally to uninstall first, re-boot, then install fresh. But like Stewart, I almost never do it that way and rarely have a problem. 3. I am new to genealogy and my PAF 5.1 program. Many of my ancestors married first cousins and I just kept adding the ancestors. So I have a lot of the same people entered more that once. Finally I realized that I could just add the ancestor from "existing" I have tried to match and merge and ended up with a real mess. Double notes and double parents I know I am doing something wrong but no matter how many times I have tried I still can't get it right. Can someone please help me figure this out before I have to delete the files and start all over again. Thank-you so much --------------------------------- Yahoo! Sports Rekindle the Rivalries. 2. John Vilburn
    3. Double parents is usually caused by having two copies of the individual, with a separate but mostly identical set of parents for each individual. When you merge the individual, you then have two sets of parents. The next step is to merge the two fathers and the two mothers. That should take care of that problem. How notes are merged depends on the "Combine Notes" option in Match/Merge. I noticed that you said you have PAF 5.1. The latest version of PAF is 5.2.18. If that is not the version you are using, you should go to www.familysearch.org and get the latest. There are some significant bug fixes. For an easier time with merging, you might want to consider using PAF Insight. 3. PAF Pal has an option to remove "submitted" from all of the names in your file. It can be purchased for immediate download at www.ohanasoftware.com. It can also be purchased by mail order through www.cannonfam.org/pafpal or through www.ohanasoftware.com. Name it "Genealogy" and make sub folders, Backups, Gedcoms, Multimedia, PAF-5, and Reports. Then, go to PAF-5, Tools, Preferences and tell it where you want to keep your files under the "Folders" Tab. 2. PAF keeps most everything in 1 file. So that may be all you have. The one area of exception is if you start adding sounds, music, photos, movies, (multimedia) to your database - those files are not merged into the *.paf file. Also exported/imported GEDComs. What I'm using here to write this is 14 which is very easy & comfortable for me, but I can get along with 12 or 10; what I have real trouble with is the size that's the default on PAF5 on the family view data entry screen ,& its notes screen. I've read that you can go into preferences & get a larger font but that hasn't worked for me; it just froze up my screen and didn't make the fonts larger. On the screens I've mentioned above, I have to use a magnifying glass to see if I"ve made a mistake entering data or not. Ethel in Nebraska

    3. Hi David. The actual PAF database has the .paf file extension. There is no other database file needed when copying your database back and forth. It sounds to me like your Windows configuration is not showing that extension if you only see David Family. You can change that by changing the file configuration in Windows. The other file extensions used for the PAF system are as follows: .pal - logging changes. This is only created if you turn on the logging system. .par - report file for the submission file when creating a Temple Ready disk. .oup - temple ordinance data input file when running a Temple Ready disk in the Temple Ready program. .zip - backup file of the .paf database .lst - report files for messages, especially for errors when importing GEDCOM files. .ged - GEDCOM files .rtf - report files when sending printed reports to disk. Setting up a directory structure for your system is a personal preference. For what it is worth, here is how I have mine set up: PAF Data (top level) - PAF Master (directory for master databases) [PAF Files] - Family A (master database for family A) - Family B (master database for family B) - PAF Backup (for all .zip files) [Backup] - PAF Work (for all temporary databases where I load GEDCOMs to be verified and cleaned up) - PAF Reports (for all report files .rtf & .lst) [Reports] - GEDCOM (for all GEDCOM files coming in and going out) [Import/Export] - PAF Images (for all images) - Family A (images for family A, including photos and document images) - Family B (images for family B, including photos and document images) - PAF Web [Web Pages] - Family A (web files for family A) - Family B (web files for family B) With this format, I cannot always let PAF use the default that is set in the Preferences>Folders configuration. I have to navigate one level further when working with a specific family, or when I am working with PAF work files. My Handspring Visor Pro -- B/W, not color -- has more than 20,000 names etc. on PDA PAF software with no problem. It's about 4 years old. I'm a technodunce, and I was a bit surprised that I learned the _basics_ of using it without too much travail. There's a built-in tutorial for "Graffiti," which is the alphabet but some letters written a special way. That, too, I learned faster than I expected. You do want to practice at home, of course. I don't use the case that came with it; I wear a belt bag and it fits easily. There's a clever folding keyboard, which I confess I've never used. I recommend buying a "travel charger." 2. I have friends who swear by the Palm PDAs and other friends who swear by the Windows PDAs. Palm has been around longer but with windows you have access to the programs you run on your Regular PC. Either way, one thing I like was being able to have a docking station to plug my PDA into And have it automatically update according to the things I picked like my calendar, address book, Genealogy, etc. I think it is kind of a personal thing, I think people should go to the stores where you can hold them And look them over. Look for a county computer fair or other such things to see a wide variety of them. Also it is easy to compare things like the screens, they have a measurement in inches. You might also just want to consider one of the new super lightweight laptops.
