    2. Sherrie Apperson
    3. This is a common problem that seems obvious once you understand how it works. Programs such as PAF *CAN* *NOT* run your CD burner -- they have no ability to set up the CD burner and go through the CD burning process. You have open a CD burning program and, from there, choose the PAF (or any other) files you want to burn to the CD. I have Windows XP and I actually find it simpler to use windows than my CD-burner program (Nero) to burn my backups to CD. First I open up "My Documents" folder and browse to the files I want to back up. Then I open a NEW "My Documents" folder and browse to my CD-writer drive (in my system, it is the D:\ drive). Then I just drag the files I want to burn from their box to the D:\ box. I can continue to browse and drag files from any folder on my computer until I have dragged all the files that I want to burn to my CD. Then I simply click on the "Write these files to CD" link on the top of the left-side task bar. There are a few steps to follow, but you are told what to do at each step. Please let us know if you were successful. 2. To all those who have downloaded the GenCharts for PAF program from www.familyhistoryguide.com, make sure you also download the User's Guide for that program. This guide will give you a run down on the program and then describe each of the reports available in some detail. These unique reports are like no others you've ever seen from any genealogy program so you will want to study them thoughly to see what they provide. From the website home page, click on the "more about GenCharts" hyperlink. On the next screen, click on the hyperlink for the User's Guide. It's a free download so if you don't yet have the program, you can look at it to see if you want the program before subscribing to the website. Lynn E. Mower website owner

    2. Stewart Millar
    3. Hi Carolyn, You will need to be specific about which report you ar referring to. If you referring to the Individual Summary Report - this does list marriages for the individual but it does not list children - logic being (I suppose) that individuals do not have children - but couples do. The children will be listed in the Family Group Report for the couple concerned. A child can be linked to a set of biological parents and to a set of adoptive parents --- and will show up as a child in both family groups --- check out the "Add" - other parents feature. When printing a report for an individual does it not show that they had children? There are 3 marriages involved. One child born to the first husband, that child was adopted by the second stepfather and another child was born. This all shows up fine in family charts. Then the lady has a third marriage which none of her children show up, which should be correct. (Unless is there a way to list the children as his step-children! Don't seem to find anything about listing stepchildren.) Anyway back to the problem. When I go print a report for the lady it does not show that she has any children at all when she has 2 natural children. Shouldn't they show up on her report? Thanks in advance for your help. 1. RE: [PAF-5] Viewing secondary parents in the family view
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. Hi Melanie, One way to link to the other set of parents is to highlight the child in question on the Family screen - from the main menu ---- Search > Descendancy List --- the resultant sub-window will show both families that the child is linked to --- in this sub-window, select any other individual (i.e., one of the other parents) and press OK, will revise the Family screen to have the selected individual in the main parent position with their associated family. I find it very easy to use this to swap between family views and like a lot of PAF features, is easier in practice than the explanation! This feature is also an alternative means of navigating around your database. Good luck. 1. Re: [PAF-5] How to correct one person with two RIN numbers please.
    2. Sherrie Apperson
    3. A RIN number identifies people by giving them each their own number in your own database, a useful tool when working in the database. However, there is nothing really unique about that number because if you ever split your database or share some of your data with someone else, the RIN number will change. A different identifying number that IS unique sometimes comes up when you are merging two people, the Ancestral File Number (AFN). Because I want to know when a person is listed multiple times in the LDS Ancestral File database, I make a tagged note, "ADTNL_AFN:", and list any "additional Ancestral File Numbers" in my notes. Even though I know that the Ancestral File database is a dinosaur that is not documented and therefore unreliable, I still like to know which of my ancestors is listed there and keep their unique numbers available so I can find them in the database should I ever find the need. 3. Hi everyone - I've been through three stages in the divided database 'path' 1) had two different ones, one for my dad's family and one for my mom's. Then I began the work of going back and actually putting source data in both databases. When it became apparent that a lot of the work would be duplicate (duplicate sources, etc), I merged the two databases and now have one. I agree with the comments that one is just easier. 2) had a sep. db for my husbands family. this has actually worked out OK - all this research is in both different countries and different languages - dutch, norwegian, russian. this one is still distinct. 3) most importantly, a 'test db' where I can do merges, gedcoms, and other data-checking before I transfer it into the 'real db'. hope this helps. Considering my own family (combined single database for me and my wife) - have a look at my FH web site at www.millarweb.org --- And take a look at the "Family History" page --- there you will see that our family history is presented in two formats - a pedigree view (going back in time) and a descendancy view for each of our main end-of-line family names. The Descendancy reports presented here are generated by PAF for each of the main family names - currently 14 (7 for me and 7 for my wife's side) - these are the main means of communicating specific "family name" information with cousins having connections to the same family-name groups without being confused with any un-connected individuals/families from our other ancestral connections (what I think you are trying to achieve). This is all generated from the single PAF database. The data on the Descendancy reports can also be selected in PAF to generate gedcom files for those relatives that may want the data in a genealogical electronic format. The point made by Ross regarding one-name studies is a completely separate ball game to a personal family history data base - comparing apples and carrots, which I think he agrees with; for a personal family history I would strongly adhere to my previously stated views, namely, keep it all together in one database; as you can see from my web site, PAF can separate, analyse and report on any particular set of relations, name groups or descendancies that you are likely to need - all from one database. I hope this helps. Now, you have me thinking about that question, a bit differently!! Good comments!! My reason for wanting to do the four-way split on the one big data-base, is so that I can print each one, for 'work-sheet' hard copy purposes, or for info for (to) myself and anyone who is seeking the info on one family line, but who is not 'interested' in (kin to) any of the other lines and for whom the other 3/4ths of the total database is superfluous. Maybe you are correct, and the four parallel data bases would be problematic, but I surely had a lot of trouble using the one big one I had in the FTW files, so that had become an 'issue', whether it was just a personal 'gripe' or something a bit more real. I do understand that we each become a bit 'warped' about some idea or other, when it seems to be an alternative, and when it is not easy to actuate that idea, to then become 'frustrated' without real cause! 2. Stewart, Joe, and others who deal with a lot of descendants. If you keep track of descendants the way I do, you will appreciate the GenCharts for PAF program available at www.familyhistoryguide.com. To use this program it is best to have all your data and your spouse's data in one data file. This program will print lists and charts on the descendants of any couple in your data file (there are some limitations on the number of generations that can be printed in some cases. It prints some interesting lists and charts on the ancestors of any one in the data file also. It works only with the English version of PAF 5. It's such a neat add-on program that all PAF users should have a copy. Sorry if this sounds like an advertisement. I guess that's cause in a way it is. Lynn E. 3. Hi everyone, I didn't see that Henry Wheeler had posted his response to me to the whole list, so I thought I'd forward it on. It looks like there is a way to attach PDF files without manipulating the image or changing the file/image type. Thanks Henry! --Melanie ----Original Message Follows---- Hello Melanie, I saw your message on the mailing list. If you use the audio file feature you can attach a pdf image as a sound. Click on the "all files" at the bottom of the select box and tell PAF where you PDF file is. Also works as a video file. Henry
