    3. Hi there, Jane asked: > In PAF 4 the relationship of the person shown to the root person is found at the lower left corner of the page. > Can this be set up to show in PAF5? Sure. I don't know, if I mention the right menu titles 'cause my language version is german ... anyhow: You get the 'properties'-Dialog by Shift+Ctrl+P In the 'File' folder you'll find - right in the middle of the window - a button to 'Change ...' the display of the relationships in the status bar. Right on. Regards from Bremen, old Europe. Hans-Christian

Only one little problem; after entering new people, you have to repeat this procedure to reflect the additional relations. 3. Thanks to those who replied to my inquiry about obtaining a copy of PAF 4. I did what I should have done in the first place and visited the LDS home site on the internet. There I found PAF 4.0.4.18. It downloaded easily but so far does not recognize my five RESTORE floppies. They, of course, after all this time may be corrupted, in which case I am out of luck. On the other hand there may be still be an incompatibility problem. I plan to visit my local LDS Family History Center this week for help on solving this problem. Rogers

    3. I am new to the list and need help in recovering backup files made in 1996 with the extension .BAK. My objective is to restore them to the original PAF program from which they were made, convert them to GENCOM files, and then import them into version 5.x that I have just downloaded. I no longer have the original program (PAF 3.x or 4.x?) from which the backup files were created. Question: Where can I find the appropriate PAF program to download so that I can restore these files to it? Rogers

    2. I have a family with 2 young children who have recently (within last 2-3 years) changed their surname. How do you show this? I changed the surname on the main listing and put the original name in also known as with a note of when the name change occurred - is this correct? Also in the case of an adopted child ( an in-law)..do you just put her adopted parents in but not bother with their lineage? Fran

    1. re: Sources in PAF / Duplicate Sources
    2. Regina Barry
    3. I have alos found sources very easy to use - I've gone a bit more 'generic' with my sources - I have a source for 1900 U.S. Federal Census, with the author and NARA series number as a source - then, under the citation details I've entered roll, ED, SD, page, line - whatever. Since its attached to a Census Event that includes the location and description on the 'person', so to speak; but I include all that in the text Actual Citation. If you have duplicate sources, they were created somehow; during data entry or import of gedcoms. Make a backup of your database and try the menu path Tools, Merge Duplicate Sources and Citations - see how many you clear up. I've not found the need for an individual number for sources. Records are what they are: Census for a given region / time - 1841 Census of Great Britain, 1900 U S Federal Census The state/region Vital Records Offices are; Delware Division of Vital Records, etc - then under Citation Details and Actual Text you get - Death Certificat 123456, date issued, details etc Books have a title Microfilms of records are VA, Westmoreland County. Court Orders 1688-1690, FHL number xxxxxx - then under Citation Details and Actual Text are the details Misc - Oral Family History - then details in each citation Family Letters, Historic - then details Correspondence - then details Copies of records are Ohio, Gallia Co. Land Records etc - location is the courthouse, Citation is for a photocopy of a probate file or land file etc. Hope this helps. 3. With all the discussion about how to handle sources, it seems like a good idea to recommend the widely used book, Family History Documentation Guidelines that has been published by the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group. It can be purchased on-line from www.svcomputergenealogy.org for $12.50 which includes postage. The book contains detailed instructions on how to create your source entries plus many pages of examples of typical source entries. The illustrations are based on PAF5. Richard Rands

    3. MJ has written to me expressing his dissatisfaction with the tone of my reply - considered to be lecturing from a soap box and has caused him offence. I realise my reply was written in rather emphatic prose - reflecting my personal experience and observations of others who have tried to monitor their database via printed reports. Offence was not intended and I apologise for any taken. I do realise that each of us can find our own comfort zone in the ways and means we use to manage our database. On the specific point that MJ wanted to be addressed - I do not believe there is any procedure in PAF that can alter the sequence of printed Individual reports to have them come off in alphabetic name sequence - a possible alternative would be to use PAF Insight (see ohanasoftware.com) to change the RIN's to align with the alphabetic sequence. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Re: Backing Up Files
    2. I hope so. No matter how tired I am at the end of the day I force myself to make the four backups. I have a huge database but any loss would cause me to rethink my policy against suicide! Some friends at the FHC laugh at how I pawn copies off on just about anyone who will take them. I started at age 12 -- am now 67 -- and I am surprised by how well I documented information at that early age. Very little has had to be redone. My parents were happy to pull into the small cemeteries in the areas where family once lived and look for graves while on vacation. Genealogy is not my first love, but those who are first in my life know not to push me too far because it could replace them! Happy researching everyone Sharon in So. California

    1. RE: [PAF-5] Citations, sources
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. Bill, The Sourcing features in PAF are very good. I believe your frustration must be arising from a mishandling and misunderstanding of the setup - this is not unusual in the learning curve for something like sources - and the learning curve would even be greater in TMG! From the outset it is important to realise that there are 3 distinct parts to defining and assigning a source in PAF. 1. Definition of the Source This is a generic setup and description of the source so that it can be selected and used over and over again and applied to many different individuals. There must not be any specific information in this source definition that relates to a specific individual or event. The definition of the Source allows for a great deal of potential information to be supplied that helps to define and identify the source - in my experience, up to 90% of the potential information I usually find is not needed but is available to cover the widest range of descriptions that may be needed for a wide variety of source descriptions. I suspect that the appearance of duplicated sources in your list arises because you may have included individual/event specific information in your source definition. Examples of Sources are: - "Birth Certificate" / "Census - England & Wales - 1861" / "Parish Records - Lydiard Tregoze" / "Family Knowledge" / "Family Bible" etc. There are many preferred approaches to defining the source titles - and can be as simple or as complex as you want it - ultimately, the list of sources should be searchable (by you) as easily as possible - rule of thumb tells me that if the list grows to over 3 figures you are likely to have too many and should revise your structure of source titles - is alphabetic, so keep like sources together. 2. Repository This is not mandatory - but allows you to give the address location of where the (generic) source being described can be found (library, archive etc. - I would advise against using internet web addresses, rather - use a repository address where the real/physical source can be found). Note that only one repository can be assigned to a (generic) source title. For a source like "Family Knowledge" I would not assign a repository, but in the specific citation details (see below) I would include the details of who supplied the information but specifically omit any address information as a matter of privacy. 3. Citation Having selected a source to use for a specific individual and event you are presented with the Citation screen - this allows you to fill in specific references that describe and allow you to locate this specific occurrence of this source. For example - select the "Birth Certificate" source for the Birth event for John Doe and complete the citation details that describe the specific archive location of this certificate (date/volume/page etc.) - complete any comments relevant to this particular birth certificate (I like to put in a cross reference to my copies of source documents here) - add a transcription of the source details in the Actual Text feature if required - attach a scanned image of the source document if required. There are further "fine" details to using Sources in PAF, but the above are the essentials. My own view is that it is the addition of sources to the PAF data base that is the most exciting part of the whole genealogy experience. Good luck in working your way through it! Regards, Stewart -----Original Message----- From: Bill Williams [mailto:billwilliams25@juno.com] Sent: 25 July 2005 00:47 To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAF-5] Citations, sources I have sent a request about the subject some time ago but received no responses, I do not even see my inquiry listed. What am I doing wrong? I would like some help on how to identify my sources. I must not be using a correct title or something. When I go in to the source list I see dozens of duplicate sources listed. I am considering going over to the Master Genealogist Program as I see it assigns a number to each source. I used to enjoy giving sources in PAF 4 but in PAF 5 it seems to be very cumbersome. There must be a better way. 3. Linda, Create a fake person (or persons) that has all the sources that you want to move over. Then GEDCOM him/her to your new file. When in the new file, delete the person, the sources will remain. That will only move the data in the source that is associated with the source and not anything you might have associated with an individual.
