Hi John, I'll assume that your problem does not occur at any other time or in any other software program. And I'll assume that it does not happen every time you enter a new child. The fact that pressing ESC a few times clears up the problem, indicates that the condition you describe is caused by your machine running off in some loop somewhere that is not allowing your mouse to get an interrupt into the operating system. Pressing ESC is the brute force way of causing an interrupt to stop the loop. The cause can be a variety of things, but the bottom line is that there is some rare combination of conditions in your configuration that is causing your response to the Sex question to go off in the loop. It is probably something in the way the routines in PAF were installed and how they were linked together to form the PAF configuration. I suggest you reinstall PAF with nothing else running. You will need to go into the task manager and stop everything that is not essential before you do it. The install routine cannot possibly foresee every possible circumstance when it puts together all the routines for PAF, and you may have one that gets in the way. If this doesn't solve the problem, get back to me. In the latest version of Paf Companion available at FHCs, is there a way to make it NOT fill in the background when you print charts? A friend and I were trying to print a bow-tie chart for her daughter, and the girl's data in the middle of the bow insisted on printing white-on-black. We didn't like it because it was hard to read, so I spent about 15 minutes trying to fix it. Cheryl
The latest version of PAF Companion has a pop up dialog box for the Bow Tie Chart Options. One tab is for color. Are you trying to set NONE for the color here? And then the white and black is only for the primary person in the bow tie chart? What you can do is select one of the other options, like Gender. Which makes men blue and women pink. Then you can change the fill color for those 2 to white. When I enter a new child and try to select the sex my computer will freeze sometimes-about 8 times in the last 2 months. When I move my mouse around nothing I click on will react. I can't even close the individual screen. I've found I can get around this by hitting escape a few times. Then I it asks me to select the sex and I can proceed as normal. I never had this problem with PAF 4 which I switched from about 6 months ago. Has anyone else had this problem? John
Also, if you want detailed information, the answer can be found in the help file in a few mouse clicks. Click Help_Help Topics_Index and then type "order children" As great a resource a list like this is, I think we tend to forget about the wealth of information right at our fingertips. It is usually much faster to check the help file than compose an email and wait for replies. Though not quite standard, I do place my direct line in the first place of the children and then put all the others in order. That way it is easy for me to go through the file and keep my direct line straight. I am not advocating this for everyone, but I have found it very useful and it substantially decreases my frustration at times. I think what you are referring to is the list of recently used files that you see when you open the File menu in the upper left corner. If you have actually deleted the file, when you click on the one listed there you will probably get an error message that the file can't be found. You can just ignore those numbered listings. As you open other files, the older ones drop off the list. Since most often people want to return to a file in recent use, the numbered list is simply a shortcut for choosing one of them. The fact that a deleted file still shows on the recently used list is meaningless and will self-correct with time. "Lance" < lance.b.4u@gmail.com> You can usually find, (ctrl+f), something like this at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PAF-5-USERS/ I had do back to April to find this. Speaking of Children being out of order, I was working on a file that had lots of Match/Merge done on it and noted that there were quite a few families with the children out of order. So I wanted to find a systematic way to go through the entire file and check for all the "out-of-order" families. So I ran the Possible Problems report and saved it as a file. Then in MS Word, I resaved the report file as a Word document. I had to get rid of the word wrap problem by replacing all the paragraph/tab combinations with a space and then dumped the entire report into a table within Word. At that point I could sort the table on the error description column which put all the children-out-of-order errors together in the table. I was shocked to find many many more such errors than I expected. So I did the same thing to my own family history file and am embarrassed to admit that there were about 15 pages of these errors. Note that both the father and the mother will show up in the list, so it is only half as many errors as it seems. Also, the report treats date ranges in a way that may not be obvious, but the technique works. I suggest you try this and you too may be surprised. If you need more detailed instructions, I'll be happy to expand my description. Richard Rands
I go into family view mode, click on a parent, click on EDIT in the menu bar, select ORDER CHILDREN. A dialog box will come up, you highlight a child and then use the up and down arrows to move them into the proper place in their order. I like using a date as part of the file name and I do clean up older files when I know my new backups are safe. I do have a tendency to over save stuff because I often make CD's of my old files before I delete them. I figure that storing a few CD's as backups is a really cheap safety measure. Alan B.
How do you move the children to get the correct order according to their birthdate. I am use to using Ancestral Quest and its a bit different. Thanks for your Help, Donna
I have attached an image to a citation - no problem In 'edit photo' I have clicked 'include photo in scrapbook' But it doesn't appear in the scrapbook - can anyone suggest what I'm missing! Thank you , Rosemary, Northumberland

Hello P.A.F. users, After deleting the desired file in PAF, how does one go about deleting the numbered title(name) of the file? Checking through the index of the help file, I find no way to accomplish this and trying to lift and drag it to the "recycle bin" doesn't do the job either. Am I miss reading the instructions? or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated A frustrated PAF user. Bernie
You use the same process that has been discussed recently for several forms of backup. You should find extensive discussion over the last 2 wks on the archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/PAF-5-USERS/2005-07 Looks up the thread on Backup. Hi Everyone, Just a quick question: When I use 'memorize citation' to copy all the information to another individual - everything is copied except the image details, which I am having to re-enter each time. Is there a way to include the image as well as the 'actual text'? Thank you, Rosemary, Northumberland UK
