My old Mac 180 laptop which I bought about 10-12 years ago reads PC disks. I can't remember whether the older Mac SE reads PC disks. And my more recent Macs read PC disks. Also, I seem to recall that any data from fields in the other program that MacPAF couldn't handle, got put into the note section of MacPAF. Valerie
I have run into a problem that I've not encountered before in PAF5. I had several pointer errors when checking my database recently. First, I found the 3 individuals, deleted them and their notes; rechecked and had no pointer errors. Then I re-entered them & retyped the note information and the pointer errors reappeared. I dropped back to a previous clean backup which had no errors and restored my database. I checked this and there were no errors noted. This morning I decided to make a gedcom of this restored database. Imported that gedcom into a new database and the report located 6 errors - all bad level number. When I run a check of this new imported database, it says it is error free. What is happening and how can I fix it? Thanks for any help. Ruth in NC

Yes, there are several. In notes I use the tilda mark ~ like "~ my bank account number is 123456789" and then when you export there is a choice to include or exlude "Confidential Data". You can also insert new events and edit them so they are considered confidential and they will be excluded with that same option. I want to keep some data in Notes private so that it will not export to a Gedcom file. Is there anyway to do this? TIA Daniel G. Reinhold Ancestors and Descendants of Daniel G. Reinhold III http://www.userweb.suscom.net/~dreinhold/
The version of PAF for a MAC is PAF 2.3. The GEDCOM standard itself has been enhanced since then. You would want to do an Export to PAF 2.1-2.3 A GEDCOM file is a standard text file that can be read by either a MAC or a PC. The difficulty usually comes in regard to how to get the file there, since older MACs can not read a PC disk. Of course if you are emailing it, there should be no problem. But keep in mind some of your fields may not come through for the, since they might have been established after PAF 2.31. > From: "Dick Cazier" <dcazier@comcast.net> > Date: 2005/08/18 Thu PM 01:32:40 EDT > To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [PAF-5] GEDCOMs > > I need some advise. I need some advise. I just met a cousin who is doing genealogy and is using a Mac with the last version of PAF that was designed for use with a Mac. I'm using the latest version of PAF 5. When preparing a GEDCOM to send to her, which type of file should I use: PAF5, PAF4, etc. And are any of them readable by the Mac program. And vice versa, if she send me one created on a Mac, can my PAG 5 read it. Thanks. Dick Cazier Lakewood, Colorado
Hi Rosemary, Another way is to use the List Report - "Citations Referencing a Source" - by selecting each of the "identical" sources in turn (noting their sequence in your source list) - the report will itemise the individuals and events were each source has been used. Also, in reviewing sources - as you view the Citation - there is a "Replace" button available that lets you attribute the Citation to a different source. I have used this when I have occasionally divided a source into two (for example dividing a source for the IGI into IGI-extracted and IGI-submitted). I'd try something like this m(1) Thomas Hickman + Mary // for Mary citing Named as the event and the Quarter Sessions as the source, enter the details that appear in the session minutes m(2) unknown spouse - enter NOT MARRIED in the date field - see PAF help for further info enter George Smith Hickman bpt 1829 as the child of this union for George citing Named as the event and the Quarter Sessions as the source, enter the details that appear in the session minutes m(3) Joseph Cripps m(4) John Smith enter a named event for John Smith and date of 1829 and source as Quarter Sessions, and details as above etc - if its the same John Smith.... If they are identical, just merge them. You will fine it under the Tools menu. Hi Bill, It sounds to me as though you may have got your import & export mixed up and inadvertently "imported" your exported gedcom file back into your database. First of all - as you noted that you made a back-up of your original Williams file (2300 individuals) - you should restore this to your main database location on your hard drive. To export a gedcom file of the Jones side of the family (your mother's ancestral family) - using your master database of 2300 individuals: 1. From File > Export > select the required gedcom format (either a PAF format if the recipients will be using PAF - or - "Other Gedcom 5.5" (selecting the "ANSEL" format). On the right hand side of this export window ensure that you select all the elements that you want to include in the gecom transfer. 2. On the Filter options - select "Partial" and press the "Select" button. 3. On the "Select Individuals" window - using either the RIN or Alphabetic sequence, select/highlight your end-of-line individual on the Jones line (Humphrey Jones). 4. On the drop-down relationship filter - select "Descendants" and press the "Select" button. A secondary window will then appear asking for the number of descendant generations to include (999 default) and a tick box to include (or not) spouses (normally expect to be ticked). 5. Finish off by - pressing "OK" on the "Select Individuals" screen and the "Export" button on the Export screen to create the gedcom file. On your specific noted problem - as long as your mother is linked as a descendant of Humphrey Jones, she will appear on the selected gedcom. If any of the descendants of Humphrey Jones do not appear then there must be a problem in the parent-child relationships at some point on your database. Any other named "Jones" individuals who are not descendants of Humphrey Jones will of course, not be selected. Using the above "Descendants" selection will select everyone who has a blood relationship with Humphrey Jones (including married-in spouses - see (4) above). Using the "Ancestors" options for your mother would select all of the ancestors she has a blood relationship with - this of course would include the Jones line but also her maternal line and all other direct line ancestors (and the descendants of other ancestors if optionally selected). This may be what you want if your Jones relatives in Wales have shared ancestral lines with your mother. In the selection process you can cumulatively select various combinations of "Ancestors" and "Descendants" of the same or different individuals (!) which will give you a combined selection - say, descendants of Humphrey Jones and ancestors of your mother - but you just need to keep a clear idea of what is being selected. (This is perhaps a silly example as; given the right combination of selection option on the Ancestors selection you would pick up all the descendants of Humphrey Jones in any case). This is my first attempt to accomplish this procedure but I need to do quite a bit more of it. My original file is named Williams.PAF and includes 2300 individuals. This file includes my father's family (Williams), my mother's family (Jones), my wife's father's family (Morgan) and my wife's mother's family (Kyne). I have made four backup copies of the PAF 5.2 Williams file. I have printed out all 196 pages of the PAF 5.2 Users' Guide. After trying unsuccessfully to split out the Jones family (Using the descendants of Humphrey Jones born 1719) I called the LDS Library and obtained help but then tried to make a Jones Family.ged on a 3 1/2 floppy disk. This required another phone call to the LDS Library plus they called me back to get the procedure down correctly. I praise them for that! The Jones file ended up as 543 individuals. 1. My major problem is that while doing this it also added the 543 individuals to my 2300 individuals in the Williams file (total of 2843) creating 543 sets of Jones family duplicates in my original Williams file on the hard drive. 2. In addition I notice that it did not make a complete Jones file of all the descendants of Humphrey Jones. 3. Next, in order to include all members of the Jones families I believe that I must add the ancestors of my mother who was a Jones. What kind of problems will this produce? 4. Am I on the right track to send a complete Jones Family file to three Jones family cousins in Wales? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hi list, Since I have both Swedish and Polish ancestors I like to put the proper letters in their names and places. Until today, holding down the Control key and F6 brought up a template and I could insert the letter necessary. Suddenly it won't work. What have I done wrong? Or what do I do now? I haven't changed anything. It won't work on my old backup computer either. I wonder if anyone can advise me where and how this information is best added to PAF: Mary HICKMAN (widow) had a son - George Smith HICKMAN - baptised in 1829. At a hearing at Oxford Quarter Sessions responsibility for this child was laid at the feet of two men (the mind boggles): John SMITH and John WELLER. Since Mary gave the child the name of George SMITH HICKMAN, it would seem that she laid the 'blame' at John SMITH's door! George was born between Mary's first marriage to Thomas HICKMAN, and her second marriage to Joseph CRIPPS. Her third marriage was to John SMITH! Oy vey! This is a fun one. I would handle this by entering all three men as fathers to George and using the "Challenged" category for all three. I would enter into the notes as much as you can about the circumstances. This sounds like a DNA project in the making. Maybe blame is not right concept. Perhaps John Smith was a good man and wanted to have George named after him regardless of who the biological father was. It does happen. Thanks Richard, Gary and Lorin (?) for your suggestions. Now that you mention it I do (or did-I'm not sure if I got rid of it) occasionally have a mouse problem that may be related. Once in awhile when I'm using Internet Explorer my mouse will freeze-I can't move the arrow at all. I have to shut my computer down. When I start up the mouse will work again. And if a clean reinstall does not solve the problem, check for an updated mouse driver. I had a weird problem a few years ago where clicking a certain pattern would freeze Internet Explorer. The problem was NOT actually with IE but with the mouse driver. So just because it is PAF that is showing the problem does not necessarily mean it is the root cause. Also, to be sure ALL files and registry entries get written properly, first uninstall PAF (you will not lose your data files), reboot, then close all running programs as Richard suggested, including closing or disabling the antivirus, and then reinstall.
