I think people in the US are glued to their TVs. Most lists do not have much activity. Children returned to school this week, many people are in the first full work week until the next major US holiday. Bill, In performing a selection for a gedcom file (or any use of the Advanced Focus/Filter List) - The Relationship Filters can be used in a cumulative fashion - for example, you can select someone's ancestors then select their descendants and you will get a combined selection - you do not need to do separate selections followed by a merge. In using the Relationship Filters - Ancestors, All Ancestral Related, Descendents, All Descendants Related - you need to have a clear understanding of how they work - I have added a copy (below) of the User Guide definitions. Regards, Stewart . Ancestors. Use this relationship filter to select an individual and his or her spouse, parents, siblings, and direct-line ancestors. You can decide how many generations of ancestors, how many generations of descendants, whether to include spouses, and whether to include all parents or only the primary parents. . All Ancestors Related. Use this relationship filter to select an individual and his or her parents, siblings, and ancestors; all of the ancestors' siblings, parents, children, and spouses; and each one of those individual's ancestors. This search gives you an individual's direct line and all collateral lines. If two or more lines have intermarried, this relationship filter gives the same results as the All Related relationship filter, and it may select everyone in the .paf file. . Descendants. Use this relationship filter to select an individual and his or her descendants. You select how many generations to include and whether to include spouses. . All Descendants Related. Use this relationship filter to select an individual and his or her all descendants of the individual, and the descendants' siblings, parents, children spouses, and each one of those individual's ancestors. If two or more lines have intermarried, this relationship filter gives the same results as the All Related relationship filter, and it may select everyone in the .paf file. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Williams [mailto:billwilliams25@juno.com] Sent: 30 August 2005 02:51 To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAF-5] Merging in PAF (Or in any program) I have three cousins in Wales. Now I want to do another split using the "ancestors" of my mother (a Jones) to set up another gedcom file so that all the relations will be included. My assumption is that I would then perform a merge of the "descendants" and the "ancestors" to set up a complete Jones family gedcom file. Will this work or will one overwrite the other? They'll still change when you merge databases, but you can search on the Custom ID and still find the right people. Mind, now, you may want to put a "C" for Carolyn in front of _your_ RINs and a different letter for "H"er RINs, because your #23 is unlikely to be the same as her #23, and if you start discussing #23, it works better if you both mean the same person? The reason for the purchase is because one cousin was very apprehensive about downloading any free software and I'm not sure about the other cousin's ability to download the PAF program. Any way I was surprised myself that PAF is available for purchase for $8.00 which also includes the CD for Resources. Bill Williams
Bill W.; Merging with PAF does not need to be the same as with any other program. I very strongly urge the three of you to obtain a copy of PAF Insight and use that program. It has a feature specifically tailored for the purpose of coordinating work between researchers. Instead of using GEDCOM files to coordinate your work, simply send a copy of the entire database. PAF Insight allows one to copy information from one PAF database into another PAF database. I have used the PAF Merge feature to do hundreds of merges in the past. I almost never use it now that I have PAF Insight. PAF Insight identifies possible matches between two databases and assigns a figure of merit to that match. It labels this figure of merit "Percentage Match", but it is not an actual percentage. However, when it finds Individual Records (RINS) in two different databases which have the same PAF ID, it automatically assigns the percentage as 99 or perfect match. The PAF ID of which I speak is assigned when an individual record is created. It is unique world wide, to a very high degree of probability. Consequently all of those individuals who you send to your cousins will have Unique PAF IDs already assigned. If they are sent back to you, either in a PAF Backup file or a PAF generated GEDCOM file, those Unique PAF IDs will be retained. PAF Insight can be downloaded from Ohana Software at "ohanasoftware.com" for US $20.00 (and this includes three yeas of free downloads when there are upgrades). PAF Insight is also the best way to identify possible duplicate entries within a database and by far the best way to search the IIGI that is available. It has a few other features such as fixing more pointer errors in PAF than the PAF program can fix and it easily reassigns RINs (without changing the Unique PAF IDs). Richard L. It sounds like you are trying to use RINs for things they are not meant for. When you import her GEDCOM, the RINs will be generated for her data as the import is done. All of the records will have new RINs. GEDCOMs do not contain RINs, but they are used by the program to keep track of things locally (not a permanent part of the records). If you were to export your data to a GEDCOM and then import that into a new database, an entirely new set of RINs would be generated. They are useful for some short term applications like merging, but should not be used as a permanent part of a record (not unless you don't mind being disappointed sometime in the future when they all change). This was discussed quite a bit several weeks back. The general conclusion should be that they can be useful for various short-term needs, such as merging, but should not be looked at as a part of the record in the long term. Strange. PAF 5.2 is free as a download. I assume that the purchase was for the CD distribution - a nominal charge with some extra goodies as I understand it. The merge would generally be done within PAF by importing the gedcoms. They will not overwrite data, but create duplicates if there are such. In that case you would need to run a merge to combine duplicates. I am not sure that answers your question, but it is my try. The 'Merge' command appears to work only with one person at a time, but I wanted to do the whole thing in one 'swell foop'!! Is there a way to do it, or am I hoping for too much!!?!?!? Have you looked at the Match-Merge function on PAF Insight? It does not work in one "Fell Swoop," but it does allow you to do matches for your whole file at one sitting and has some advantages over PAF in that you do not duplicate spouses when you do the match. If you are not aware, you can download "PAF Insight" at Ohanasoftware.com for $20 and it has 5 different functions for working with your PAF files (including Match-Merge). Good luck! Alan B.

I have made several starts on a program that would do weighted matching including matching relationship scores as part of the match score for an individual. But I have never finished the program. I had a PAF4 version that would do the matching and plant fake AFNs so that PAF could merge them on a wholesale basis but I never got the merge part built into my program. I was going to have it save the differences in notes so there would be no info lost. Once you have the data merged, if you split it or send a copy to someone else and they send back the whole thing with their modifications, there is a way to re-merge everything that is unmodified. But 'no' there is no way to match everybody up unless they all have AFNs. If they have AFNs or UIDs and are EXACT matches you can get merge to zip them all together in one fell swoop.

My question is how do you get a PAF file on a Microsoft PDA? I cannot answer for a Microsoft PDA, but if they will accept a Palm OS "addin file" (.PRC or .PDB) you can get your PAF file on your PDA (I feel like a government employee). Start PAF with the file you want exported. Go to File>Export>Export for Palm OS handhelds (click on the radio button for this category). Choose "All" or "Partial." If you choose all, a dialog box comes up asking about Ansii characters or something. I just say OK because my file does not contain any strange characters. A .pdb file is placed in my Palm Addin directory (the export program apparently knows where to look for that). You many need to observe where your file is put since you are not using a Palm and then put it into the directory it needs to be to uploaded to your PDA. Once the file is in that directory, the next time you update your PDA your PAF database will automatically be added to your PDA. You do not need PAF on the PDA to read the file, you have just exported a database file just as you would do for a calendar or for the D&C, etc, files that you have in your PDA. So if the Microsoft PDA is like the Palm OS, then the process is really simple. Alan B.
There is a program called The Pocket Genealogist from Northern Hills Software (I believe) that will take a gedcom from any program. The program also allows changes to be made in the field (not like the PAF PDA program), a gedcom exported and then reimported into the main program. So far, it has performed flawlessly for me. In addition, it allows direct synchronizatiuon between the Pocket Genealogist and some desktop programs such as Legacy and TMG.
