    2. Richard Rands
    3. Hi Dot, Your message is a bit too terse to know exactly what is wrong. Firstly, you may be confusing the program with the database. Your PAF program is the software that manages your PAF database. The two are different things. It is most likely that your PAF database has been copied from a CD or some other read-only device. If it has every been stored on a read-only device, Windows will automatically set the read-only flag in the file properties and the only way it can be set to read-write is for you to turn off the read-only flag. You will have to clear it yourself using Windows. Right click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Select the Explore option which is the Microsoft Explorer program (not to be confused with the Microsoft Internet Explorer). Then navigate to the file on your hard drive. Right click on the file name to open the file management pop-up box. At the bottom is an option to open the file's Properties window. Select the General tab at the top of the window. At the bottom is a section labelled Attributes with a couple of boxes. Uncheck the Ready-only box and click OK. If you have any further questions, let me know. 3. I am trying to figure out what is happening with my pda file when I transfer it. I use Brothers Keeper as my main genealogy program. But, us PAF 5.2 with it's pda feature to transfer to my pda. I transfered 5894 people from BK to PAF. All 5894 people end up in PAF. But, when I do the export to my pda, I end up with only 5691 people. Any ideas if I might be doing something wrong in the transfer, or how I could quickly identify who it is that's missing? I can do an alpha list on my pda screen of the names and and alpha list from either BK or PAF, but to look through 5894 names comparing screens is difficult. I did check to see if the latest names I've entered were there. Of the 10 I checked, none were. Then, I went to check a name 20 back from the 5691 accepted and it wasn't there either. Anyway, before I spend hours comparing screens, thought someone might have some ideas as to why this keeps happening. The transfer did complete successfully, too. Patty

    3. John, It should be mentioned that after you set up the custom report, you then go to the button that says "sort" and have the report sorted on birthdate. The "sort" button allows you to chose what fields you want to sort the report by. You can also sort the names by first name and surname. I just recently did a birthdate sort to group family children together. Those without dates show up on the report first. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Rands" <rrands@cfmc.com> To: <PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 12, 2005 2:02 PM Subject: Re: [PAF-5] Sorting individuals > Hi John, > Yes. You will need to know how to use the Advanced Focus/Filter process to select the individuals that meet the various criteria, but it should not be hard. If you have never used the Focus/Filter process, let me know and I will give you some instructions to do one of these reports. 1. A report about the FGS Conference in SLC
    2. Richard Rands
    3. Hi folks, Janet and I spend last week in Salt Lake City attending the FGS Conference. There were some interesting items that I think many of you will be excited about. The major announcement (in my opinion) is the new FamilySearchIndexing system that was introduced and demonstrated at the exhibition. It is a new Internet based extraction system that will be available to anyone who has access to the Internet. It is designed to engage as many people worldwide as possible to participate in indexing the millions of microfilmed records that the LDS Church is now busily digitizing. It is very similar to the off-line system in use now by LDS Church members to extract names from old records, but now it will be available to anyone who can get access to the Internet. Check out the web site that explains more about it: www.familysearchindexing.com There was a sneak peek at the new online genealogy system they are developing, but it was so limited that it was hard to get much of a grasp of the overall system. The only part they demonstrated was how people can collaborate on their family history files through the Internet. The demo was done at a large plenary session by two of the high level managers, and when we chatted with one of the developers at a lunch, we were told that the demo was not the latest version and was so limited that it left more questions than answers. In any case, it was useful to note that they have at least one small part of the new system in alpha test. The Family History Library department have two files that I consider useful that they have released to the public. The first is a file of over 9,000 favorite web sites connected in an index that lets you find the links in a logical manner. There are two version of the file available, but you have to go to the library in Salt Lake City to download them. The first version is a flat HTML file with all the links in an indented format with the index built in. The second is an interactive version that allows you to mouse over the index titles and drill down to the sites in a logical manner. The first file is relatively small (2.8 mb), but it requires you to use the FIND feature in Windows to locate what you are looking for. The second file is huge (35.5mb), but is significantly more user friendly. The Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group has received permission from the LDS Church to distribute these files. You will be able to download the first version as an executable install file from our web site in a few days. If you prefer the larger file, we make it available on a 128MB Flash Drive for $20 (our cost). The second file they have released is the product of what they call the English Jurisdictions Project. It is an Excel spreadsheet with vital details about every single English parish that has ever existed. There are something like 12,325 parishes listed with all sorts of useful information about each one. If you are researching wills in a certain parish, this file will tell you which court had jurisdiction. You can see variant spellings, the Poor Law Union, the Dioceses, whether it was a market town, non-conformist records, etc. There are 15 columns for each parish. They are still working out details for how to distribute the spreadsheet to non-Excel users, but in the meantime they have decided to give it out for Excel users. We will have the file available for download on our web site in a zipped format in a few days. We have not been given permission to distribute PAF pre-installed on the flash drives, but you will be able to get the instructions on our web site on how to perform an install PAF on a flash drive. Doing so will allow you to run PAF on any PC without the need to install PAF on that PC. Our Web site is: www.svcomputergenealogy.org and the old site name will still get you there: www.svpafug.org Finally, for those of you who expressed interest in the Alan Mann seminar we held on Saturday on Innovations in British On-Line Research, we will be making the syllabus available on our web site in the next couple days. A spiral bound hard copy will be available for $3.00 plus postage cost. Janet, our fantastic web master is working hard to get all this good stuff up onto the site as quickly as possible. One last note... a very sad one. Some of you may have used our Dr. PAF service to get answers to difficult PAF problems. Dr. PAF has been a feature of our newsletter PASTFinder (formerly PAFinder) for many many years, and on-line for the past few years. The dedicated board member who served as Dr. PAF was Mary Lou Harline. Mary Lou suffered a massive cerebral aneurism while on an Alaskan cruise last week and died after being airlifted to Seattle. We are devastated by her loss. She was a major contributor for many projects from the beginning of our group, including the Family History Documentation Guidelines. If you are interested in details about her funeral (in Orem, Utah on Wednesday) or in the Memorial Service (in Cupertino, California on Saturday) please let me know. Richard Rands

    3. Hi Marilyn, GEDCOM is not a variation on the Windows SAVE AS function. It is an EXTRACTION process built into PAF. Use the FILE menu and select EXPORT. There you will go through several steps to determine which records you wish to extract into a GEDCOM file. You may chose ALL or a portion of your file. By the way, the PAF5Englishsetup.exe program is the installation program that installs the PAF5 program onto your computer. So you have been actually putting your data into the PAF5 program. That's just a small distinction, but might make things clearer. 3. Stewart, I've tried this out and changed it slightly so that the events in the 'Book Report' appear in chronological order. Adding a date to the Individual Event for 'Christening' deals with this. :-) So now, at the top of the list of 'Other Events' in the Individual Edit screen I have a christening item, accepting a date and a description. I have used the 'date only' field for this text: "At his christening %4 he was described as %6%3." and the 'no date or place' field for this text: "At his christening he was described as %6%3." Do I leave the other fields blank? (Using %1 or %2 gives He or She with a capital letter in the middle of the sentence. Am I being too fussy?) >> On standard reports you get two christening events reported (only when the >> description field has been used) - but with blank date and place for the >> second one that has the description. >> >> It seems clear to me that there are two Christening events separately >> identified within the coding - one a "system" event and one a "custom" event >> - but both accessing the same event definition - I hesitate to think what an >> exchanged gedcom file will make of this. I have tried your suggestion and it works, but it does look a little odd :-) (Just in case you were wondering, I did back up everything before I started messing around!) > However, fundamentally - why do this? I'm not sure I can construct a reason > for having a description attached to all christening events - personally, I > would prefer to add any description details, as and when appropriate, to a > tagged note for any particular christening. I want to be able to add extra details such as 'son of Mary' or 'brought to church ...' and so on so that they print in 'book' style. If I add this information as a separate 'christening event' it is displayed after the main information about the individual, and I was hoping to be able to include it with the rest of the christening details. Unfortunately, this doesn't work even using 'Christening - Description'. Could I get this result using a tag? Thanks again for your time, Rosemary

    1. RE: [PAF-5] Adding an extra field to an event
    2. Stewart Millar
    3. Hi Rosemary, There are certain things in PAF at this level of manipulation are difficult to describe and make sense of - from a program design perspective. What you want to do can be done - but not with as neat a final result. Allowing your modification to the Christening Event to include the description to stand. In creating your special template - move (drag and drop) the Christening event from the "EVENTS" section - which will not have the description field attached to it (don't ask!) - Not from the OTHER EVENTS section. Then, from the "OTHER EVENTS" you will find the "Christening - Description" event (initially, this will be found as a sub-heading under "Christening" - but if you switch it backwards and forwards - it creates its own event - please don't ask!!) which you should drag and drop (only the description field) onto the christening event you had previously moved to your new template, The end result is that you will have a "Christening - Description" event as a sub event to your Christening - for appearances sake, it is unfortunate that it treats this as a separate event - with a bold title that I cannot see how to modify and with its own source button, which of course you do not have to use ------- AND all your previous christening data will be displayed. It really has the feel of programming development stopped in the middle of this type of manipulation. Maybe someone else has a better explanation or work-around to this. However, fundamentally - why do this? I'm not sure I can construct a reason for having a description attached to all christening events - personally, I would prefer to add any description details, as and when appropriate, to a tagged note for any particular christening.
