All; When we were Beta Testing PAF 5 I noticed the Search feature (fifth item on the command line) at the top of the PAF screen. My initial reaction to it was negative. I questioned its value. After all, I reasoned, who wants to do a general search on the FamilySearch Internet site? Later I noticed that PAF Pal has the capeability to add three additional sites (Ancestry.com, Genealogy.com and RootsWeb.com) to that list. Again my reaction was negative. This year two things happened that changed my mind about that feature. Shortly after my wife died I began to "update" her PAF file by transferring the source citations from the Notes to the Sources. The other thing was that I taught a number of classes to those individuals who were called to serve as Ward Family History Consultants. I now regard the Search feature as a very valuable tool in both of those endeavors. For those working on the Gift of Family History this is a very helpful short cut to doing a survey of resources for an individual. All that is necessary is to highlight the individual for whom a survey is desired and then select Search and then Ancestry.com (either at the FHC or at home if you have a subscription to that service). A search of all of the databases is then displayed together with a rating. The rating (one star to five stars) is a good indicator of the quality of the possible match. This feature has saved me many hours of searching the individual censuses, death indexes, etc. The displayed list can then be copied (using the Print Screen button) and pasted into a word processor (WordPerfect is best, but Microsoft's Word will work, albeit with more difficulty) where it can be printed for inclusion in the packet. For updating my wife's family file it allows me to automate the search of the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses. Have any of you "found" this feature as helpful as I have? Richard L. Hello, all. How do I 'package' a single family groups sheet out of this PAF 5 program, to send it as an attachment?? The GEDCOM is much more info than the other person wants, and I do not care to send it all about, just for fun!! And I do not see any instructions for such a format, so I hope someone there, in this audience, can assist me with this problem!! Thanks to all!! I have been SOOO hoping that this would be incorporated into a new version of PAF at some point! In instances where a person is calculated as a 7th cousin AND a 5th cousin, it would be very useful to figure out why (or why not) this is the case; but in all instances it would be most useful. Hi Joe. In the Print Reports feature, check the Print to File feature near the bottom right side. When you print a family group report, it will ask for a file name. Then attach that file to your message. The recipient will get a .rtf file that will require a word processor that accepts .rtf file formats. Most do, so that should not be a problem. Make sure they use the View Print format in the View menu. This needs to be put on your program as so many people want to know how you are related to the ancestors on my WEB SITE. So easy to just calculate and print to file and email to them. What a valuable addition. Donna

I received a question off line regarding uploading web pages. I was hoping someone on this list might take some time and make a good tutorial on the best way to get the web pages that PAF generates posted online - including the pictures they have linked. Issues that would be good to include are the best way to organize the photos on the hard drive (naming and directory structure), how to use relative addressing with the web hosting service, and uploading the whole package and getting the index page that PAF makes linked up to the person's home page that the service might create. And of course any other details and pitfalls you can think of. I know some of the basics but not enough to guide someone else. Gary Templeman
SH, Larry and Clive Thanks so much for your help. I had a try the way SH suggested. I'm amazed with myself that I didn't pick this up anyway! Clive and Larry, the filters were excellent. I've had a bit of a try with this advanced search filter before, but got nowhere fast. I think, now, I have a better chance. Hi Donna, Use the Custom Report feature with a Field Filter that looks like: LDS Baptism Date Contains Cleared OR Endowment Date Contains Cleared OR Sealed to Parents Date Contains Cleared OR Sealed to Spouse Date Contains Cleared OR LDS Baptism Date Contains Submitted OR Endowment Date Contains Submitted OR Sealed to Parents Date Contains Submitted OR Sealed to Spouse Date Contains Submitted Richard Rands At 09:59 PM 9/20/2005, Donna Autrey wrote: >Is there anyway you can make a print out of all the names that have >Submitted or Cleared in the Ordinance Fields. > >Input please. >Donna > >==== PAF-5-USERS Mailing List ==== >PAF-5-USERS Mailing List >http://www.ausbdm.org/p5uindex.php
Hello I'm hoping someone will be able to help me. I'm trying to learn how to search for people who were born or died in a particular town. For example. I want to find all the people in my file who were born (or married or died) in Dubbo. The surname is irrelevant, as there would be more than one, and with the size of my file now, I can't scroll down the individual window any more. How do I go about doing this? thanks in advance regards Regina Genealogical information is at: http://www.gencircles.com/users/regina1/4 No longer maintain my website. May put up another one one day. You can go to reports, lists, places and preview. This will sort all places alphabetically. If you list only the county in your data base, the county is where the people "are." I'm sure you can also make a custom list. This one works great. SH
here is how I would do this. create an advanced filter. start with the menu item of Search\individual. this will open a find individual window. next you want to click on the advanced>> button. and then on the field filter define button here is where you create the filter. I would suggest using the anyplace field, select it and click on the > button, this will pop up a field filter window and you will need to select a radio button of which part of the place and the select the type of match. this combo box drop down has many option and then a value/text field. once you have created the field filter, click the ok in the field filtering window and the filtering has happened. those individuals which pass the filter are highlighted with a ">". to just show those individuals check the filtered list show results only and you have your list. using this list you can create a custom report to print the individuals. hope this points you in the right direction. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Regina Craig" <regina_craig@yahoo.com.au> To: <PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 20, 2005 9:43 PM Subject: [PAF-5] Search for towns > Hello > I'm hoping someone will be able to help me. > I'm trying to learn how to search for people who were > born or died in a particular town. > For example. Is there anyway you can make a print out of all the names that have Submitted or Cleared in the Ordinance Fields. Input please. Donna
John, In using the Relationship-Indicators --- every time you either add new individuals to your database - or - want to show the relationships based on a different individual (ie, your sister then her grandson), you need to re-generate the relationships from Tools > Preferences > Relationship Indicators, selecting the individual on whom the relationships should be based. Thanks Stewart and Richard. I wouldn't have figured out that I needed to re-generate the relationship but I now have and it works perfectly. Hi John, There seems to be a misunderstanding about relationships in PAF. The relationship field is not a dynamic field. It is calculated using an option in the Tools>Preferences menu and remains with that value until the calculation is rerun. When you run the calculation, it calculates the relationship based on a specific individual and stays that way until rerun. When you use the Focus/Filter to select people, the relationship field is not recalculated. If you want to have a report with relationships to the grandson, you will have to run the relationship feature as an independent step. I cannot use my PaF program except for read write access only. The program will not even accept my back up copy. Could any one tell me what could be wrong. Thanks Dot
