    1. Computer Problem
    2. Bill Williams
    3. Hi Jill / Claudia What ever you do don't return your new computer. You don't describe your old computer and it's operating system. The manufacturer's name means nothing. They are all made in Taiwan or China now anyway, even the IBM's. It's the operating system that's important. You are now using a Microsoft Windows XP operating system. All computers made in the last three years are using this operating system so you will not find it any easier changing to a different model computer. If you were using an old DOS system or even the first Windows system it's like driving a 1940's car. You would not take back a 2005 car would you? Gary Templeman has given you the right advice. Call your local or county library, your high school, your county college, your county vocational school and ask them to send you the adult education, or introductory course directories. Some of these schools may even have on line courses available. First, choose an introductory course in Windows, (the operating system) and next select a course in what ever program, (application) you plan to use. Also, click on the start button to bring up the menu where you will find "Help and support" by Microsoft. Here you will find answers to many of your questions. Any new software that you purchase will usually require an up to date computer. If you really need to use 3 1/2 floppies take your computer and have an "A" drive installed but even the CD's will become obsolete in the near future, to be out dated by the no moving parts (Flash Memory) such as is used in all the latest digital cameras. I wonder why you are looking for general computer help with the PAF-5 Users. I see that you are on the cutting edge with PAF genealogy program. Bill Williams

    3. Jill, before you return the PC, pay a visit to this HP site. There is a lot of advice there and links to manuals you can download: http://tinyurl.com/8h2zy They may be of some assistance. The HP m7067c model seems to be orientated towards media and may not be exactly your "cup of tea" (mine neither :-)). I would guess that the salesman has "upsized" (as they say at McDonald's) your original request, to a model you could have done without. HP do make less sophisticated machines so if you have no success with this one, they may be able to exchange it for something more useful to you. HP allow you to customize any model. For example, this model - a1130e - is less daunting than your present HP m7067c. If you look at this page - http://tinyurl.com/dsgvm and click CUSTOMIZE - you will see you can add a floppy drive for an extra $20 to the a1130e. I should imagine that would apply to the m7067c also. Next time you visit the store you purchased it from, talk to a different salesperson, preferably the owner/manager. 3. It depends on what you mean by simple. In some ways the newer computers are easier to use BUT they are certainly different from the old DOS days. I never could keep straight all the DOS command line stuff. Every DOS program seemed to be set up differently. The newer programs usually have a layout that has some visual consistency - like the menu placement and options for, save, open, edit, etc. So once you learn the basic Windows structure you can find your way around most programs pretty easily. At the same time, the newer computers have so much more horsepower that the programs written for them have also gotten more complex and have more options. Floppy drives are going the way of the dinosaur because floppies themselves are obsolete. They are big for the small amount of data they can hold (1.44 MB) and are relatively easy to damage. If you really need a floppy drive, there are external ones that will plug into the USB port. Sending the new computer back and staying with the obsolete has it's own problems, such as not being able to repair it when hardware eventually fails or not being able to migrate important data as the software advances. I think the best option is to go someplace such as the local high school, community college or senior center that provides adult education classes and take a basic computer class in Windows. Once you have a good handle on Windows basics, most programs will have enough similarity that you will be able to muddle through them . 1. Re: [PAF-5] Paf printer problem
    2. Gary Templeman
    3. Continuing with Lorin's comments, if you have a new computer you may still need to install your printer. (If the printer and computer came as a package it may be pre-installed) If you do not know how to do that we can help, but you need to tell us the printer model, whether it will use the USB cable or the parallel cable connection, and ideally what Dell you have and what operating system (probably XP). The USB printers usually have a specific order you need to follow to install them, using the installation disk that came with the printer. Windows will generally have the drivers built in for many older printers but you still need to install them so Windows knows what printer you have hooked up. 3. Thanks to all of for responding to my post. I am new here so a little of my background: The old man has been swinging a mouse since Microsoft's very first version of windows, ( worked with computers since 1967, it was my profession.) Currently own 4 computers, none of them older than 7 months, bleeding edge technology, all of them different. I have owned and used just about every genealogy program out there, the first one I used prompted me to write one of my own, which I did and used for a while but the tools of the time, Microsoft' s "C" library killed that project. There were just too many problems with the memory management. I then kept on buying different programs as they hit the market and upgrading them as the upgrades came available. On a field trip to Salt Lake in 2000 for some research I bought a CD with PAF on it and it was love at first usage. I have not bought a single update for any of the other programs since that time. Nor have I used one except for some reporting features that I was used to. Current version of PAF in use: 5.2.18.0 The problem with the Sex field may just be a quirk of mine ( a personal problem so to say ), everyone has their own way ( not necessarily the right way ) of doing things. After entering a name, I take the mouse into my right hand, why I do not know it is automatic, my guess is, that I do it to swat the pop ups, name confirmation and marriage info. , any way I use the mouse to set the Sex field. I have seen this happen on all four of my computers, so it is not hardware related. When it happens and the selection window is left open, I cannot close it by clicking on the selection box itself, there is no reaction. I have to go to some other field and click to change the focus to that field, at that time the selection box closes. Oh yes, when it closes it is marked "Female" so I did have the mouse on the right spot when I clicked. Now can I reproduce it, just tried it twenty times, didn't happen once, but when I am entering real data it occurs often. Granted I do use the heck out of it, have a huge database and it grows daily. Thanks for the update on what the LDS Church's direction and motivation is concerning PAF. Hope they build in strong peer to peer usage, I see this as the future for genealogy research, also the way to keep commercial interests out of genealogy, keeping it free for all. After all, they are our ancestors, why should we have to pay to find out about them? Back and Forwards functionality, nothing more than an additional navigation help, a ring counter if you prefer. Different from using the arrows on the screen that are now there. I use PAF lots and use it to study the subjects in the database. While navigating, it is easy to get lost, say for example I go back four generations on a specific branch of a family, look at some data and want to return where I came from. Now let us say there was two individuals that I passed on the way back that had married more than once, I get lost every single time just trying to navigate back to were I came from using the arrows on the screen. I usually have to revert to Search -> Individual List to get back, and by this time my train of thought is gone. It would also be a cure for the rather inelegant method of handling database position when you go to an individual and delete it, now, you wind up somewhere in the database, totally undefined as it appears. As to the copy and paste not functioning on the Relationship calculator, that is what I thought. I always called this "artificial limits" that a programmer created. We have another "artificial limit" in PAF as well, that is on the number of places that are remembered, sure wish it was not as short as it is currently, if asked how big it should be, I would have to say "can we configure it", I'm sure everyone would want a different number. Would also be nice if the Burial place was in a separate buffer from the other places. Best regards, Dave Vaughan

    3. When adding a new individual and selecting the sex, why does the selector box hang open so often when I select Female? It closes when I click in anothen field, but it is annoying as it covers the birth field, the next logical place I want to go to. Also very often I select Female and it closes with unknown selected although it looks as if I had the mouse on Female. I can live with it, but find it annoying. It may just be me, but I sure see it often. On the relationship calculator why can I not select the text in the "Line of descent to Common Ancestor" window as to be able to cut and paste it into another document. It works on the calculated window. I am new to the forum: Will there be a next version of PAF? Does it do any good to have items for a wish list? If so: Wish list: Forwards button Back button (Would really be good especialy after deleting a person) Don't get me wrong, I like the programm, it is so much better than all of the others that I have paid lots of money for in the past. 3. Hi Dave, Welcome to the group. I hope you will find it a fruitful resource. At 08:41 PM 9/27/2005 +0200, Dave Vaughan wrote: >When adding a new individual and selecting the sex, why does the selector box >hang open so often when I select Female? It may just be me, but I sure see it often. I may be misunderstanding your description of how the sex field is working, but I suspect that you may not be using it correctly. When the sex field is active, that is when you click on the field and the down arrow appears at the right of the field, you have two choices of how to fill in the sex. 1. You can just type one of the letters, M, F, or U and it will automatically set the sex accordingly. 2. You can click on the down arrow to pull down the list of choices. If you put your mouse on one of the choices, it will be highlighted but that does NOT select that sex until you click on the highlighted value. If you move your mouse outside of the pull down menu without clicking on one of the options, it will not update the field. It sounds like you have been clicking outside the pull down menu rather than clicking on one of the choices. If this is not the case, let me know. >On the relationship calculator why can I not select the text in the "Line of >descent to Common Ancestor" window as to be able to cut and paste it into >another document. It works on the calculated window. This is a case of a poor programming decision. The ability to select a range of text requires the programmer to include some special Microsoft code in the window to enable the user to select a range of text. It is not a default for every section of a screen to allow the copy or cut and paste function. The programmers probably looked at the line of descent to common ancestor area and decided that it would take too much time to add the necessary code, or they assumed no one would ever want that list. I can only guess what made them omit the necessary code to allow that feature. >I am new to the forum: > >Will there be a next version of PAF? At this point, the LDS Church has indicated that there will not be any enhancements to the current version of PAF. They have been working fast and furious on a new type of family history database system that they expect will move us into a new environment. About all I can say is that it is likely to be Internet based. A tiny smattering of the new system was demonstrated at the recent FGS Conference in Salt Lake City. It showed how users can collaborate over their conflicting versions of a family history database on-line over the Internet. They gave no concrete idea of how much longer it will be before the rest of the system will be introduced. >Does it do any good to have items for a wish list? In my opinion, a wish list is invaluable. It is my hope that someone will see the light and decide that PAF is too valuable to let stagnate. It is not outside the realm of possibility that they could change their mind and reopen the development of a PAF6. If I win the lottery, that's precisely what I would do. >If so: >Wish list: >Forwards button >Back button (Would really be good especialy after deleting a person) You would need to be more specific than this. A forwards button is a browser feature which implies a program running on the Internet. I'm not sure what you have in mind here. A back button is also a browser feature, but in a Windows environment is the same as an UNDO button. I can see that as a valuable function. >Don't get me wrong, I like the programm, it is so much better than all of the >others that I have paid lots of money for in the past. This hits at the root of the problem. There is a lot of competition in the genealogy software market. The last I counted, there are over 35 competing programs available. The LDS Church is uncomfortable being involved in a competitive market, especially when they do not charge for their program. And they are equally uncomfortable charging for the product because that would create a barrier for some of the members of the Church to use the software. Their research has shown that PAF is a bit too complicated for a large number of people the program is targeted for, so they are trying to find a more user friendly and engaging concept for managing family history data. They also want to make it more universal so that data can be readily shared worldwide. The project underway by the LDS Church is enormous and is very likely to produce a system that will take us into the next era of family history record management. 2. I have not seen that behaviour on any other computer (and I have used PAF on lots), so my guess is it is something specific to your computer and not PAF itself. Do you have the most recent mouse driver and video driver installed?
