If you just want to send a file of your data to someone who does _not_ have a genealogy program, you could create a report, say a descendants report and include all or just certain descendants. I believe you can save it as a word processing file, or perhaps a rtf file, or you could even save it as html/web page (if they have browser software which is downloadable for free, they can open it). I don't thing PAF creates a PDF file, but perhaps your word processing file can create one. They then could open it with the free downloadable Adobe Acrobat Reader and print it out. Also, I think there is a free or relatively inexpensive program which you can download or order, that will convert a word processing file to PDF, but I'm not sure. Valerie Gibbs

    3. I endorse Stu's comments about the dangers of managing multiple copies of a database. While having a network makes what Stu recommends much easier, his comments are just as viable without a network. It is imperative to consider one of the copies the Master file, and all others subordinate. I too have my laptop version designated as the master database because it is where I do most of my updates. When I travel, it goes with me so I can update new research. I commute daily and work on it on the train. I never make changes to the other copies unless there is a compelling reason, and then only after I have made absolutely certain that the latest version of the master has been downloaded to that machine or the flash drive. As soon as I have finished updating a non-master copy, I upload it back to the Master copy so they are back in synch. A friend does this same thing, and to make it clear which copy is the current master, she has a tiny little rubber animal figure that she puts on the machine that contains the current master. By moving the toy figure back and forth between her laptop and her PC she knows which version is the master. You can also accomplish this by having the Last Update date and time displayed in your Explore program. 3. Using multiple copies of a database is fraught with danger. I speak from experience as I have juggled laptops and multiple desktops. Even if you have synchronization software, you can get yourself caught making changes or additions to both and end up with a mess. This is more true of databases where the changes are made immediately. Windows used to have the briefcase for keeping multiple databases, but it was cumbersome and one of the first things I removed. I use a single database (.paf file) across a network. I have the PAF program installed on each machine for convenience, but the database is on the laptop hard drive. I use the laptop drive as I take the laptop to do research and make changes to the database on the road. I make frequent backups, both to cd and other drives. This way I only open the one database with the PAF program on whatever computer I happen to be on and no matter which machine I am on the changes will be available at all machines. PAF will not open a database that is already open, so if you leave it open it cannot be accessed on another computer. This works well for me, and I use the network in a similar way for many applications. Stu At 07:05 PM 10/10/2005, you wrote: >I am using PAF 5 on my PC. 3. Hi Ruth, I haven't seen any response to your query, so I'll offer some thoughts. Your question is a bit confusing because you indicate your want to download the latest PAF to your PC, laptop, and a flash drive, but you don't specify if you mean the program or the database. If you plan to install PAF 5 onto a flash drive, you should do it before you install PAF onto your laptop, because the PAF install program will not allow you to install on a flash drive if you have already installed it on the host machine. If this is confusing to you, let me know and I'll send you some detailed instructions. If you are actually talking about downloading your database, then I recommend that you use the same file name for all three of your copies of the database, and always have one of them your master. Whenever you make changes to any of the other two, restore that copy back to your master and the third copy. Never ever make unique changes to two different copies and then restore them to the third. That will nullify the changes to at least one of the copies. I would recommend getting a copy of PAF Insights so that you can compare your copies every once in awhile to make sure they are in synch. Hi Patricia, This is sort of an ambiguous question because you don't indicate what your relative plans to do with the Word doc when he or she gets it. The standard method of handling genealogy data outside of a computer database is to have a big stack of pedigree charts and family group records. So if your relative just wants to have a copy of your PAF file, you can generate the pedigree charts and family group records as reports sent to a file, and then send them to your relative. They can be printed out on hard copy, or displayed on the screen as rtf files in Word. However, if your relative does plan to import your PAF data into a computer program, chances are he or she is using a program that has GEDCOM and just is not aware of how to access it. Some of the programs don't explicitly call their import routine by the name of GEDCOM. Perhaps a little more info will make it easier to answer your question. Richard Rands

    3. Your problem may be that the default printer for your computer is set to a PDF driver rather than a regular printer. And if the PDF driver has been uninstalled, that may cause a problem for the PAF preview function. As inconvenient as it is, PAF needs a good connected printer before it will preview a printout. Go to Start, Control Panel, Printers and Faxes. See which printer has the check mark by it. That is your default printer. It that is not a regular printer, find one that is currently connected to your computer and right click on it and choose "Set as Default Printer". Your preview should then work ok. 2. This is one place where the inexpensive PAF Insight program could probably clear the errors for you. It is far superior to the PAF program in many ways, especially in finding and fixing problems in the program. I think you can download it from the Internet, so that you do not have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. John Ohana -- the owner of the company is on the PAF list and can give you more information. It is also far superior in match/merge functions and is very easy to use. If interested you can look at the program here: http://www.ohanasoftware.com/ I think it is still about $20.00. I am not connected in any way to the company or their programs...just a happy user. I didn't think PAF supported all those in the NOTES, just in the Sources. OTOH, I haven't actually wanted to use them. Bold, underline and/or italic are nice touches, but you need to be careful. Ditto using various fonts. If you get too many, it looks (a) busy and (b) as if you can't decide which you want. Even if (as in my case) (b) is the truth, you don't necessarily want everyone to _know_ that. (g) Cheryl

    2. Richard Halliday
    3. Joy; Once, in a conversation with someone in PAF Development, I commented about the lack of tabs and typeface variations (e.g., Bold, Italic). The response was that when they were developing PAF 4 they ran out of money before they were able to write the software for all of those features in the Notes. My hope is that they will appear in the next version of PAF, if there is to be one. Furthermore, I find that I want those features in the Actual Text part of Source Citations much more than I need them in the Notes. It has been a long time since PAF 5 was released. I have heard absolutely nothing about a new version. What I have heard is that the software resources of the Church are fully occupied in developing what is to be beta tested soon. I do not know the name of this system, but I have heard a vague reference to the Unified System. Richard L. Halliday If the Lord expected a perfect job He would not let me help. Even so , that does not excuse me From doing my very best. 2. It's also possible that the new HP m7067c actually does have problems - either hardware malfunction or software bugs. The problem could have been caused by either the original HP assembly or something (hardware or a software program) installed by the retail seller. If it's still under warranty, make the seller prove it works correctly before returning it. If the seller can't or won't make that demonstration, then return it and get a different computer from a different seller. Rod
