    3. In addition to Alan's excellent advice, it is important to determine WHY you have those duplicates so the problem does not return. There are two main reasons. Either you entered the same information twice, or you have imported GEDCOM files from someone/somewhere else or downloaded from the Internet. If you recently imported a GEDCOM, you might be able to restore a backup file created before the import and thereby wipe out all the duplicates brought in that way. 1. Duplicate Individuals
    2. In the Indivual list I have discovered many duplicates with two different RIN numbers. 1. Identical information, but with two RIN numbers. 2.Identical information except one RIN with S -Spouse, and a different RIN with P-Parent. 1. Should I eliminate the 2nd identical information with the higher RIN number? 2. Should I eliminate anything in this instance? I don't know how this happened, unless the info was added at different times and a RIN number was given each time. Also, there was at least one instance when I went back to check on something, and whole sections were missing. I might have forgotten to save one individual, but not a whole section. What should I do to keep this from happening? Thanks for any help you can give me. (also need help in removing the underline :) Marilyn

    3. Hello, all PAF experts!! I have tried to produce a family group sheet (it happened, when I first started using this program) but all I get, now, is that really weird-looking '.rtf' version, even when I print it off. I have no way to use the 'so strange' .rtf version, on several sheets of paper, when all I want is one sheet, or at the most, two. Please, kindly advise this old fat dummy!! 3. PAF & Service Pack 2 Our group has some problems with Windows XP SP2 and PAF no longer printing. It turned out the problem was 2 fold and had to do witht he new security settings in SP2 What we found had to be done was to upgrade the printer drivers, and uninstall restart the computer and reinstall PAF. 2. Regina Barry
    3. It depends on the hard copy you re trying to produce - for an individual summary, the marriages should all show up for a book the other marriages should show up, depending on if it is descendany (yes, if there were descendants) or ancestry (no... that's direct line) for a family group sheet, any given fgs is a 'unit union (couple and their children by birth or adoption); but there is a box on the lower center of the screen which if checked,. will list other marriages on the fgs. It won't print all two or three of them at once, but it will display the other spouses on the 'parents' page of the fgs. 1. Re: [PAF-5] sending PAF tree to a non-GEDCOM user-3
    2. Here's more detail on my earlier messages. I went through this with a PAF file and wrote down the following. This will give you a PDF file or a RTF file of your PAF Book Report. (I realize that only a few will be interested in this, but once one gets started trying to figure this all out, it's hard to let go. A learning experience!) -Open PAF file, in Family View, and put earliest ancestor in primary position; be sure his box is highlighted/selected. -Go to --> File --> PrintReports--> Books -->Modified Register (Descendancy). -Choose options, as mentioned in earlier message. -To create a PDF file, do _not_ check box, Print to File. -Hit Preview; report opens on screen. -Pull down Print; Acrobat PDFWriter window opens. -Choose option - All Pages; Hit OK button. -Next window is "Save PDF File AS" -Choose location where you want file saved to; give file a name; save as type PDF file; check to view PDF file; hit Save button. -Report opens on screen; Pull down View and choose Zoom In; repeat until text is large enough to read (or use key command); you can click arrow at bottom of screen to view the next page(s). -When you send the PDF file, the receiver can open it with the free Acrobat Reader and print it out. In PDF format, they may only be able to read or print file, unless there was an option under Preferences that I didn't notice. If they want to get at part of the file, or edit the entire file, they can do a "Select All" and Copy and Paste it into a word processing file. ----------------------------- -To create a RTF file, follow first directions above, but _do_ check box, Print to File. -Hit Preview. -With document open, hit Print button at top of screen. -Next window opens - "Save As" window; choose location where to save; give file a name; choose Save as Type RTF; hit Save. -File gets saved in RTF and opens in your word processor. 1. Re: [PAF-5] sending PAF tree to a non-GEDCOM user
    2. I received a private message and I thought it might be helpful to post my reply here. I've deleted the name. In a message dated 10/11/2005 6:23:51 PM, >Please continue with your suggestion, after "Also". You left out a lot >of steps after "Descendants" as there is no place to select Print. When >I click on Next it doesn't lead anywhere either. You first have to create the html file. It helps to find the html file later, if you save it to the desktop when you create it. Then open it by launching your browser software and then choose "Open" from the File Menu of your browser software. Look in the dialog window until you find the html file you created and then select and open the html file. Then choose "Print" from the File Menu of your browser software. To create an html file, open the PAF file. Choose the family view and put earliest ancestor in the primary position. Pull down Tools and select Create Web Page. Under Type of page, choose Descendants. Then choose the Notes options you prefer and the other options. Then hit the Next button. Give page a name and hit the Finish button. Follow the next screens and the html file will open on your computer screen. It appears you can only print the pages one at a time. I don't see how to tell the program to print the whole html file all at once, but perhaps it is possible. It creates a PDF file which then opens with Adobe Acrobat and you then give another command to print one page (which is just part of the report). >In your 1st paragraph you refer to save in wp format. Wp stands for WordPerfect >and it doesn't work either. No, my use of "wp" is an abbreviation for word processing; I indicated this in parentheses the first time I used "wp". I believe it would be easier in PAF to go to File -> Print Reports -> Books -> Modified Register (Descendancy) and create a report and save as rtf and send it, or open the rtf file in your wp (word processor) and save, if possible, in the word processing format that the relative uses and send, or open in your word processor and save as html and send. Your relative can open an html file with his browser. This particular html file, created with a word processor, will then display the entire report as one page which can then be printed in its entirety with one print command. I tried it and it works, however some of the notes are missing in the Print Preview mode, although they are displayed when the html file is on the screen. I don't know what is causing this to happen. Perhaps the easiest way is to create a report and save as an rtf file and send it, or open the rtf file in your wp (word processor) and save, if possible, in the word processing format that the relative uses and send. Your relative can open an html file with his browser. Also, with your earliest ancestor in the primary position (not sure if this is needed), choose Tools -> Create Web Page -> Descendants. This will create an html file which you can send and your relative can open with his browser. I believe he can also print this out. Valerie Gibbs

And if the PDF driver has been uninstalled, that may cause a problem for the PAF preview function. As inconvenient as it is, PAF needs a good connected printer before it will preview a printout. Go to Start, Control Panel, Printers and Faxes. See which printer has the check mark by it. That is your default printer. It that is not a regular printer, find one that is currently connected to your computer and right click on it and choose "Set as Default Printer". Your preview should then work ok. 3. Richard Was intrigued when you said you could install PAF on a flash drive. I just got off the phone with the President of our genealogy group and we were beating back and forth whether we could install PAF on a CD together with a database. Idea was to use PAF as a database to record cemetery, church and similar records and distribute on a CD with a standalone PAF program installed. This would mean the recipient would not have to have any genealogy program of their own. I would appreciate any comments. Doug Little Florida --------------------------------- Yahoo!
