in order to change the sex the individual must not be linked in a marriage. you will have to delete all marriages for an individual and then change the sex and then you can add the marriage back. I saw a message someplace (not sure if it was on-line or in a newspaper) that the new updates tend to cause problems if you have changed the default settings on your computer. Supposedly if you go back to the defaults the problems stop. I have yet to get a successful download of the updates so I don't know how they will work (also not sure if Microsoft is still trying to send them or waiting for a fix). I have Windows 2000, not XP. Elaine Oakes >>I recently downloaded a set of 8 Security updates for Windows XP After I downloaded and installed these updates, my desktop computer went completely nuts. Nothing worked right and some things didn't work at all. It messed up PAF5 completely.
Just a note, non-LDS can also use it to search the IGI they just don't see the temple ordinances. -----Original Message----- From: Richard Rands [mailto:rrands@cfmc.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 19, 2005 12:42 PM To: PAF-5-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PAF-5] PAF Insight PAF Insight does not generate any printed reports. What is it that you don't like about PAF's books? What are you looking for that would make them "better"? If we have that information, maybe we can steer you toward other options. Joan Lowrey At 11:59 AM 10/19/05 -0700, LaVerne wrote: >Does PAF Insight make a better book than PAF? > >LaVerne

I just did the same set of updates, (10/12). No problems. I would make sure there is a fresh restore point, then selectively choose the updates and install, one at a time, checking PAF after each one. There is at least one of these that requires a system restart. I think they are all Windows Security updates so you need all of them if you can make them work. Gary Templeman One difference between the PAF merge function and PAF Insight is that when you merge an individual (say a married man) with his duplicate and the duplicate also has a wife, then you end up with only one of the man, but the wife (and the marriage) is duplicated and now you have to merge her name also and get rid of one of the marriages. PAF Insight accomplishes all of these merges as one action. I have found that Insight helps me to avoid messing up my database by trying to fix it. Alan
There should be no problem with merging 2 RINs, one that includes the spouse and the other that includes parents. My experience is that merging them results in the merged info including both links. I recently downloaded a set of 8 Security updates for Windows XP that included: Cumulative Security Update KB896668 Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830 and Security Update #s KB900725; KB901017; 902400; 904706; 905414; and 905749. After I downloaded and installed these updates, my desktop computer went completely nuts. Nothing worked right and some things didn't work at all. It messed up PAF5 completely. I had to go to the Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and restore the system to the way it was the day before I installed these updates before the computer worked properly again. I don't know what the problem was, but I have not installed them again. So I'm cautious of these and future updates. Have any of you experienced the same problem and can anyone explain what may have happened with this installation? Any help would be appreciated. Marilyn Another possible solution is to Merge the identical entries using the MERGE command in PAF. I use this method whenever I import any gedcom info and find it to be very effective. Gary, Bill and Allen, thanks for the help. I have not imported a GEDCOM. but probably have entered information twice. I will look into the PAF Insight also. Thanks again, Marilyn
Generally you should just merge them. You have to different records with the same info and that is all the RINs mean. You might want to check folks related to the RINs first and also do a backup in case something goes wrong (use the Backup on the FILE menu). If you have read this list for very long, you would have seen previous discussions about RINs. They are a convenience, but are really just used by the program go control the number it needs for records. You have no control over the RINs and they should not be used in an archive sense, just for the convience the the manner you are using them to know different records with the same info. As long as it looks like combining them would not be a problem due to links to others, then I would just merge them. There's a checkbox on the lower right of the Report printing which has 'Print to File'. This convinces PAF to print to an rtf file. Uncehck it and see if that helps.
