Gary -- Again, thanks for caring enough to respond. Problem solved! It WAS a PAF problem, but not really . . . I mean it was caused by something I did in PAF but it was not a problem with their program. What I had done was changed background color of highlighted name to be WHITE and since it was white anyhow, when I clicked on it with my mouse, it wouldn't change anything. I think I may have pointed out (maybe not) that it seemed to be functioning alright, but simply not "behaving" as I thought it should . . . or as it had earlier. Anyhow, once I figured out what I'd done . . . it seems to be OK now. What started off this whole mess was everything seemed terribly bright on my screen and I've been having a lot of trouble with irritated eyes of late, so thought I could tone things down a bit by changing my PAF background colors. That's what got me into trouble. Your answers always seem so helpful and well thought out. Thanks for the good work you are doing and, especially, for responding on my behalf. It is still not certain it is a PAF problem. Computers are complex beasts and there can be some weird interactions. I once had a problem with Internet Explorer locking up if I clicked the wrong place before the page fully loaded. No other programs were affected and no amount of fiddling with IE made a difference. Problem solved when I updated the mouse driver. The moral of the story is that even though the behavior seems to have been triggered by the PAF change, the actual flaw may not be in PAF, particularly if resetting PAF back to the defaults didn't make a difference. We recently had "Microsoft Tuesday", the day they generally release their patches. It is not uncommon for one of their patches to cause some other problem to show up. Since you have rebooted, and I assume you have changed the background color back, I would next try uninstalling and reinstalling PAF. You will not lose your data, but make new backups first just in case. If that fails, then I would make sure all your hardware drivers, especially the mouse, are current (check the cable connection too). Gary (and others) - First, thanks for responding. I have just shut down the computer and rebooted. The problem still exists. I generally work with 4 or 5 applications open at once (WORD, Acrobat, Xcel, PAF, and my e-mail provider, AOL). I have genealogy documents in all these other applications that I use constantly while working on my genealogy. Has worked fine for several years until this color-background change this a.m. The problem seems certain to be a PAF problem -- or created thereby -- since I can use the cursor in all other applications just as I did before. No problem there! It is only as I previously described (in PAF). If you have any other ideas, let me know. Fred In a message dated 10/17/2007 9:32:43 A.M. On 2nd thought, I think you had the Pedigree screen open; so I tried to duplicate the problem, without any luck. Have you shut down the computer and restarted? I have had occasional mouse glitches in other programs (usually MS Word) that have always been fixed with a reboot. Lila, 1) On my labtop I do not have to use the Fn key at all. When the num lock key is on. I just have to hold the alt key and then type the three number keys. alt key 132 = ä alt key 129 = ü and so on. (Hmmm, hope the umlauts come out in the message) 2)To my knowledge, toggling the num key is only required on laptops when there are several keys that are double used. On my German keyboard it is not just the numeric pad keys that are double used. When I forget to turn the num key off, it is annoying when I hit one of the keys that are double used, and I sometimes have say a nasty word or two before I realize that the num lock is on. On a standard keyboard, hmmmmm, I seem to remember in the distant past that there was some problem caused by the num luck key, but I can no longer remember exactly what it was, seems it was cured when the bios programmers allowed us to adjust the condition of the num lock at boot time. But I think you are OK now on the standard keyboard. Dave [email protected] wrote: > 1. I found that the number lock on my laptop toggles only while I'm holding down the function and ALT keys. Apparently it has no effect otherwise. Betty A
1. When I wrote about using the Fn key plus the letter keys coded with the same color numbers, I forgot to say that in addition to the Fn key, you have to hold down the Alt key. I think Betty found that, but just thought I'd mention it. 2. Dave, when you mention that you have to toggle the Num Lock key, is this only when you are using a laptop without a numeric keypad? My Dell laptop has some blue numbers on some of the letter keys, in addition to the letters. These take the place of a keypad, by holding the function (I think--the one with the same color code) key down at the same time the number is depressed. I'm not at home and am struggling with my grandson's Mac today. Betty, Try using the Windows Character Map, accessed by Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Character Map (at least on my WindowsXP) If you find it useful, you can right-click on it and select Send to Desktop (Create shortcut). Then you can launch it from the shortcut any time you want to use it. Thank you all for your comments. I finally solved it by temporarily adding my name as a spouse, and putting the correct place where I wanted it. Then I could just click it on in the other places. It took awhile for PAF Insight to correct their list. If you are number challenged like me you may want to put the free German Assistant applet on your screen. I use it for writing letters, documents, etc. that have nothing to do with PAF. Thanks again, LaVerne
Maybe global search and replace would do it. Copy and Paste it into the replace part of the form, from somewhere that it's correct. If that doesn't work, instead of using F7, try using the keypad codes. I think the code for the ess-tset is Alt +0233, but it may be 0223. One of them is the ess-tset an the other is e with an acute mark. I'm not home and am using my son's mac--and I'm struggling. :-( Lila > > From: "Bill Buchanan" <[email protected]> > Date: 2007/10/12 Fri PM 02:22:31 CDT > To: <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [PAF-5] Eszett won't show > > LaVerne, > > It seems peculiar that it works in some cases but not this one. Maybe global search and replace would do it. Copy and Paste it into the replace part of the form, from somewhere that it's correct. LaVerne, It seems peculiar that it works in some cases but not this one. I would run Check/Repair and try again.
