    3. Bruce, I can help you with the first part. You can create a custom report and select the people unrelated to the home person. Set the Relationship Filter to All and click Select, then change the Relationship Filter to All Related, and click Deselect. The only people left selected will be those who are unrelated to the home person. I am not sure how to export the full notes, unless you export the selected people to a gedcom file and then edit that in your word processor. I suppose you could also generate webpages for the selected people, and copy the notes from there. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Unable to write to my PAF program
    2. Just curious if the file you are trying to work with has ever been used on a different computer. On Friday I had to help one of our FHC staff members who had saved a file at the FHC but then could not use it at home. It turned out that we needed to go on a computer with Admin privileges and change the security settings of her portable hard drive to allow everyone full access. Sometimes you can fix a problem like that by emailing the file to yourself. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Unable to write to my PAF program
    2. Gary Templeman
    3. It could be set as read-only, but the file I had to fix on Friday did NOT have a check in that box and we were getting the exact same error message. I had to be logged on as administrator, then right click and select properties, then security and add "everyone" as a user with access to the file and then give full control. What apparently happened is that the portable HD would not work on the FHC computer until it got installed, and the patron user login did not have sufficient privileges to install the hardware. After going to the admin login the HD worked (that is only a one-time process), but the file was saved to the drive while still on as Administrator. Administrator apparently took ownership. When she took the drive home it would not work on her computer. When she returned, testing of the file at the FHC showed it would run when I was logged on as Administrator, but not as Patron. It was only after going back to the Admin login and changing the security settings that it would run under any login. The security tab needed to access those parameters is available in XP Pro (and Windows 2000 Pro) but not XP Home. I must admit it was puzzling to have a read-error when the read-only flag was not set, and that was a new one for me. George, if the read-only attribute is not set but it still errors out, email me the file and I will try to fix it and send it back. 3. George, The file attribute has probably been set to Read-Only (maybe by being saved on a CD). To remove the Read-Only attribute, save the file to the hard disk (perhaps to the Desktop or MyDocuments). Click the right-hand mouse button on the file's icon, and from the pop-up menu select Properties. On the General tab, check whether there is a checkmark beside Read-Only. If so, click on it to remove the checkmark, and click OK. The file should now be readable and writeable. 2. I would enter "Born at sea off the coast of Connecticut, USA". I have a case where twins born on Huron Island in the Mississippi River near Keithsburg, Mercer County, Illinois. In this case I have a county because evidently Huron Island belonged to Mercer County. Lots of men born at sea were named Seaborne. It becomes confusing as sons and nephews were named after them, because the namesakes were not born at sea. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Import Error
    2. OK, so how do I figure out what the lines are and whether a fix is needed? This was being done as a test, where I took a PAF5 database and opened and converted it in Legacy. Some minor editing of a few names was done, and some sources combined. Then I did a GEDCOM export from the Legacy, specifying the PAF 5 format. A new PAF file was created and the GEDCOM imported into it. Since the original data came *from* PAF5, I did not expect thousands of these errors. 2. Richard Rands
    3. Hi Gary. There should be a record number for each error in the GEDCOM list file. If you have thousands of them, it sounds to me as though Legacy generated some garbage when it converted the original PAF file. Then when you created the GEDCOM file in Legacy, the export routine was confused and added the continuation records. I figure out the problem, I would open the GEDCOM in a text processor (not a word processor) such as Wordpad, and find the first errant continuation record. Then look at the line or lines immediately above it. The content of those lines will tell you where the problem exists. It is my guess that the fix needs to be made in Legacy. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Import Error
    2. John Vilburn
    3. It sounds like the GEDCOM you are importing has been incorrectly modified by someone. Each GEDCOM line begins with a level number and a tag. In your example the level is 2 and the tag is CONT. You can open the GEDCOM in wordpad to see how it is put together. There are two types of continuation tags, CONT and CONC. The CONC tag indicates concatenation, which means that this is a continuation right in the middle of a line, not at the end. The CONT tag indicates a continuation where the previous line has ended. So the following: 1 NOTE This is the fir 2 CONC st line of a note. 2 CONT This is the secon 2 CONC d line of a note. Would be translated as: This is the first line of a note. This is the second line of a note. Most often the CONC and CONT tags are found in notes, but they are found in other places too, such as the comments on a citation. You can open the GEDCOM in wordpad and look for a line that starts with "2 CONT" and has a line right before it that starts with "3 CONT" or "3 CONC" or some level other than 2. But be aware that the first tag of a note will always be one level lower than the CONC or CONT tags. 3. For many years I have used Ctrl n in the following fashion, to create Notes for a specific record and relating to a specific heading. While in the Edit Individual window for a record, hold down the Alt key and select "n" to open another window, "Select Notes". In this window one has the ability of adding (or editing) a note relating to one or the other of the headings listed, Biography, Birth, Christening, Death, Burial or Marriage for that record. When you click on either heading it will open a window to be able to input the data for that specific heading. One will not see the heading but it will be included, along with the note, when printing a Chart or Report. Recently at one of our UserGroup meetings a few persons indicated they do not see those headings when they use Alt n. I suspect that the reason is caused by a necessary change to the Preferences, but can't find out what causes the differences on my computer vs those of the other persons. Any suggestions????? 3. The default is to NOT see the notes selector that you are talking about. You have changed the setting from the default. That's why others don't see it. That behavior is altered by the following setting: 1) Pick 'tools' from the menu. 2) Pick 'preferences' from the menu. 3) Should default to the 'General' tab. 4) On the right there is a group box that says 'Display Notes Selector'. 5) Check the 'From edit individual'. Now you will see the notes selection box you are talking about. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ross G.H.
