"I just discovered a great way to backup and share files. Go to www.foldershare.com. A good way to backup is to have a copy on another computer, preferably at a different location. This program allows you to do that automatically with anyone you want. This company used to charge for their program, but since Microsoft bought them out in early November, it is now free. It wouldn't surprise me to see this as a standard feature of a future version of Windows. The marvellous thing about this program is that it automatically updates the copy on the remote computer whenever you change it on your computer. Get this free program and load it on your computer and then send an invitation to your relative. They will always have an up to date copy of your paf file. You can allow them either read-only permission or editing permission. If you allow editing then their changes will automatically show on your copy. I just tried this with my wife and I opening and editing the same file at the same time. I edited the file and then she opened PAF. She saw my change. While I still had PAF open, she made a change. It gave me a warning that the file was changed. All I had to do was exit from PAF and it updated with her changes. All data transfers are encrypted, so this is secure. And you control who gets access and what type of access they have. If you have more than 1 computer in your home, you can also keep a copy of your file on that computer." I have meant to have a look at this system, but have not got around to it yet. If you use this, can you post to the list your impressions please? 2. When you upload to Rootsweb you can upload everything and choose not to display the living. I keep preaching this!!! :-) You can also create GedCom files and send them to yourself at a Web-based E-mail address that provides a lot of storage. Many of them require maintenance on your part, such as loading/reading your E-mail with various frequencies, but if you pay Hotmail $19.95 a year you get a lot of storage and don't have to schedule anything in case you're away from the computer for a long time. 2. George Gildersleeve
    3. Hello to PAF users group, Sorry I haven't responded to the list and those who have offered help and concern about my inability to write to my PAF genealogy family program. There were several suggestions that sounded as though they should work none did - I was never able to write to my PAF program which went on the back burner. I store most of my PAF backups and other programs on a second internal harddrive for protection from spyware and viruses invading the C drive. I do have three other external hard drives which each serve a purpose and each is used for PAF backups to enhance protection. However my last backup was made only to the F drive - second internal drive. Bad stuff happened as I noticed a grinding popping noice coming from the computer. I took it in and found that the mechanical part of the F drive had malfunctioned and it had become unreadable. The computer repair people I use attempted to save anything salvagable to a new 2nd harddrive I purchased from them but none of the backups survived. I also lost thousands of photos but have duplicates for everything. To shorten a long story one of my backups to another driving had a couple hundred individuals less than the lost PAF programs so though a little miffed things could be worse. I really outfoxed myself and from now on am going to backup regularly to ALL internat and external hard drives. I do have my PAF information on RootsWeb but not information on the living to protect them. I would like to find an outside source where I can safely have a backup available. Thank you all again and it's nice to be up and running once more - after fits and starts I am now 100 percent and am typing with my fingers crossed. Sincerely, George Gildersleeve Salem on the west side

    3. JM, The easy way is to create a gedcom file selecting only the families and data options you want. It is as simple as exporting Partial, and then making your selections. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Where are NOTE TAGS stored?
    2. Ross G.H. Cotton
    3. WA Davis I would like to discuss this subject further with you since I am unable to find the registry that you describe for PAF 5. You say: "The generic tags are stored in the registry at "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LDS Church\FamilySearch\Personal Ancestral File 5\Note Tags". " Am I to understand the the various Tag designations, ie. (MARRIAGE: or TO-DO:), or any other tag that I decide to add in the "Select Notes" window, I use on my PAF5 program are stored in that location? 1) Does that include that actual verbiage that I insert as a Note, or just the designation? 2) In your suggestion you don't identify if there is a necessity to select a Drive. Am I to assume that after I select My Computer, that I then select Drive C? If that is correct, I can't find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" Also I can't find the rest of the words in the string. I do know that in my case the various files for my PAF5 program are stored in Drive C\Program Files\FamilySearch\Paf5. None of the program files shown at this location are designated "Note Tags". In addition I have elected to separate my data from the program files so have created a separate file for the PAF5-data in Drive D, so that I won't lose the data, in case of a computer crash. I would be interested in your response, either on the list or separately. 2. Alan Whitcomb
    3. The size of your file is 7,727,456 bytes.. or 7.7 megabytes. The Free disk space is the amount of disk space .. on probably your hard disk.. which is not being used, which is 1,000,474 megabytes or slightly more than one gigabyte. I could go into what a byte is but won't you could put your data on a 3 and a half inch floppy disk which has a capacity of 1.44 megabytes. You may think these are just numbers, but when I was a youngster.. my first floppy drive had a capacity of 100,000 bytes! Just know what the file size is.. and what the FREE SPACE is.. the empty space remaining on your disc. You can think of a byte like the storage enough for a single character. Hope this old (computer) dinasaur was able to help! 1. Re: [PAF-5] Where are NOTE TAGS stored?
    2. Here is the information I think you want. Be sure to read the second paragraph as messing with the registry is not recommended and is not needed for your request. For those added to an individual, I think they are stored in the PAF file. However the generic tags are stored in the registry at "My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LDS Church\FamilySearch\Personal Ancestral File 5\Note Tags". Just as a trial I added the tag "JOB:" to the list and it worked fine. I do not know if there is a limit to the number However, you can do the same addition by going to the Selector Screen and just adding the tags there (the Add button). That should convert any tags you have with that name to a regular tag automatically. If you do not add the tag, but type it in under the ALL, it will show up as a tag but be in a light gray color on the tag selector and not show up on other folks tag selector lists. The reason your custom tags are gone is that they were stored in the registry that you lost. If you have an individual with most of those tags, simply go in and Add those tags as regular tags. Be sure to backup first in case anything goes haywire. > I had maybe 20 to 30 note tags that I frequently used. Where were my custom note tags stored and why isn't PAF using them? Any ideas? Can I get them back? Sandy

    1. Re: [PAF-5] Where are NOTE TAGS stored?
    2. Gaylon Findlay
    3. Sandy: When we gave the Ancestral Quest code to the Church, which was used to create the PAF program, the note tags were stored in the ".ini" file. They are not stored in your database. When using notes, if the Notes Selector window comes up, you can "Add" tags to the list on that window. Once you have added these tags back into that list, they will show up the way you are used to. 3. Another option is to use a program such a GENViewer (www.mudcreeksoftware.com) which reads GEDCOMs, PAF 3-5 files, TMG 4, 5, 6 (The Master Genealogist) files, Family Tree Maker files, Legacy 3-6 files and RootsMagic files. It will show what they term "islands", which are the people or family groups not connected to the main line. Those clusters can be individualy exported to GEDCOM. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Unable to write to my PAF program
    2. You can check the preferences under TOOLS>Preferences>Folders to see the default location. I think it is the program directory (actually a pretty poor choice). I always create the following folders: Data, Bak, Reports, and Web. I also create a pictures folder. Then I use those for every thing and leave the program folder alone. I used to remember folks that put everything in the root directory. There file organization was basically none. It would be like putting all of your research in a file drawer with no folders, simply everything stacked in place. Use the folders to your advantage and don't waste time searching around places for where you left things (no maybe I will practice what I preach a bit better!). After checking the default you should be able to find most *.paf files. The search will also do the job. Bill > Gary is right. 3. George, If you open your Family Search folder, then PAF then click on Data locate and highlight the file name you are having problems with ie 'JONES' then right click on that file, go down to Properties then uncheck the Read Only box, you will find that will work. Regards Barbara [email protected] wrote: > George, > > I think you are confusing what file you need to fix. It sounds from the description below that you are trying to change the read-only setting on the PAF program folder. It is supposed to be read-only, as you should not be able to directly modify the program files themselves. You need to be looking at your data file (something like "gildersleeve.paf"). The default location for that is probably in your My Documents folder. Reinstalling PAF is not going to solve the problem because the issue is almost certainly with your data file, and is a Windows problem not a PAF problem. > > If you cannot locate your data file you may need to find somebody who can get to your computer and do a hands-on fix. 3. George, Gary is right. In PAF5 there is no folder called Data in either the FamilySearch folder or the PAF5 folder. PAF5 data files will probably be found in MyDocuments, but can be found by using Start menu | Search | .paf Once I have found the file using Search, I would select it (but NOT open it .i.e click once, not twice), then from the Windows File menu, select "Open containing folder". Then right-click on the file's icon to bring up the pop-up menu where you can select Properties. From the Properties General tab, remove any checkmark beside Read-Only, and click OK. If it isn't a Windows access-level problem, the problem should be solved. A different but easy solution is to open the file in PAF and export All to a gedcom file. Create a new (empty) PAF file with a unique name (i.e. any name not already used by a PAF file on your computer), and import the gedcom. This might take you 5 minutes. Let us know how you solved the problem. 1. Re: [PAF-5] Unable to write to my PAF program
    2. George, I think you are confusing what file you need to fix. If you can locate the data file but are unable to change it, my offer still stands for you to email it to me and I will fix it. 3. As far as I know, a Data folder does not automatically get created in a standard installation of PAF 5. I believe there may be one in PAF3 but I am not at a computer where I can check.
