The simplest way is to make a backup and simply chose the memory stick as the location for the backup. Bill > Hi, I was wondering how you down load your paf onto a flash drive. Thanks > Becky
Becky, Gary asks a key question, If you want to run PAF itself from a flashdrive, you can copy the PAF5 folder from the Familysearch folder in your Program Files folder. Then copy the datafiles to the flashdrive too. There is a gedcom of this file available on the net somewhere... I downloaded a trial version and am still evaluating its use as compared to the free PAF (I'm a tightwad at heart so if I can do everything in a the free PAF I will do so). I also downloaded the Adam.aqz.zip file and feel that this is something that I could add to my PAF database; but alas, as I have not purchased the AQ software, I cannot generate a gedcom of this file. As such, I was wondering if there might be some kind soul out there who has AQ that would be willing to generate a gedcom of this file and e-mail it to me so that I can import it into my PAF database? i thought the same thing myself. but then i found that AQ will convert an AQ database into PAF, and Bob's your uncle. its then ready to merge into PAF using PAFWiz or PAF Insight or you can use PAF to generate a GEDcom to load back into your PAF file. Thanks, Bill. I knew there was some place where I wanted marriage notes to appear and they did not--it must not have been an FGS. I didn't have many marriage notes, and they are taken care of. I had to have "all" in the relationship filter to make your directions work. Filtering is beyond my poor old brain, so thanks a bunch. I guess this problem got fixed in an update, and I didn't catch on. The test note I just wrote does now print, but there was a time when PAF didn't print marriage notes on an FGS and I was disappointed but didn't have time to look for my marriage notes. So I don't need to do anything. Thanks for the heads up. I am not sure what you are doing. I just looked at a Family Group Sheet and the Marriage notes were cleared denoted. There were also notes for Husband and Wife. It may be that you have the notes as end notes and are just not finding them. I only saw a choice to put the notes on the first page, but I think I remember somewhere that they could be end notes also. Maybe that is the issue. Try adding a note to your marriage (maybe just the word TEST NOTE) and see if it shows up. All you need to do is a preview to check. Lila, To select all people with marriage notes, you can follow these steps: Search menu Advanced Focus/Filter Define (Click Advanced if Define is not shown) Marriage Notes Exists OK OK Show results only Now the list displayed will be limited to people with marriage notes. Double clicking a name will take you to that person. Using Ctrl+F or the binoculars icon will return you to the list of people with marriage notes. To return the list to it's normal state, remove the checkmark from Show results only. I hope this helps. Bill Davis is correct in saying that marriage notes can be shown on FGRs, but they cannot be shown on some reports and charts. When PAF was new (version 2.something) I typed in some marriage notes. Long afterward, I realized that marriage notes do not appear on Family Group Sheets. I guess they print somewhere but not in a format that I use regularly. After I figured that out, I put marriage notes in the husband's notes, problem solved. Except... Is there a way to create a custom list of marriages that contain notes? I'd like to get those early marriage notes into the husband's notes, but don't know how to find them again. If the answer is to use the filter, I need baby steps. Lila

Donna, The address is new.familysearch.org (no www.) The website is still in development, although the term "beta" is no longer used. So far, to register you have to be a member in one of the temple districts that have made the change-over. Or you can be a FHC director (or assistant director) and have access to register. Family History Consultants and leaders in the TDs that are in the 90-day roll-out period can register for nFS if they have registered at consultant.familysearch.org at least 3 business days previously. (In actual practice, the delay is about a week.) It is expected that all LDS will have access to nFS by the end of 2008, and that the general public will have access by the end of 2009. This is probably more information than you asked for, but I didn't want to give the impression that nFS is currently available to everyone who goes to the website. The engineers have scheduled some more improvements before making it available to everyone. Also, by phasing it in over a period of time, it keeps the technical support work-load more manageable. In the meantime, the present FamilySearch.org website continues to offer its usual services, and Record Search at http://www.familysearchlabs.org/ gives access to some of the recently indexed databases. And http://www.familysearchindexing.org provides opportunities to everyone who wants to help with indexing the 2 million+ microfilms in the Granite Mountain vaults. Glad it worked for you! It's sometimes difficult to explain simple things, though. (g) Cheryl [email protected] wrote: > Thanks Cheryl. Just explored nFS a little, and am very pleased that the search engine will find people with multiple given names, under any of those names. I found Mathilde Helling before because I knew her first name, but if she had gone by her middle name, Marie, I would also have found her at nFS.
Thanks Cheryl. I had to fool with it a bit to see how you meant to do it, but it works beautifully. When I interpreted the red line below as "color the text," it made the eyeballing easy. Open either database, create a CUSTOM report with RIN, Surname, givenname, birthdate; print to file as (database1). Close file Open 2nd database: create a CUSTOM report with RIN, Surname, givenname, birthdate; print to file as (database2). Close file. Open WINDOWS EXPLORER (file manager) -- find the two new files. are they _exactly_ the same size (+/-2 or fewer bytes)? Yes = no differences. No = differences. Open database1.rtf in any word-processing program (WordPad, WORD, WP, whatever). Cursor to bottom. INSERT database2.rtf. SAVE-AS COMBO.rtf. Highlight ALL of database2.rtf. SAVE. Under TABLE, select SORT TEXT, by Paragraph, Text. Now eyeball it -- Names that are in both databases will form a color-white-color-white pattern. Changes in the pattern will indicate something in one that isn't in the other. I grant it is probably easier and faster to buy one of the recommended programs, but it is POSSIBLE to do it without spending money. FWIW Cheryl -- There should be no attachments on this message, unless I specifically mentioned them above.
